My name is Willy Istvan. I grew up in southern CA and now live in Everett, WA. My father was Josef Istvan. He was born in 1931 and grew up in Djakovo, Slavonia, Yugoslavia (now located in Croatia). My great-grandfather, Michael Istvan, his brother, Paul Istvan, and his brother Imre Istvan, all three came to America in 1907. Imre and Michael returned to Yugoslavia, but Paul ended up starting a family in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Paul and his family still lived in Perth Amboy in the 1930 census. I have found all of my Istvan ancestors dating back to 1780 when they were living in Hungary. I saw this thread on these Istvan boards and wondered if there might be a connection between our Istvan families. As you might know, Istvan means Steven in Hungarian. It is not a very common last name, even in Hungary (very common given name). There is a possibility that we are connected back in Hungary. Please e-mail me at
