I have the book Calhoun is My Kingdom (I hope I have the right title, my mother has the book right now) You're right it has several mentions of different family members. Also the folks at the Calhoun County Historical Society have been a lot of help. I'd like to get back up to Calhoun County after the freeze and check out some of the non-maintained cemeteries. I was advised by the locals that the weeds, poison ivy, snakes and insects would get me if I tried before late October.

I was lucky my great-grandmother lived until I was in my mid-twenties and she loved to tell stories about growing up in the orchards, riding steamboats, and such. Fortunately we got some of them recorded before she passed.

If you are related to the line, I would be happy to share some of my stories and discoveries through email. My address is nancy.genealogy at gmail. (Switch at for @ when emailing)

Thanks for sharing this information. My tree doesn't include Twichell's, except by 2nd marriage of my 3rd Great Grandmother. My great-grandmother (daughter of Joseph Ingersoll) always spoke of the Twichells - especially Carlton. If you hear any Ingersoll stories keep me in mind!

Nancy

Origins of John Ingersoll of Huntington?

John Ingersoll doesn't seem to appear in the Huntington Town records until around 1674.

In "Shipwrights, Fishermen and Passengers From England" by Charles B. Moore, New York Genealogical & Biographical Record, vol. 10, #4, (Oct. 1879) it's stated:

"In 1673, Mr. [John] Grafton [of Salem] was owner of the Nightingale (John Ingersoll, master, who settled Huntington, L.I.), taken by the Dutch at New York."

Was John Ingersoll of Huntington orginally from Salem, or did Mr. Moore confuse John of Huntington with John Ingersoll, son of John, son of Richard of Salem, who is #12 in Lillian Avery's Ingersoll genealogy?

John Ingersoll - late 1800s

My grandfather was John Ingersoll. As far as I knew he was born in or around Philadelphia,PA. I have found his birthdate as 4 September with varying years from 1875 - 1881. He died in June 1926 in Philadelphia. His children were fairly young and had no further contact with his family. I believe he may have had a sister named Elizabeth. If anyone has a possible link I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks!

Re: Stuart Howe Ingersoll

I came across your name while searching the Internet for Stuart Howe Ingersoll, Jr, also known as Mike. If I am not mistaken, I understand that you are his son.

I first knew Mike when both of our fathers where stationed in Pearl Harbor during the period of about 1947 to 1950. At that time we lived in Makalapa Navy housing. Mike and I were the best of friends and spent most all of our time together. We also went to school together at Punahou. I knew his parents, your grandparents, well, and I even knew his grandfather who lived with them in his final years. I also knew Sally very well.

Later my father was transferred to Washington, DC, as was Vice Admiral Ingersoll; the Ingersolls lived about six blocks from our home in Northwest Washington. Again, Mike and I spent much of our free time together until his family moved to a farm in Round Hill, VA. I then would take a Grayhound Bus to Round Hill during summer vacation, and at least once during part of the Christmas holidays... I was there for new year's eve. About 15 years ago I drove by their old farm house outside of Round Hill.

I recall when his mother died; I believe it was due to a fall down a staircase. I last saw Vice Admiral Ingersoll in Newport, RI, but I don't recall having seen Mike or Sally since the early '50s... I had completely lost track of his whereabouts even though I tried to search for him in various directories over the years.

If you don't mind, I would like to know more about your father, including where he went to college and his career. I saw in a Punahou alumni directory that he has since deceased, for which I am greatly saddened. Is Sally available for me to contact? I would love to talk or write to her.

For your information, I attended the Naval Academy and spent most of my career in the Navy on the East Coast, primarily in either Norfolk or in Northern Virginia. My wife and I moved to the Seattle area in 2000 to be near grandchildren. We now live in Redmond, WA, but visit friends back East several times a year; in fact we just came home yesterday from visiting friends in South Carolina as well as my older brother in Virginia Beach.

If you have any photos of our dad that you could attach to an email, I would also love to see them. I have so many fond memories of Mike and his family. I truly do miss him, especially now that I believe that I have made contact with his son.

I do look forward to your reply.

Best regards,

Anthony R. Taylor "Tony"
23263 NE 126th St
Redmond, WA 98053

425-868-6949

usna1964@earthlink.net

Re: PHILIP INGERSOLL d Bainbridge New York

Rick
I'm once again working on Ingersolls. I did post on the message board what I have on the Philip's son Daniel.
Philip of Stillwater and Bainbridge. Had a chance to look at the Ingersoll book on Ancestry and List of Philip children came from a book about Revotionar War soldiers living in Chenago County, New York. It is quite possible that they only listed living children. Lydia who married James Ireland had a sister Anna who married John Ireland. John is probably the John Ireland that deeded land with one of Philip's sons in Saratoga Co. The John that went to Wayne Co. and is listed as a probable son is too old to be the child of Elizabeth. The son Isaac living next door to Philip in 1810 in Bainbridge could not have been born in 1793. My question to you is, is there any other John Ingersoll from the New York line born abt 1767 that could be the one in Savannah, Wayne Co.,New York?
Some other corrections Elizabeth {wife of Philip} was the daughter of Peter Bousman. John was her brother. Stephen Ireland {father of James who married Lydia} Philip Ingersoll and Peter Bousman all lived in the same area of Stillwater. James Ireland and family and Philip Ingersoll and family came to what is today Bainbridge in 1805.
Is there anyone else working on this family?

Re: Jean Ingersoll d. 1977 in Miami, FL

Dear Al,
Since it is possible that there are many "Bruce Ingersolls" in the USA, I should first try to indentify wheether the one that was your friend is the same one that is my relative. My relative, Bruce, had parents by the name of Eldon Jerome "Al" Ingersoll ( this was his adoptive father), and Dorothy "Jean" (nee Morningstar) Ingersoll. Bruce was born Bruce Green and adopted and raised by Al & Jean Ingersoll. They did live in Flint, MI; Devil's Lake, MI & Miami, FL. I was not aware of Fenton, but I suppose it is possible. I was fascinated with the Fenton connection because my husband is from there and his mother still lives there. I also have a half brother who grew up there. I am several ( nearly 15 yrs.) younger than Bruce and only meet him a couple of times when I was very young. I knew his parents much better because besides being related ( to Al) Al, worked for my grandfather for several years. If you think this is the Bruce you are looking for, I am sorry to have to tell you that he died in 1998 in Miami. His wife, Tina, is still living there as far as I know and they had no children.
The entire family, including his parents & step-sisters had heart problems and all died fairly young.
Please respond if this is the Bruce you were looking for. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Kay Wenta

Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire were in the area of Danes Law (old Mercia) in England. So quite possibly you could have Viking ancestors.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercia#Arrival_of_the_Danes

Inkersall : English: habitation name from a place in Derbyshire, recorded in the 13th century as Hinkershil(l) and Hinkreshill. The final element is OE (Old English) hyll Hill; the first may be the ON personal name Ingvarr (see Inger) or an OE byname meaning 'Limper' (cf. Hinchcliffe and Hinckley). Ekwall suggests that it may represent a contracted version of OE hingna aecer monks' field (cf. hine and Acher).

Ingersoll, Inkersall, Inkersole : Roger de Hynkersul 1321 from Inkersall, Derbyshire, England: Shef = T.W. Hall and A.H. Thomas, Descriptive Catalogue of the Charters...forming the Jackson Collection at the Sheffield Public Reference Library, Sheffield 1914.
Hi, I would like to know if there is any Ingersoll who has Dupuytren's Contracture? There has always been rumors that our ancesters came from Norway. I went to see a specialist about hand surgery. He told me that anyone who has dupuytren's contracture has Viking in their DNA.

I noticed your message about my Grandfather, Gilbert Raymond Metzgar/Metzger. I have some information changes about him to give to you. My stepgrandfather was Clare Edward Ingersoll. I have Ingersoll photos unless Rick Ingersoll already gave them to you. I would like to exchange information with you. Let's invite each other to our Member Trees.

INGERSOLLS OF GLOUCESTER, MA

I am interested in any info on the family of Edward Ingersoll born 1886 in Gloucester and Christie Stone. My research so far shows that they both died at a fairly young age and their four sons were then sent to The House of the Angel Guardian which was a type of orphanage/homeless haven in Jamaica Plain, MA. (1920 US Census) The boys, all born in Gloucester, are Edward b.1906, George b:1907, Walter b:1909 and Frank b:1912. I haven't had much luck tracking them beyond this.

All of the sources that Rick posted are secondary or tertiary sources and the information contained in them are estimations and derivations.

Hhe wrote: John INGERSOLL was born 1645 in Falmouth, Cumberland, Maine. He died Apr 1716 in Kittery, York, Maine. John married Deborah GUNNISON on 1666 in Kittery, York, Maine.

A source I Googled says that Portland/Falmouth was destroyed by the Indians in 1675 and resettlement started in 1680. So I doubt very much that John was born there in 1645.

I did not mention in my posting that I now think that John Ingersoll was the one born in Salem 12: 7m 1644 (12 Sep 1644) son of John Ingersoll and Judeth (Felton).

John Ingersoll died before 4 Apr 1716 when his will was proved.

Nancy,

I am James Carr grandson of Violetta Ingersoll. Violetta married Cyril Carr in 1920 and had 3 children Herbert William Carr, Cyril Laking Carr and Jane Carr. Violetta died in 1977. Cyril is still living in NY. I have the death certificate for both Herbert and Harriet. They died in Rutherford NJ and are interned in the Ingersoll Mausoleum Woodlawn Cemetery Bronx NY. I have some information on the Day family. My uncle Cyril never knew anything about Violetta's brothers and would be interested in anything you could share.

Thank you

Jim Carr

Rick, I think we are in the same branch here. There are some differences in the information I've found v.s. what is in your tree. I'm planning a trip to Calhoun County Illinois later this year and will verify the info I have. I'll email you with what I confirm. Thanks for sharing this information. Nancy

John Wesley Ingersoll and family in Calhoun, Illinois

I'm needing assistance from the experts who have tread this area before. What I know from family legend: John Wesley INGERSOLL came to Calhoun County Illinois with his family in early 1800's, married Elvira Greene SQUIERS in 1834, died in 1845 along with several of his children; only child to reach adulthood was Charles Wesley INGERSOLL. Elvira married Chesley TWITCHELL had another family. Charles Wesley INGERSOLL married a young girl Louisa SISCO/CISCO from "outside his class", his family (assuming the Twitchell's) didn't welcome her into the family. She ran away with one of their two sons (Lewis or Joseph), family retrieved son, Charles divorced, then died or disappeared, and the boys were raised by "Grandma Twitchell" aka Elvira TWITCHELL. Both Lewis and Joseph married and remained in Calhoun County raising families from which I descended.

I'm trying to track from John Wesley INGERSOLL back. According to Calhoun County history, John INGERSOLL came to Calhoun County Illinois in 1823, settled on bounty land south of Hardin, later moved south of A.C. SQUIERS. According to the 1830 US Census, John INGERSALL had 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 15-20, 2 males 20-30, 1 male 50-60 (assumed John INGERSOLL), 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 50-60 (assumed Mrs. John INGERSOLL). 1840 US Census reflects 5 INGERSOLL surnamed families in Calhoun County: Garret INGERSOLL b: abt 1813, John INGERSOLL, Risley INGERSOLL b: abt 1816, Scoby INGERSOLL b: about 1811, and Wesley INGERSOLL b: abt. 1812. 1840 State Census reflects similar info with spelling differences.

Has anyone researched this particular line and determined that Garret, Risley, Scoby and John Wesley are sons of John INGERSOLL who served in War of 1812 and moved to military land in Calhoun County in 1823?

I'm relatively new at this and don't want to waste a lot of time on what I think are collateral lines that aren't.

Another interesting note, marriage records reflect Garrett, Risley, and Scoby all married women named Mary METTZ or the same woman?
