MUSCATINE, Iowa - Carl E. Irwin, 87, Muscatine, died Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Carrington Place of Muscatine.
Funeral Service will be at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. The Rev. Robert Pickerell will officiate. Casket bearers are Alan Eversmeyer, David Cook, Gary Karkosh, Larry Irwin, Kenneth Irwin and Mike Brogly. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery with military rites by the combined units of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1565 and American Legion Post 27.
Memorials may be directed to First Christian Church or the Parkinson's Association.
Mr. Irwin was born February 20, 1920, in Muscatine County, the son of Charles Henry and Priscilla Grace Andries Irwin. He married Vivian Gritton on February 15, 1948, at First Christian Church.
He was raised on Muscatine County farms. When he was a teenager, he was in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the medical corps in Europe.
He worked at the Rock Island Arsenal and upon retiring from there he was a service man for Montgomery Ward. He then worked as a maintenance man for the Muscatine Health Clinic.
His hobbies were photography, having neighborhood children come and visit him and teaching the boys how to repair small engines such as lawn mowers. He enjoyed being able to help his family, neighbors and friends as a handy man. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and the Holy Land.
He was a member of First Christian Church, where he had served as a deacon, CYF sponsor, Cub Scout leader, and president of the Christian Mens Fellowship.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Irwin of Muscatine; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Anna Chatfield Morse and Dorothy Tisor; and four brothers, Eddie in infancy, Walter, Fred and Raymond Irwin
