Hi Cassandra

The Impsons that I researched came to South Africa early 1900s. They were Arthur IMPSON and Eva GAULT. If those names ring a bell then I can give you some South African and England information. I am not researching any American links but I have contacts who may be able to help if you are on the same track as me. My uncle (my father's brother) married an IMPSON.

Thank you for the quick response....this is going to be harder than I thought.
My grandfather was Fredrick Ernest John Impson. Does that help at all. I have only really started looking today, so don't have much info....I am in contact with Sylvia Fletcher in the UK, she is definitely related to us, but she is also looking for other members of our Impson tree, there is definitely family that went to the USA, which we are hoping to find out more about.I have a few articles I still need to read over given to me by my mother...if I get anymore information I will let you know.
Thanks again for your help

Hi, I am from the Impson family in South Africa, I am trying to trace our family....I haven't found much except that we originated in the UK and there has been a lot of reference to the Choctaw nation. I have got a picture of a Choctaw woman who is apparently related to us....Also John seems to be a name that is very common all along our family tree....
I have just started researching so would appreciate any help you can give me regarding how I should go about it.
Thanks Cassandra Garofallou.
P.S.

Richard's father was Richard Hall born about 1755, buried 09 Jan 1812 at St Margaret's church King's Lynn and his mother was Ann Barker. They married at St Nicholas Chapel King's Lynn on 29th May 1785. They were a family of bricklayers and builders. I am related down Richard's brother Robert Hall who married Mary Ann Tomlinson. I think Richard's parents were Richard and Elizabeth Hall but haven't found a baptism yet. Hope this helps.

I've some information about Lincoln Tavern that first Richard and then his wife Susan and then Christopher managed but I can't attach it here as it is a Word file.

Thanks so much for the enlightenment. Yes, it does get confusing when people in different generations have the same names. Try German ancestry where sometimes two children in the same family had the same name because the first one died young. The name "Sager" rings a bell so I must have it somewhere in my material, but I'm at work now and can't look.
Thanks, again. You are always clearing up things for me about the Impsons.

Regarding William IMPSON (1787-1849), NY-OH. He was married two times. His marriage to Melinda Miranda Fortner was his first marriage, in New York, abt 1808. They moved to Ohio, where they raised nine children...Miranda, who as born in NY about 1808, and Melinda, Ann, Elizabeth, Huldah, Elias, Maria H., Benjamin, and Minerva Almeda...the last eight born in Ohio between 1812-1834. Melinda Miranda Fortner IMPSON died before August 1838 in Union County, Ohio. William Impson then married Mary Sager on 13 Aug 1838 in Union County, Ohio. William died in 1849 in that county. William and Melinda Miranda's son Benjamin IMPSON was born 27 Jun 1832 (Union County, Ohio)and died 13 Sep 1908 (in Champaign County, Ohio). He served in Company B, 32nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the 1864-1865 Civil War period. He never lived in Mississippi or Louisiana, he surely was not married to his mother (Melinda Miranda Fortner). He is NOT the same "Benjamin F. Impson" which is posted on many sites as the patriarch of the southern line of the Impson family. That "Benjamin F. Impson" was NOT married to Melinda Miranda Fortner IMPSON. They are two different "Benjamins". My "Benjamin's" father, William IMPSON is my g-g-great grandfather; my Benjamin Impson is my g-g-grandfather. My new username for RootsWeb is tlrsh, but I have previous postings over the years on this same subject matter. I hope this helps to clarify one of the problems which occur when different people have the same given name. For information about the William IMPSON (NY-OH) line contact me at rlcolemanjr@hotmail.com

Sorry I misunderstood your post about the Fortners. Thanks for setting me straight.
Lyman Bailey died 25 Oct 1901 in Neligh, Nebraska and is buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetery there. Lyman & Maria's marriage record apparently has his middle initial as "N" while his obituary has it as "W". Of course I see the errors newspapers make every day.

Further note: I have Maria IMPSON's birth as 17 Dec 1829, Union County, Ohio...not New York. Her father and mother were from New York, but had migrated to Ohio about 1808-1810. To my knowledge, all nine of the children except Miranda (1808), the oldest, were born in Ohio. I have Maria marrying Lyman Bailey on 11 Dec 1848, Union County, Ohio
(Lyman N. Bailey and Maria Impson, marriage license no. 1368 (1848), Marriage Record 2, pg 192, Probate Court, Union County Courthouse, Marysville, Union, Ohio)and the parents of at least five children: William E., Almeda, Laura, L. Devilla, and Alonzo Grant Bailey. All of these children appear to have been born in Iowa. Maria died in Neligh, Antelope, Nebraska on 11 Mar 1903. Lyman appears in the Census of 1900, but not 1910. He apparently died between 1900-1910. If you have any clarifications, I would appreciate them. rlcolemanjr@hotmail.com
Guess you misunderstood my earlier message. William IMPSON was my great-great-great grandfather, and father of Maria IMPSON referred to in your postings. He was married to Melinda Miranda FORTNER, and relocated from New York to Ohio about 1800. His spouse, Melinda Miranda could have been the daughter of Joseph or Lewis FORTNER mentioned in my earlier message, or Thomas FORTNER. Additional research regarding her parents needs to be conducted.

The FORTNERS were from NY, and appear in early censuses there. There is a possibility that she is a daughter of Joseph Fortner, who appears in the 1810 Census in New York State, and in the 1820 Census in Broome County, New York. Or, she may possibly be a daughter of Lewis Fortner, who appears in the 1810 Census in Cayuga County, New York, and in the 1820 Census in Tioga County, New York. Joseph and Lewis are believed to be brothers. There is a Thomas Fortner who may be a third brother, or possibly even the father of Joseph and Lewis Fortner. Additional research is required. Let's share information as we find it.

YOU WROTE:
Arthur married Susie Anne Morehouse (rbt7-qs)
b.19 july 1880 Monterey, Schuyler Co., NY

I am very interested! I believe my mother has a 1950 picture from her mother's photo album that has written on the back
"Art & Susie Impson" plus
"Sarah Morehouse, Uncle Mart's wife."

I am trying to find information on them in a kind of backwards attempt to link to George (Sarah) MOREHOUSE and his brother, William (Eleanor) MOOREHOUSE with the goal of finding out information on them and their parents and ancestors.

Does the name Nellie or surname JOSLIN appear in your research? How about HARVEY or BOWERMAN?
Can you share more on Art & Susie IMPSON?

I believe both families came to Iowa from Canada, but my records show they were married in Grant City, IA in 1866. They had 8 children: John, Willie, Kenneth, Grace, Mabel, George, Stanley and Louie. John was my grandfather. Any help out there?

I believe this Samuel and Martha may be the parents of Mercy (Martha?) Impson born either 1825 or 1829 Tompkins co ,NY.Samuel does appear in Tompkins co in 1840. She married William H. Bacon about 1845 and were living in Painted Post ,NY at the same time as Samuel and Martha were. William and Mercy named one of their sons Samuel as well. In the 1850 Painted Post census page22 Samuel and Martha appear with Samuel age 21, Camila? age 18, Andrew age16, Maudann age13, Mary age9, Rachel age7, Elizabeth age2. Mercy would have been married by then and out of the house. Do you know if a Mercy or Martha was born to this family ? William Bacon was the brother of our G-G-Grandfather.

Ann Impson Moody was the daughter of William Impson and spouse, born in Union County, Ohio. One of the other children was Maria, who married Lyman Bailey. Maria was also born in Union County, Ohio, near Milford Center. William Impson, for your information, served in the militia during the War of 1812. His son, Benjamin Impson, served with the Co B, 32nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War, between Feb 1864 and July 1865.

William Impson was the son of another Benjamin Impson, born in New York, who served in four patriot units during the American Revolutionary War. This latter Benjamin died in Orange County, NY, circa 1840.

William's great-grandson, Victor Impson, served with distinction in both World War I and World War II. Victor's grandson, Gerald, served and was killed during the Viet Nam War.

I am another of William Impson's great-great-great grandsons, and served in the US Army during Grenada, Panama, and the Gulf War.
My great grandfather was Caleb Impson who married Choctaw Indian Malina Folsom. They lived in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). The family moved over the Trail of Tears from Mississippi to Indian Territory in 1830. Isaac Impson and Nancy may have been Caleb's parents. I haven't been able to trace my Impsons beyond that point.

What about Maria's sister Minerva Almeda, born 15 Feb 1834 and died
27 Nov 1927 in Neligh NE, buried at Ewing NE? She married William Henry Soesbe 27 May 1852 in Pioneer Grove, Cedar County, Iowa.

Have you ever found any information about the Fortners?

Linda Risinger
