IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Robert E. Irwin, 75, of 221 Magowan Ave., died Monday, March 19, 2001, at his home following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. The Rev. Robert Dean will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.
Memorials may be made to WSUI, Mercy Home Health Care or the charity of your choice.
Mr. Irwin was born May 23, 1925, in Eliza, Ill., the son of Paul and Ruth Rausch Irwin. He married Phyllis Matson on June 6,1947, in Kansas City, Kan.
He was a 1951 graduate of the University of Iowa, receiving a bachelor's in political science and had done work toward his doctorate. He had been employed at WMT in 1953 and at WKAR, Michigan State Television from 1954-57. From 1957-60 he taught film and television at the University of Iowa. He was a senior producer at WSUI from 1960 until his retirement in 1989.
He was a member and past president of ARC of Johnson County, Phi Delta Kappa, honorary education fraternity, University of Iowa Alumni Association, and the University of Iowa Retirees Association.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Iowa City; his son, Robert E. Irwin of Iowa City; two daughters, Melissa Detweiler and her husband, Bill, of Ames, Melinda Irwin of Iowa City; one grandson, Matthew Detweiler of Ames; one brother, Dwight Irwin and his wife, Vivian, of Muscatine; one half sister, Ellen Burton and her husband, Paul, of Illinois; two half brothers, George Irwin and his wife, Marguerite, of Peoria, Ill.; Paul Irwin of North Carolina; three nieces and one nephew
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother.
