I don't know if I will be any help but my great-grandfather was Alois Istvan. He was the son of a Johann Paul Istvan. This branch of Istvans settled in Akron Ohio. My father remembers going to see an Uncle but I thought he said Chicago. The interesting part of my branch is one of Alois' sons changed his surname to Inman. That could have happened to the family you are looking for. My family was also from Austia-Hungary. Obrovac Batschka. They spoke German and were Roman Catholic.

Well I'm sorry I wasn't very much help for you. I asked my grandmother if my grandfather had ever spoken of any family we had in New Jersey, but said she didn't recall. Nonetheless it was very interesting contacting you and I wish you much luck finding your NJ ancestors!!

Oh, one last thing. My grandmother let me borrow a book she said she sent off for in the mail maybe 12 years ago titled "The World Book of Istvans." There's really not that much useful information, but in the back there is a directory of all Istvans both national and international. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything that yellowpages.com or facebook couldn't find you, but nonetheless I thought it might help you.

It's been very nice discussing our heritage, and if you ever have more questions my email will most likely never change!

Best of luck,
S. Istvan

Thank you so much for your message. I have come across your Maryland Istvan family before. I believe I have your Istvan ancestors in my online database on Rootsweb.com . I am about 99% sure that we are related. My Istvan family was also from Batschka in the Austro-Hungarian Empire; this became Yugoslavia after WWI. I am pretty sure that the father of your great-great-grandfather Johann Istvan, was a Joannes Istvan from Dautova, Batschka, Austria-Hungary Empire. Dautova is now the town of Davod, in Hungary.

Unfortunately, the lost Istvan family I have been searching for lived in New Jersey from 1908 until around 1940 and probably after that. I haven't had any luck finding them.

Hello! I see that you posted this back in 2008 or so, and I hope you still check it!

My name is Sarah Istvan. My father's name is coincidentally Paul Istvan as well, (who also has a brother named Michael, which I thought was interesting). Any way, My grandfather who passed away a few years ago was name James Richard Istvan, and he was born and raised in southern Maryland. His father, Joseph Ignatius Istvan, was my great- grandfather who came by boat I believe before WWII from Yugslavia/Hungary / Austria / German area. I was told by my grandfather that my great-grandfather Joseph spoke German as his first language, so his home country was never really known to our family.

From what I know of my family, Joseph Istvan married Elizabeth Haus, of which they had 3 children. Their son Joseph died as a young man, Elizabeth Theresa Istvan Jones(Betty), and another daughter that not too much is known about.

Elizabeth Haus Istvan died when Betty was just a baby, and the children were cared for my by great-great aunt, THERESA ISTVAN LOTSPECIH. The story my grandfather told me about how his fathers first wife died was that one of the epidemics at the time were running wild, and Joseph and his wife Elizabeth slept for 3 days when the baby was first born, and when Joseph woke up, Elizabeth had passed away. Not sure if it's true, but that's the story we were always told.

Joseph remarried a woman from southern maryland, where most of our family resides and had my grandfather as well as his 5 other brothers and sisters. Most of our family history to this point is known.

The names of Joseph Ignatius Istvan's parents were JOHANN ISTVAN,state of BASCHA, HUNGARY-YUGOSLAVIA and TERASIA FEHN, state of BASCHA, HUNGARY YUGOSLAVIA.

I hope this helps!

My name is Willy Istvan. I grew up in southern CA and now live in Everett, WA. My father was Josef Istvan. He was born in 1931 and grew up in Djakovo, Slavonia, Yugoslavia (now located in Croatia). My great-grandfather, Michael Istvan, his brother, Paul Istvan, and his brother Imre Istvan, all three came to America in 1907. Imre and Michael returned to Yugoslavia, but Paul ended up starting a family in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Paul and his family still lived in Perth Amboy in the 1930 census. I have found all of my Istvan ancestors dating back to 1780 when they were living in Hungary. I saw this thread on these Istvan boards and wondered if there might be a connection between our Istvan families. As you might know, Istvan means Steven in Hungarian. It is not a very common last name, even in Hungary (very common given name). There is a possibility that we are connected back in Hungary. Please e-mail me at wai057@aol.com and let me know how far you all have gotten on your Istvan family tree. Also, if anyone has any information on the family of Paul Istvan, I'd really appreciate it.

Looking for Istvan cousins

I have recently found the passenger records of a Paul Istvan, who moved from Benicanci, Slavonia, Austria-Hungary (now in Croatia) to Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey in 1907. Paul was the brother of my great-grandfather, Michael Istvan. My father has been trying to find this lost branch of my family for 60 years. I have found census records for Paul Istvan in 1910, 1920 and 1930. In 1910 and 1920, Paul listed his last name as Stevens (Istvan means Steven in Hungarian). In 1930, he was listed as Paul Istvan. According to these census records, Paul married Esther Sabol around 1912. They had the following children: Julia Istvan, born abt. 1914; Esther Istvan, born abt. 1916; Frank Istvan, born abt. 1917; Paul Istvan, born abt. 1919; Elizabeth Istvan, born abt. 1922. All five children were born in Perth Amboy, Middlesex, NJ. Keep in mind that any or all of these children could have gone by the surname Stevens/Stephens. I am desperately wanting to make contact with any descendants of this family. Feel free to e-mail me directly at wai057@aol.com .

I'm Phil Costello, one of 13 children, of Ann Agnes Istvan and John Michael Costello.
Ann is the oldest daughter of Joseph Ignatius Istvan (brother of your grandfather, Ignatz Istvan) and Elizabeth Haus (Joseph's first wife who died in 1918 when my mother was four years old). My parents are both living (ages 86, 86) in Chula Vista (Near San Diego) California. All thirteen children are living, mostly in San Diego County.

If you have any additional information about our family tree, or just want to say hi to a distant cousin, I would appreciate it.
