Hello!
My fourth great grandfather was Jacque Souffrain. His United States naturalization record shows that he entered America as Jacque Souffrain, but after took the name of John Souffrain. Some family members later spelled it Suffrain.
Jacque Souffrain was born abt 1776 in Bourdeaux, France. He entered the French military at the age of 14, and served for many years in the French navy during Napolean's time. At one point, he was captured by the British, escaped, and was picked up by a French vessel in 1802. He was put off at St. Domingo after becoming ill with yellow fever. He recovered at St. Domingo, and entered America at Philadelphia abt 1803. He decided to remain in America after marrying in 1804, and never returned to France as intended. His daughter, Marinetta Lavalade Suffrain, was born in 1812 and is my 3rd great grandmother.
I do not know enough about the history in that part of the world. I do know that Souffrain is an unusual name and difficult to find anything about it in my genealogy searches. I have seen postings on the LDS sites of wills and marriages of some Souffrains that came from St. Thomas.
What do you think? Is it possible that having spent some time at St. Domingo, that my Jacque Souffrain might be related to the Souffrains in that part of the world? Thank you for your reply to my message. I look forward to talking to you.

L Dalton
My Last name is Souffrain and I'm having the toughest time finding ANYONE! My father was from the Dominican Republic Maximo A Souffrain Born there and died there Feb.27,2006. His mother Violeta Altagracia Souffrain also born and died there, in Santo Domingo. She had a sister Clara and a brother Rolando Souffrain. Their mother's name was Constancia White Souffrain married to Ernsto Souffrain. All I know is that Constancia was half Irish and Ernesto was of French descent. Now read about Jaque Jonh Souffrain recovering in D.R. Before returning to IN and marrying his wife Eleanor. Just wondering if there could be a connection because I haven't found anymore links..... I would greatly appreaciate ANYONE out there that can steer me in the right direction or can make the connections.

Thank you in advance ISIS SOUFFRAIN

Amelia Iredell Johnston/Ainsworth (1838 Washington Co. Al)

Amelia Iredell Johnston, b. 1838 Washington Co. Alabama, was the daughter of the widow of Levi Ainsworth, Martha _________, b. bef 1803--and James Johnston, b. abt 1776 Va., d.abt 1851 Washington Co. Alabama

Three illegitimate children, Lafayette, Jane Amelia and Amelia were acknowledged in the will of James Johnston and Martha Ainsworth.

would IREDELL be the maiden name of Martha --or did James Johnston have an Iredell relative?

James Johnston was the son of John Johnston and Joyce Powell. Maybe if we could get further back, there might be an Iredell grandparent.

Patrick,

Many thanks. I'll read your document carefully. and check my sources but if Robert and Ellinor were married at Loweswater on 26th April 1628, as I think, then 1676 seems late for the baptism of a son of theirs.

Edgar

I am still here after all this time and grateful that you replied to my message. My 2nd great grandfather was John Suffrain Iredell, sister to your Virginia. Samuel Ellis Iredell and Marinetta, his wife, came from Philadelphia as a young man and settled in Wayne County, Indiana. You probably already know this, as well that they were Quakers. Samuel’s parents were Jonathan Iredell and Hannah Ellis. I have yet to discover much about Jonathan and Hannah, although I have just completed some research about Samuel’s children and their families. I would be happy to send it to you. Can you
receive in Adobe Acrobat or .pdf format?

I also have a family group record of John W. Koogle and his family based on the 1880 and 1900 federal censuses, Earlham Cemetery records, and the Indiana death and
marriage records index. Perhaps you have more about John Koogle’s particular family than I have.

Also, I know very little about Marinetta’s family, other than that her father was from France and her mother from Germany. I would love to hear what you have on them as
well. I look forward to hearing from you again.

Hi, Ruth! I have our family history showing that Robert & Hannah had a son Johnathan (middle name not known) from which I am descended. However, I don't have 'backup' for this other than a family tree that's been passed down from my grandmother and great aunt. You mention that Charles was their only son. Are you sure?

Thanks!

Patrick,

I'm studying Iredales in Cumberland and was interested to read about Thomas.

There was a Thomas Iredale bap 16Feb1673/4 at Workington in Cumberland. His father was Martin Iredale who was buried at Workington 18Nov1675 . I wonder if they are the same chap. I have no further record of this Thomas so it is possible he emigrated.

The earliest records I know about for my branch of the family were at Workington when John Iredale married Sarah Wilson 26Oct1688. Although I have no confirmation of it I guess Sarah Wilson was daughter of the Quaker Christopher Wilson from Greysouthen.

There was also an Ann Iredale who married Daniel Bell at Workington 19Nov1678.

It seems likely that Thomas, Ann and my John were related, but I don't know how.

Do you have any further information about the early life of your Thomas?

Incidentally, in case you don't know, Paidsaybragg is really Pardshaw Crag where there was an early Quaker meeting place.

Edgar

I would be glad to exchange data on my Iredell line. My Iredells come from my wife's side of the family. Many of the handwritten notes and data that I have for them come from my In-Laws. I have done some research on Ancestry.com and found additional information in their "Gene-Pool" database. I currently work out of town and come home for the weekends. So, I may not respond to your messages immediately, since I only get to read them on the weekends. I will send to you, separately, some information from my Family TreeMaker database. And if you can confirm that we have a connection, I can send you a CD with some of my research data, a GEDCOM file, and other goodies. - pat

He was born in 1810 in Philadelphia, and was
married to Marinetta Lavalade Suffrain in 1835. They later moved to Wayne County,
Indiana. We believe that his father’s name was Jonathan Iredell who married Hannah
Ellis. These families were Quakers or Friends that came from England and settled in New
Jersey and Philadelphia.

As for Thomas Iredell's parents, I obtained that information from The Biographical Annals of Montgomery County, Pa. I can not find the original Xerox copies, so I am not sure what the page numbers are. But here is an excerpt :

ROBERT IREDELL, for many years editor and proprietor of the Norristown Herald and Free Press, and for nearly a quarter of a century the postmaster of Norristown, was born October 15, 1809, at the family homestead in Horsham township, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania....

Robert Iredell was a lifelong member of the Society of Friends. His immigrant ancestor, Thomas Iredell, was the first of the family who was a Friend, his father being Robert Iredell, of Rigg Bank, England, whose wife was Ellinore Jackson. According to the record, the son, Thomas Iredell, the immigrant, was baptized in 1676, corroborating the certificate in the statement that his mother was “no Friend.”

I will send you the MS Word document containing the entire write-up for Robert Iredell.

Patrick.

I do have some info on Marinetta's siblings and parents that I would be happy to share.Hope this reaches you after all this time!
