Elizabeth Jean Lutton Imig Obit

IMIG, Elizabeth ELIZABETH JEAN LUTTON IMIG Elizabeth Jean Lutton Imig, Betty, 81, of Atlanta passed away Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, of cancer. She was born October 4, 1927 in Evanston, IL, attended Evanston High School and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in music education. Betty married Walter Joseph Imig, Jr. on June 18, 1949. Over the years they lived in Des Plains, IL, Tampa, FL, Barrington, IL and settled in Atlanta in 1969. During her life, she worked as a substitute teacher in several states and in the Peachtree High School library from 1976-1983. Betty joined Dunwoody United Methodist church in 1973 and remained a faithful member until she passed away. A lover of music and choral performance, Betty volunteered countless hours in the music library at DUMC. An original member of the DUMC women's choir, she was also a proud member of the chancel choir and sang in cathedrals throughout the world including England, Spain and Italy. Apart from international performances, she also sang with the choir at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration at Ebenezer Baptist church. Betty was especially proud of the fact that her godfather was Peter Christian Lutkin, composer of "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" which will be part of her Memorial service. During the 1970's she sang with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus under the direction of Robert Shaw and was also a part of the ASO Chamber Chorus. Some of the highlights during her years with the ASO included singing at Carnegie Hall in 1976 and at Jimmy Carter's Inauguration in 1977. Upon her retirement from ASO, Mr. Shaw called her personally to say there would always be a place for her in the event that she decided to come back. On top of her many musical accomplishments, she was active in several other circles over the years. Betty was a member and participant of Delta Zeta sorority for over fifty years and also a member of Delta Omicron. She participated in several Bible studies at her church and knitted numerous lap pads for cancer patients. Aside from church, music and philanthropic activities, Betty was most happy gardening, listening to opera, reading, and playing games with her family. Betty loved traveling, especially visiting downtown Chicago and always loved lunch at the Walnut Room at Marshall Fields. Always the entertainer, she also did a very good Eleanor Rigby pantomime that her children enjoyed. Betty is survived by her husband of 59 1/2 years, Walter, her daughters Dr. Patricia McHenry of Chattanooga, Marilyn Kroll of Rockford, Michigan, Judy Imig-Bush of Marietta, her grandchildren Liz and Matt Kroll, Kate, Jessica and Caroline Bush, and her brother, Bert Lutton, of Deerfield, Illinois. Her memorial service will be held on Sat., January 17th at 11:00 am at DUMC. The family will greet friends and loved ones in the Parlor after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the DUMC Chancel Choir Fund.

Published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on 1/10/2009
Dear Imig Cousins,

I am searching for all descendants of the large IMIG family who came over from Germany in the mid-1800's in several waves of immigration. Most settled first in Tazewell Co., Illinois.

My grandfather George Jacob IMIG was born in Seward Co., Nebraska. His parents, Carl and Anna (Imig) IMIG, moved there from Tazewell Co., Illinois.

Much work has been done on our fascinating IMIG family roots, so we have a lot to share. I am working with other IMIG cousins to pool and update our information, so please contact me if you are a member of our extended family!

Best Wishes,
Alice Imig Stipak

If you are Kurt, the son of Paul and Jeanne. I have some information about your Imig grandfather.
His real name was John Henry Imig, born 2/24/1875 in Germany (probably Cologne). His parents were Jacob and Elizabeth Imig. He immigrated to Nebraska with his widowed mother in 1888 or 1889 and lived with his sister Flora. I believe he changed the spelling of his name from Emigh or Emich. He married twice. 2/10/1907 to Elma Schmidt with whom he had 5 children. Edward,Karl,Elsie, and Henry. Elma died and John married Agnes Katherine Jaworski in
1917. They had 6 children, Marjorie, Elaine,Dorothy (twin died as a newborn), Maxine and Paul. John died in 1936. If you are the right Kurt and would like some pictures and an article about John, please e-mail me directly. Elaine was my mother.
