Lotus Ingalls' Trip in 1870

Lotus Ingalls (b. 1818) is the son of James (b. 1795) who is the son of Solomon (b. 1750). These Ingalls relocated to Jefferson County, NY from Packersfield (now Nelson), NH. Lotus wrote 40 letters describing his 1870 trip from Watertown, NY to California, Yosemite & San Francisco. I came across these letters while researching my great-grandfather Jerome Ingalls (b. 1834 & brother of Lotus)who located to California about 1855. In the process of preparing to share these letters with some immediate relatives, I decided to assembled the letters into a book format. The title is "Mr. Ingalls' Journey West - 1870". If any Ingalls are interested, it is now available at the principal on-line book merchants. It is not often that we find writings that bring "alive" an ancestor or relative. We get consumed with names, dates, locations, relationships, etc., and lose some good stories in the process.

I do not have the info in that form, All I could give would be the ancestry of Roy going back a few generations from his father and mother. Since we had no contact from Roy after 1948 it may be that his son, Robert, died young and left no descendents. That particular Ingalls line goes back to Hancock County in Maine for several generations.

Robert Ingalls was the son of Roy Ingalls. Roy was my paternal grandmother's brother, and grew up in Orland Maine. Their father was Orlando Ingalls, mother Sarah Silsby Ingalls.
Roy Ingalls moved to Calif. and lived in Adalanto. He never returned to Maine, but frequently wrote to my grandmother. He married and had one son, Robert, who was born in the 1930s. Roy lived to be 89 and died ca. 1967.
Am trying to find out if Robert is still alive and if he had any descendants.

Betsey Ingalls m. Joseph Wadleigh, Sutton, N.H., about 1776

I have just discovered my connection to the Ingalls family. A Betsey Ingalls married Joseph Wadleigh/Wadley about 1776, Sutton, New Hampshire. Joseph Wadleigh (1753-1818) was son of Thomas Wadleigh. This Joseph moved to Watertown, New York, around 1800. Wife Betsey was said to make this move with him but she died soon thereafter.
Who is this Betsey Ingalls? One family tree says she was daughter of Nathaniel Ingails and Abigail ---. On another site, I find a Nathaniel Ingalls b. 1727 at Chester, New Hampshire, m. Abigail Huse. They had a daughter Mary Ingalls born about 1760 at Chester. Maybe this Mary and the "Betsey" who married Joseph Wadleigh are the same woman? Does anyone have any information on a Betsey Ingalls who married Joseph Wadleigh around 1776?
Lewis Lepretel Ingalls is listed as No. 1444 in Burleigh's 1903 book on the Ingalls families. Born 20 Jan 1818 [2 Jan 1818 per Burleigh], probably in Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. The date I have for his death is 2 Sep 1874 in Augusta, , Georgia, USA. Burleigh does not list a spouse or children.

I found Joshua listed under Hancock on the 1840 census.
However, if you look at the entire census, you will see that prior to the Hancock listing is the town of Cornwall, VT. This may be a census taker error and the first part the page may actually have been Cornwall people.

Ashel Ingalls was "of Cornwall" at the time of his marriage to Lucinda Conley.

Next week I will go to Cornwall and take a look at the town records to see if there is any sign of Joshua.

Sally Thomas
m. Margery Cass
d. Ellisburg, NY 1829

Many trees show this relationship but, none I've found to-date are sourced. Burleigh stops at Benjamin. I am a direct descendant of Samuel and am willing to share the line.

Can anyone point me to documentation that proves above relationship?

Thanks in advance -

Matt

Re: Eve (Ingalls) Alger

Just in case someone out there has not already made the connection after all this time -- Philo and Thankful Wilkinson are in McHenry Co. IL in 1880. Just across the state line is Walworth Co. WI, home of Frank Ingalls. Several sources, including 1880 census, show Philo and Thankful with 5 children: Eva, Addie, Fid(elia), William and Charles. Never any indication Fidelia is not their biological child.

Several posted family trees show Fidelia as dying 1892. WI Deaths, 1820-1907 shows a "Mrs. Frank Ingalls" who died in Rock Co. WI 15 Oct 1892. Is this Fidelia?

William, Charles and Eva all ended up in California. See postings on Wilkinson Board, this site. Also check CA Death Index (1940-1997 this site).

History of McHenry Co. IL (available this site) has bio of Philo Wilkinson. Fidelia is included as one of his children. Also shows Philo and Thankful both buried in California.

No IL Marriage indexed for any variation of Ingalls and Wilkinson. There is a listing for Frank Ingalls and Laura E. Martin 31 Jan 1885 Cook Co., license no. 228972. Is this Fidelia's widower Frank Ingalls? (see http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html)

Eva Ingalls' husband Clarence Wells Alger was born in Chicago in Mar 1887. Alger was his mother's maiden name; her husband had been in MI State Prison, Jackson Co. MI, since 1880, was not released until several years after Wells' birth. All his siblings used the surname Alger after their father's conviction. No way to confirm Wells' biological father. Wells himself was graduate of US Naval Academy 1910 and in 1910 was with Marine Corps in the Philippines.

That's it!
tutubonnie/at/gmail.com
By coincidence, I was just looking further for Susanna's parents in the History of Hampton Falls. A clue may be the name Peter Ingalls, on a list of soldiers who went to Louisburg from H. Falls.
The only child of William and Susannah that I know about is my ancestor Phineas Swain. NH Vital Records, death idex has Phineas "d. Northwood, NH, 21 August, 1840, age 77 years and 10 months, son of William born in Hampton". He is buried in East Northwood Cemetery. Phineas and Jane Carr were married 19 Jan 1784 in Epping, NH (NHVR).
I need to do more research on this family. I believe Wm and Susannah remained in Hampton Falls.
Elizabeth
