Alexander E. Irvin from Ireland
Hello Everyone... I am looking for any PARENT information regarding a one Alexander E. Irvin ( born abt: 1825-1830 in Ireland) who came over from Ireland ( not exactly sure when) but he married a Isabella Gordon ( born abt 1830), daughter of David Gordon in South Carolina. David Gordon and his family all came from Ireland as well. I find this family in the 1850 census, with Alexander living with the Gordons.
I also find then in the 1880's census having moved to Tennessee.

Alexander E. Irvin and Isabella Gordon had the following children

John, Smith, Patrick David aka David Patrick or DP( 1863- 1920), and Mary.

Patrick David is my GG Grandfather. He changed his last name to Erwin.

Re: William Irvin

Please note, on my original post, I stated I had found an 1880 Census... That is incorrect, it was an 1850 Census.

Also, today I have yet discovered another startling fact. This came while looking for more information on his sister Ann.

I have discovered that a John & Sarah (Matlock) Irvin were listed as my Great Grandfathers parents. They had settled in Danville, Hendricks, Indiana in 1827.

Can anyone help me with this dilemma I seem to be in. Does anyone have either of these two sets of people within their family tree's that could lend me a hand on this.

Again, I stress that my Great Grandfather, William Irvin stated at some point that his parents had died of influenza when he was about 2 years of age.

Now I do not know if and who his parents are. There is now a chance that it could be either Andrew and Sarah Irvin or John & Sarah (Matlock) Irvin and one set are the ones who helped raise him besides his sister Ann and her husband.

At this time, I do not know for sure if Andrew and Sarah are his parents, or other family members who were taking care of him.

He also stated that his father had mentioned there were about 5 siblings, and that he was raised by his older sister and her family after his parents died.

In an article written about my Great Grandfather's passing, his sister who was still living, was well into her 70's and still lived in Danville, Hendricks, Indiana.

Randal,
I chanced upon your posting this evening and realize that it is now almost two years old. Fred Nathaniel Irvin was the name of my late wife's grandfather. He was an accountant and lived most of his life, to my knowledge, in Houston, TX. The date on the picture seems reasonable. He served in the Army in WWI in Europe and survived a mustard gassing. He later r'cvd a degree from SMU in Dallas. My wife and I have four children and I'd like to have the picture if it is, in fact, him. I'm not certain, but I may have seen and actually have a copy of this same picture. My wife died last September and my children and I are attempting to organize our pictures. Thank you.

I have located some information on John Irvin in memoirs from an Allegheny newspaper. It says he was born in Mifflin, PA., which I believe is near Stoneburgh, PA. It also says he enlisted during the Civil War.
Going back the article mentions his father but doesn't give his father name. It says his father was born at Davis Island Dam.
Does anyone know where Davis Mile Dam is located? Or does anyone have further info?

Birth date and Place of birth is not none but is said to be Armagh Ireland, the same for Jane Irvin nee Watson who died 15 / 9 / 1896 at Tarradale and buried 16 / 9 / 1896 and buried beside James.
I am fairly new to family research. I was wondering if you have any info on my grandfather John Loper Irvin, born abt 1838 in Pennsylvania, married to Amelia Semelroth or Schemiroth. Home in 1880 was Stoneburgh, Allegheny, PA. I am stuck and haven't been able to go back any further for his ancestors. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Christopher "Arwhin"/Erwin/Irvin of Prince Edward Co. Virginia
Perhaps someone can shed some light on these folks. From the Prince Edward County, Virginia Wills, 1754-1765. This will appears to have been proven either in 1760 or 1766. It is hard to tell. I am guessing at least some of the children moved to Bedford/Campbell county after the death of their father. And who might the John “Erwin” be? Be aware of variant spellings. Any clues out there? Edwin

Page 43. Will. She married Milton Middleton around 1899, I think it was in June. Also, it is said that she was either full blooded, or half cherokee. There is some confusion as to her mother's last name. I have seen some list it as BALL and others list it SERGENT, but the first name is Fanny.

Any information is appreciated.

My Great-Grandfather was William John Irving (Irvine, Irvin) of whom we know little other than he married in Anna Adelaide Seely in 1867 at Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. He had three children by Anna and after his death in 1894 Anna and the three adult children moved to the USA (Boston, MA area). We suspect that Anna might be a second wife, but that is just a guess. Our William appears in the 1881 & 1891 census from which we calculate his birth as 1808. We have no information on his ancestors.

From you information - this cannot be the same person, but maybe a relation. Do you have information on any other Williams?

My DNA test results connect me to the Irwin clan in Scotland. Our William came from Ireland, but we don't know when and how - and if he was born there or in Scotland.

I am looking for any links to William Irwin/Irvine who was born in Ireland or Quebec/New Brunswick, Canada, between 1848 and 1851. In 1883 William married Mary Ann Ritchey/Ritchie who was born in Quebec/New Brunswick. He may have been an orphan or born out of wedlock because he listed his parents as "unknown".
He was of Scottish descent. He told the family that his grandfather in Scotland has wanted to marry a woman of whom the family did not approve. He left Scotland for a brief stay in Ireland and then moved on to Canada.
I would be glad to share my research and am hoping to find Irvine/Irwin connections.
Thanks for reading my message

I noticed in re-reading my posting that I had said that William Irwin/Irvine/Irvin had said that the story about someone leaving Scotland related to his grandfather. I should have said that it could have been his father.

William G. Irwin married Mary Ann Ritchey/Ritchie ( b1862, Quebec) in Ontario on Sept. 22, 1983. On their marriage registration he gave his age as 35 which would suggest a birth year of 1848. He gave his parents as 'unknown' and birthplace as Ireland.

By the time of the 1891 Canadian census there were changes. He gave his birthplace as Quebec and his age as 40 which would suggest 1851 as his birth year.

On the 1901 census William gave his surname as Irvine, age 50 and birthplace as Quebec. All family members are listed as Irvine.

William and Mary Ann/Anne had the following children-

Eliza Lillie b 1884
William Ritchie b 1887 moved to Alberta
George Elmer b 1893
Mervin or Marvin b 1900
Hannah b 1890

Hannah married Robert Earl Best ( only child of Clara Ellen Creech and James A. Best) in 1916. On their marriage registration her name is given as Hannah Irvine, her father is Wm Irvine and her mother is Mary Ritchie.

My thinking is that William either searched for his parentage or someone contacted him between his marriage in 1883 and the 1901 census.

Later, around 1930 William received a package in the mail that contained a letter, family tree charts, various documents and a signet ring. William's daughter, Hannah, and one of her daughters were visiting at the time and remembered seeing holly leaves on the documents. Whatever information was in the package upset him. After a couple of days of intense discussions he threw it all in the fire and said something about not being good enough for them before. The thinking in the family was that William was either born out of wedlock or orphaned. It's a mystery.

William was a cabinetmaker in Horning's Mills, Ontario. He was also an accomplished piper and travelled around Canada and several states training various Masonic and police pipe bands.William had relatives in New York and Pennsylvania and perhaps in other states - I don't know their names.

I have found some names of possible relatives in New York state. Their last names were Densem/Densom and Adair. Unfortunately I don't know if they were related to the Best or Irvines.

Thanks for reading my posting .
Best of luck for your research!

Re: John M. Irvin b. 1851 - living in Scioto & Adams Co. OH

Patty, have you checked the records on James Marion Irvin, married to Vanelya Meeker? James died very young, the tragedy put the children in a Childrens Home. That is where the records stop until they marry and move on. Quick note on the Irvin clan, their middle name was typically used adding another brick to their infamous wall.
From what I found while in the area, the children lost touch or had little to do with their siblings. I have been looking for my grandfather for over ten years, only luck I found was a few census before he married and draft cards for WW I and WW II.
Found anything new? Please let me know.
Gloria

Newton Bill Irvin, US Marshall, OK

Looking for more info on Newton "Bill". It has been confirmed that Bill was a U.S. Marshall in Oklahoma during th days of 'Hanging Judge' Isaac Parker. They were based out of Fort Smith, Arkansas. An out of print book "Hell on the Border" chronicles the days of indian fighting and outlaw chasing. One chapter talks about Deputy U.S. Marshall N.B. Irvin. He was part of a posse that chased down and hung a man who had raped and murdered a woman.

He married Rosa Alice Bigham of Ellis CO, TX in that county.

Looking for additional information on this line, marriage.
