My husband passed away June 1 this year. We live in Ky & have quite a bit of Ishmael history. Up until 2 years ago, we had an annual reunion where we shared info. About 7 or 8 years ago I had contacted an Ishmael in state of Wash. who was trying to find some family history. That year he came to this reunion, via Oklahoma, where he picked up his mom & dad and brought them with him. We were able to trace back the three lines going back to three brothers (we don't know where they came here from) who are the origin for the rest that overspread the country. The family from Oklahoma is off one brother and there is a line in Montgomery Co., Ky and even though we knew there were Ishmaels over there, we never knew them. Some of them came to this same reunion and were able to trace their ancestory back to the third brother. It was very interesting. One of our cousins made and posted a huge chart where we could all trace back our branch. I'm giving all this from memory, but have quite a bit of paperwork with some details. But it appears noone knows where these three brothers came here to the US from. If anyone is interested, I can try to dig some of this info out and we can attempt to sort it out.

I know all the cyber cousins have kindly shared information on our Ishmael lineage. I am trying to complete my DAR papers using Benjamin Ishmael as my Revolutionary War ancestor. How do I prove that James Ishmael that married Mary McFerrin was his son? I know the line is accurate, but I don't have documentation. What proof exists that I can write for?
Thanks for the help!

Darkis/Dorcas Cross - wife of Benjamin Ishmael (1790-1835)?

All, I am actually a Cross researcher, but may be able to provide a useful link for this group.
I've browsed the Ishmail mailing list, board, and Ancestry site & have seen several Ishmael sources tempted by the 1805 Greene County marriage record between Benjamin Essman and Darkis Cross, surety provided by Shadrack Cross. I believe those researchers are right to be intrigued. "Darkis" Cross was Shadrack Cross's sister & they were children of Henry Cross & Lydia Morris of Greene County.
My reasons for thinking Benjamin Essman was probably Benjamin Ishmael are:
1) in the 1820 census, Henry Cross, then aged about 79, is listed as head of household adjacent to Benjamin Ishmael in Giles County, Tenn. It is a large household with many youngsters. Henry's son Shadrack had six sons by two wives, all born by 1820 and since he doesn't appear elsewhere in the census, I believe he and his family, and possibly brother Benjamin F. Cross & family are included in Henry's household. The proximity to Benjamin Ishmael and the migration from Greene County of both families makes me think they had a family relationship.
2) Shadrack's will, proved in Shelby County, Tenn in 1841 includes a clause: Item ninth. It is my wish that my executors pay to the heirs of Benjamin Ishmail two hundred & twenty three dollars when they call for it.
3) The names Shadrack, Henry, and Micajah, which are this Cross family's traditional men's names, also appear in the descendants of Benjamin Ishmael, and I've even seen a Dorcas among those descendents. Actually Shadrack's name seems to come from his mother's Morris family.

So, FWIW, I'd like to offer these tidbits to the Ishmael researchers. I also have a couple of questions based on my guess/belief that Benjamin Essman and Benjamin Ishmael are the same: is Benjamin's frequently published birth date of 1790 documented? This would make him 15 at the time of the marriage, and his father Thomas would have been over 50 when he was born. Could Benjamin have been older, or could there have been another generation between Thomas and Benjamin? Also, there seems to be a large gap in the ages of Benjamin's children, so even if the Greene County marriage record is his, its possible Darkis may have died after a couple of children and Benjamin remarried in Giles County.

Any comments?

Yes, I agree. You are correct. I am a descendant through their son, John G. Ishmael, who married Jane Wyatt. However, I have that Benjamin and Dorcus both died in 1835 in Old Bolivar, Lawrence County, Arkansas Territory during a flu epidemic. Their son, Hiram Wyatt Ishmael, married Alabama Tennessee "Tennie" Nelson. Their daughter, Lola Elmira Ishmael married John Henry Graddy (Grady), my maternal grandparents.

Hi

I'm looking for more info about my great-great-grandmother Margaret Ishmael. She married a Clarke and either lived in or moved to Demarara in Guyana. However, her daughter Louisa Clarke (my great-gran) came to Barbados from Guyana to 'visit family' and subsequently settled and married there, so it's unclear whether Margaret herself was originally from Barbados or not. The rest of my family on that side is from Barbados.

Any pointers? I'm guessing any dates would be in the 19th century, can't be more specific than that.

Re: Where does the Last name Ishmael come from?

Dear Kathryn

Just come across your message. You may well have the answer by now. I come from the Ishmael family of Yspytty Ystwyth in Cardiganshire. It is very likely that this surname, like other Welsh surnames originates through patronymic naming ie the child took the father's first name as a 'surname' eg David Jones would have a son Evan Davies who would have a son John Evans and so on. This is rather a simplistic example because in fact they used the word 'ap' meaning 'son of' and would string forefathers' names out as if reciting the family tree. Therefore one would have John ap Evan ap David ap John and so on. When the Welsh were encouraged to adopt the English method of surnames the man would take his father's first name as a surname and then that passed on through the generations. It is therefore likely that an Ishmael passed his first name on as a surname sometime in the 17th or 18th century.
Why Ishmael? Biblical names were popular and the census returns show us many with the names Moses, Benjamin, Isaac etc.
Having said this, word of mouth in my family is that Portuguese Jews were recruited into the tin mines in Cornwall in the 16th century and that they brought their skills into the lead mines in Cardiganshire in the 17th/18th century. With their skills they would have brought their names. Did these merge with the Welsh names leading to the penchant for biblical names or is this just fiction? I am still searching!

Hi!
This is the second reply I have posted and I'm praying that you see it. My g grandfather was from Onarga, Il which, I believe is in Kankakee county. His name was Hugh Ismael and he married Jeannette (nn BID) Bender. She was his first wife. Did have a line on the second wife, but the person that I e-mailed wouldn't answer my inquiry. Seems that she was from the second marriage. Hugh left and went back to his first wife when he became ill. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks.

My grandfather was son,Clarence Ellsworth and my father was Lewis Ellsworth Ishmiel. If you have any additional information, I'd love to hear it. Sue Ishmiel Kampe

I'm not sure if you are still interested in finding about Benjamin Ishmael. I, too, am interested in Benjamin, as he would be my great-great grandfather. He did marry Mary Louisa Little and they moved to Onarga, IL and had these children that I know of - Hugh Robert (my great grandfather), Wesley, William, Jane and Louisa. I'm not sure who exactly his father was. Still trying to work that out - if you have any information, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks.

Carl,
My name is Carolyn Ishmael Fenton and I am the 3rd great-granddaughter of James Robert Ishmael born 1779 in PA, who is Samuel McFerrin Ishmael's father. Any photos of any of the Ishmael family would be appreciated and I will gladly pay for your services. Some of my cousin's and I went to the Ishmael Chapel in 2005 and enjoy a Sunday service. We got to tour the entire building.
Carolyn Ishmael Fenton
