CEMETERY: Oregon J. Ellen ISH, wife of Jacob

You can see part of it in your photo of Jacob's grave, but attached here is a better photo of her gravestone to the immediate left of his in the Jacksonville Cemetery in Oregon. The photo was taken by a woman named Teri Sutton and uploaded to Pinterest on Halloween, 2011 at this website: http://pinterest.com/pin/415070292/

J. Ellen
Beloved Wife of Jacob Ish
born Oct 12 1825
died July 28 1877

The photo is excellent, deep blue sky, good contrast on the lettering, nice and clear. There's a religious inscription on the bottom somewhat obscured by the fence: ".... in God's own morn ... orb ....." This was a traditional inscription on graves of that era, and with a little research, I puzzled it out:

MY MOTHER:
In God's own morn / her orb will rise
once more a star / of Paradise

I am no relation to the ISH family; this was a RAOGK. :)

Milton C. Ish marriage article: 7 Nov 1904

Daily Nevada State Journal Monday, November 07, 1904

FORMER RENOITE MARRIED AT GOLDFIELD

Milton C. Ish and Miss Evelyn
Roach were married at Goldfield last
week. It was the first marriage in
the new mining camp and on account
of the prominence and popularity of
the young couple was an important
matter of interest in the bonanza
district.

Justice of the Peace Collins of
Goldfield performed the ceremony,
which was witnessed by a large number
of friends and many relatives of
the happy couple.

Mr. Ish is well known in Reno. He
resided here for a long time, but when
Tonopah and Goldfield began attracting
attention he cast his lot in the
southern portion of the state and immediately
his efforts were crowned
with success. Despite the fact that
he is now reputed to be one of Nevada's
wealthy men, Milton C Ish is
still the same old "Milt" to his hundreds
of friends.

Miss Roach that was for a long
time made her her home in Tonopah
and is one of the belles of Nye county.

Mr. and Mrs Ish will make their
home at Goldfield. Their many friends
throughout Nevada join with the
Journal in wishing them all the happiness
that falls to the lot of a well mated couple.

Oakland Tribune Saturday, March 12, 1927

OAKLANDERS OWN BONANZA AT WEEPAH

Frank Horton, Sr., Principal
Owner of Electric Properties,
Scene of Rich Strike,
Claims Residence Here

Others Fortune-Hit in Eastbay
Include Frank Ish,
Baseball Magnate Who Has
Property Next to Strike

By D. E. CRUZAN,
Staff Correspondent The TRIBUNE
TONOPAH, Nev., March 12.—
The future of Weepah, the. phenomenal
strike on the property of
the Electric Gold Mining company,
carries pledge of fortune to a number
of Oakland residents, several
of whom bid fair to become millionaires,
if the development of the
property lives up to its present
showing.
Chief of these is, of course,
Frank Horton Sr., principal owner
of the Electric properties. Horton
claims Oakland as his home, having
lived there for several years.
Next comes Frank Ish, associated
With J. Cal Ewing in the ownership
of the Oakland Baseball club and
in numerous ventures.
Next there are the holders of
varying portions of the 35,000
shares of stock in the Electric,
which were put on the market by
Horton some years ago at twenty
cents a share to California buyers.
The list of these holders, some 2000
Oaklanders being stockholders, includes
the following from that city:
F. W. Baude, a director in the company;
L. C. Fraser, insurance
broker; Dr. W. H. Simmons, Dr.
Labarra, N. E. Nicholson, Attorney
F. W. Bunker, A. Wolf, Alexander
Smith of Alameda, and Lou
Crellin of Pleasanton, member of
the family that formerly owned the
Hotel Crellin.
While Frank Ish has no direct
connection with the Electric company,
he has a large numbers of
claims which adjoin the electric
holdings, blanketing them on two
sides to the west and to the south.
Ish is thought to hold about fifteen
claims, the same number as
the Electric owns. The ledge on
which the big strike was made
runs in a direction that should cut
through much of the Ish holdings.
Engineers who have visited the
property are a unit in declaring
that the showing to date has not
been exaggerated and that if anything
the tonnage figures are conservative.
The first assay showed
$78,000 to the ton, and it is thought
that new assays will show the ore
to run at least two thousand dollars
better.

The Oakland Tribune Monday, April 11, 1927

The flag at the Oakland ball
park was at half mast yesterday
out of respect of Frank M. Ish,
who passed away at his home on
Fairmount street shortly before the
afternoon game got under way. Ish
was one of the big three stockholders
of the Oakland association and
in his passing baseball lost an old
foundation. During 1906, Ish helped
to keep the Coast league together.
The San Francisco fire and earthquake
all but wrecked the league
when Ish and J. Cal Ewing, present
head of the Oakland association,
went to the rescue. Ish became
president of the San Francisco
club and remained until he
took a trip around the world. Then
Cal Ewing was elevated from vice-
president to president, and about
1914 the pair disposed of the San
Francisco stock and ???????
have been associated with Del Howard
in the Oakland club.

Oakland Tribune Tuesday, April 12, 1927

BALL LEADERS ATTEND LAST RITES FOR ISH

Rev. Edgar Gee Preaches
Funeral Oration at Services at
Crematory.

The funeral of Frank M. Ish,
???
took place at the New California Crematorium, 4199
Piedmont avenue today. Members of the Pacific coast baseball world
were present.
Scores of floral pieces were sent
by the Oakland baseball team, the
Oakland Elks, and other organizations
and individuals. Rev. Edgar F. Gee of
St. Peters Episcopal church, Berkeley, preached the
funeral oration. Bernard Rosenthal, son-in-law of Ish, was
in charge of arrangements.
??? SEALS IN 1906.
Ish had been ill at his home, ?? Claremont avenue,
for several ?????????
Howard Ish; one son, Roy Ish, and two daughters,
Mrs. Bernard Rosenthal and Mrs. Kenneth Taylor, survive.
In 1906 when the San Francisco earthquake and fire
had all but wrecked the coast baseball league, Ish and his nephew,
J. Cal Ewing, went to the rescue.
Ish became president of the San Francisco club and remained
in this position until he took a trip
???? his place. In 1914 they both disposed of their stock
and have since ??? baseball with Del Howard in the Oakland
club. At the time of his death, Ish was vice-president of
the team with Cal Ewing, president.
NATIVE OF CONTRA COSTA.
Ish was born in Contra Costa
county in the San Ramon valley
near Danville. When only 14, he
became an Indian fighter with
General Nelson A. Miles in Oregon
and won a captain's commission in
the militia of that state. Later
he was graduated from the Missouri
school of Mines and went
to Bear, Ark., where he prospected
for gold in the Ozarks.
When the Cripple Creek rush
began in Colorado, he trekked into
that frontier town. He left a short
time before the big strike there.
But he was in Tonopah and Goldfield
in time for the big Nevada
strikes, coming out of the Iatter
with a fair fortune. He is said to
have built the first modern house
in Tonopah and installed the water
system in Goldfield, which is still used.

Oakland Tribune Monday, April 11, 1927

Magnate Dies
FRANK M.

Woodland Daily Democrat Friday, November 09, 1906

MRS. HODGE DEAD.

A Beloved, Intellectual Member
of Woodland Society.

Had Suffered Two Years With Heart
Trouble-Paralysis Immediately
Preceded Death.

Mrs. George Hodge died Thursday
evening about 6:30 o'clock at the
family residence on North Third
street in this city. For nearly two
years deceased had been ailing with
heart failure and for a long time had
been unable to leave her home. On
Wednesday she suffered a paralytic
stroke, affecting her speech and left
side. She was compelled to take to
her bed from which she was destined
never again to arise.
The funeral will be held on Saturday
at 2 p. m., from the family residence.
Rev. H. Culton of Winters
will officiate.
Deceased was a native of Napa
county, 48 years and 9 months of age.
Her maiden name was Fannie L. Ish.
She spent her girlhood days in Napa,
Solano and Yolo counties and in April,
1884, was married in Winters to Mr.
Hodge.
About thirteen years ago the family
moved to Woodland but still retain
the ranch near Winters, which Mr.
Hodge recently leased to other parties.
Mrs. Hodge was a member of Yolo
Chapter, No. 60, O. E. S., and was
prominently identified with the work
of the order until illness compelled
her to abandon it. She was also a
member of the Presbyterian church in
Winters.
Besides her husband; deceased
leaves four children to mourn her loss,
two sons, Howard and Waverly, and
two daughters, Misses Gladys and
Hazel, all of Woodland. A. B. Ish of
Winters is a brother of deceased.
There are other brothers and sisters
residing in other portions of the state,
but we are unable to ascertain their
names.
Mrs. Hodge was a woman of more
than ordinary literary attainments.
She industriously improved every opportunity,
to study the best authors in
literature and her acquaintance with
them was wide and varied and she was
capable of discussing them and their
works in a singularly entertaining
manner.
She was practical in her Christianity
and her daily walk in life was characterized
by lofty motives and pure Instincts.
In Christian faith she lived
and with a Christian's hope she passed
away to whatever reward awaits her
on the other side.
As a friend she was worthy of affection,
for loyalty to her friends was
one of her most striking characteristics.
Indeed, she never spoke ill of
anyone. She was silent about those
whom she deemed unworthy of praise
and commendation and in her conversation
about others she invariably
used terms of respect.
In all the relations of life she acquitted
herself as a kindly, sympathetic,
womanly woman. As a wife
she was devoted and affectionate
cheerfully and faithfully performing
all the duties and responsibilities imposed
upon her. As a mother she was
loving, patient and careful In her efforts
to give her children examples
worthy of emulation, and to mold
their characters aright. As a woman
her character stands out to be commended
and admired.
She has gone from our midst a true
gentle spirit, loved by all who were
familiar with her virtues and sincerely
mourned by a large circle of
friends and acquaintances.

Woodland Daily Democrat Thursday, February 03, 1910

G. W. HODGE
PASSES AWAY

Was One of Woodland's Most
Estimable Characters

Had Been in Failing Health Since
Last June-Lived in Yolo County
Forty-six Years

The reaper of death has been busy
in the ranks of old residents since the
beginning of the new year. The last
to fall before the remorseless sickle Is
George Hodge, who passed away Wednesday
afternoon.
Mr. Hodge's fatal illness began last
June, with a slight attack of paralysis,
from which he never wholly recovered.
It affected his heart and eventually resulted
fatally. He was confined to
his room practically ever since last
August.
The funeral will take place from the
family residence Friday afternoon at
1:30 o'clock. Interment will be in the
city cemetery.
George W. Hodge was a native of Illinois,
where he was born on the 20th
of December, 1857. He was therefore
52 years, 1 month and 22 days old.
When he was but 6 years of age his
parents crossed the plains to California,
locating near Winters. There Mr.
Hodge was educated and grew to manhood.
He engaged in agriculture and
horticulture, but in 1893 took up his
residence in Woodland and engaged in
the grocery business. In 1905 he retired
from the grocery business, but
retained his interests in agriculture.
In April, 1883, he was married to
Miss Fannie Ish, who died November
6, 1906. To them were born four children,
Miss Gladys Hodge and Mrs. D.
E. Streeter, of Woodland, and Howard
Hodge of San Francisco and Waverly
Hodge of Woodland. Howard did not
arrive until a few hours after his father
passed away.
His mother, Mrs. T. Hodge, also survives
him, also a sister, Mrs. Henry
Robinson and four brothers, Otis, Olin
and Lin, all of Winters, and J. F.
Hodge of Auburn.
The personal traits of Mr. Hodge
were lovable and his habits of life worthy
of emulation. He was quiet and
reserved in manner, but courteous and
considerate in his deportment toward
others. He was a man of fine moral
strength and amiable qualities, and his
unobtrusive life was honorable to himself
and beneficial to the community
and times in which he lived. He found
his greatest contentment and happiness
in the society of his family. It awoke
the gentler sentiments of his heart
and soul to a better, higher and nobler
life. His home life was ideal and his
happiness was only broken by the
touch of death's icy hand when his
wife died over three years ago. During
her illness his devotion to her was
a poem of love. Her death was a severe
blow, a deep sorrow entering where
love had before reigned supreme. But
no murmur escaped when the bitter
cup was pressed to his lips. Christian
fortitude sustained him in his sore
bereavement. His children were the
only rays of sunshine in his stricken
home and to them he was deeply devoted
until the close of his life. We
shall not look upon his kindly face
again, but the example of his life, his
devotion to duty, his rigid adherence
to honorable purpose and his love of
home will make us better for having known him.

Woodland Daily Democrat Thursday, June 05, 1913

DECREES FROM CUPID'S COURT

Miss Hodge the Bride of A. Since the death of her father
and mother, the late Mr. and Mrs. Goo.
Hodge, several years ago, she has had
charge of the estate. Frank
Stuart Ford, pastor of the First Christian
church, San Francisco. They are
at Stanford today, witnessing the university Rugby football game.

Woodland Daily Democrat Wednesday, November 13, 1935

Boy Who Dreamed of Fame, Fortune,
Return a Success

G. Howard Hodge, the name which in New York, means one of the largest
and most outstanding hat manufacturers, is coming back to Woodland
and Winters, where his name recalls a boy, ambitious but mischievous. He is coming
back to visit his sisters, Mrs. Edward Streeter and Mrs. Archie
Bowen, and his brother, Waverly Hodge, all of Winters.
To old-timers, he isn't Mr. Hodge, the tycoon hat manufacturer, he is
George Hodge's son Howard, and successful as he is now, it is his boyhood
career and background that interests them most.
Started Store
They remember him as the son of
George Hodge, who himself came to
Winters in a covered wagon caravan:
from Missouri with his parents and
grew up on a farm. George Hodge
then bought a farm for himself, later
moving to Woodland, where he went
into the grocery business. That was
the firm of Forester and Hodge.
It was here Howard had his boy-
hood of swimmin' in the creeks, dis-.
tributing handbills to buy a bat,
broken windows, marbles, hunting for
mallard ducks—and getting them too,
—mushrooms picked wild in the
fields, some for supper and some to
sell, "pumping" the church organ for
a dollar a month, fighting in the alley
after school, collecting bottles and
sacks to buy a football, delivering
groceries during school vacations and
all the rest of the incidents in the
boyhood career of G. Howard Hodge,
which was equally as successful in its
way as his manhood career has been.
Miss Harriett Lee of Woodland was
one of Howard's teachers and she
recalls him as an "exceptional student."
Fortune Beckons
It was just as his high school days
were. closing that Howard began
planning to run away to New York
to make his fortune. But his father
bought him a new suit case and saw
Howard off for San Francisco to
make his fortune. And Howard's dream
came true.
But first he took a job as stock
boy in Mueller and Rans millinery
factory. Traveling salesman was the next step up,
but the World War came along and took up
considerable time.
Soon after the flurry was over, he
was establishing his own first small
factory at 15 Stockton street in San
Francisco. Then a bigger factory on
Market street with the newly successfully
launched Catallan line of
women's hats to his credit.
New York, however, was his goal,
so he began a business there, first in
a small way and then increasing it to
the present large and beautiful establishments.
So now he is coming home again,
as every youngster dreams, of coming home—successful, admired and
remembered.

Carroll W. ISH b. 1815 TN. mar.Mary J. BALDRIDGE. Need help.

I am hoping that someone on this board can help me clear up some data on the ISH family.

Carroll and Mary had several children - some born in Missouri and others in California. Carroll is last found in the 1880 CA census in Winters, Yolo Co., CA. I have not found a death record for him or his wife.

One of Carroll's children, John or Jacob married Rosa "Jennie" GABLE b. Oct. 1860 CA, died Dec. 21, 1922 - county not certain.

My interest is in the person Rosa married. One census lists him as John W. and another lists her husband as Jacob.

Rosa and whomever, had following children born CA:
Lilly b. Nov. 1879
Harry E. b. Feb. 1880, died Oct. 4, 1935 San Francisco.
Harry married a Dollie (no last name)
Roy Vernon b. Dec. 28, 1885, died May 23, 1940 San Francisco
He married Alice Cary ROBERTS b. Apr. 2, 1885 CA, died July 7, 1966 San Jose, CA.
Rex W. b. Jan. 1887, died Jun. 23, 1918 in France
Max E. b. May 2, 1891, died Nov. 8, 1971 Monterey Co., CA
Max married Henriette B. BAR b. July 1890, died July 31, 1962 Monterey Co. They had Shelby b. ca 1921 and Stewart B.
born Nov. 18, 1923, died Aug. 1, 1993 Monterey Co., CA

If you have any information at all regarding children or relatives of any of the above individuals, please let me hear from you. Especially, if you can confirm which ISH male married Rosa "Jennie" GABLE.

Many thanks for your help,

Revae

Jacob D. Ish

I am looking for any information for Jacob D. Ish (father, mother, birthdate/place, etc.). I do know that he was born in Virginia sometime around 1800 or 1799. His wife was named Agnes (she was born in Pennsylvania, sometime around 1807-1808) and I know the names of his children (David, Mary, & Marim). I also know that he lived (and probably died) in Wyandot County, OH.

But I come to a dead end at that point...

Thank you, in advance, for any help you can give me on this.
