I was born and grew up in Szynwald , Tarnov, Polska. My father is Kazimierz IWAN – he is a son of Peter IWAN from Szynwałd - mother Agnieszka IWAN (Tryba).

I am the only son of John Henry Iwan who was the son of Adolph and Myrtle Worst Iwan. Adolph and Myrtle owned a home on Prairie Avenue also. In addition to John Henry, they had a daughter named Constance who was born in 1911 and then died in 1918 of influenza.

My line is
Paul Iwan - Johann - Ignaz - Augustin
Augustin was my g-grandfather who lived in Karwin (then Austria-Hungary) and later moved to Vienna, Austria, with his family. Karwin today probably is Karvina, Czech Republic.

We are only guessing, that this family originally came from somewhere in Poland. They even in Vienna were connected to a Polish cultural society. One day I'll hopefully get a chance to look through the parish records in Karvina and find out more ...

For sure, there can't be that many Iwans in todays world though.... The name Iwan as a first or a last name is one of the most least popular names in todays world.....

It doesn't look like we are the same Iwan's although somewhere far back we could. Our tree starts in 1765 I think. Anyway if you do a seach on your name in Ancestry it might come up on a tree. There are allot of people who put trees together with distant, distant relatives and you may be surprized.

A little bit yea,

my Iwan tree is pretty Large, it started with My Grandpa (Micheal Iwan) and my grandma (Adeline Iwan) father and mother of My dad Mark Iwan, Tom Iwan, Larry Iwan and Lee Iwan. put about 2-5 cousins each. My dad was born in Ohio along with my uncles and aunt. I myself lived in Ca for a long while NY, and now in CO.... Does this help? I wish I had this one letter in NY that I had but it was from another Iwan sent from Germany on a similar search forgot her name

Do you know any of your family geniology? This Iwan line originates from the two Iwan brothers in Germany/Prussia. They settled in the midwest and texas and eventually some are now in CA. Let me know what info you have.

dear fiona,
in poland near posan,is the small village of the iwan family homestead,we went there.there lived the complete family.brothers sisters etc.the two brothers were blaksmiths
they ran the shop together.untill the time of some items came back to them,damaged.no one knew which brother did the
work.so to compromise,one brother,put the second "n" on thier name.so now the german family spells the name "Iwann"
we saw the blacksmith shop and brought back some horseshoes.
now in the homestead ,lives a lady named "schultz".i will do my best to get a cd made of our trip to the homestead,now it is on the vcr tape.no one dropped the inski off the iwan name.we still have family in erlangen,
and wangen.i am in touch with them often.i want to send you an updated pictuer of us.would you please send me your address?

I just read the portion of the letter from Herbert Iwann that explains the duel. Did you ever find the rest of the letter?

Anyway, just for clarification isn't there two distinct lines of Iwan's? One from Russia/Prussia/Germany that may have been Iwann and one from Poland that was Iwaninski and dropped the "inski"? Or at some point did the two actually become the same one?

NO IVAN THE TERRIBLE AT ALL.ONE OF THE IWAN MEN WAS IN THE COURT OF CATHERINE THE GREAT.HE HAD A DUEL IN PRUSIA
THE KING INSTEAD OF KILLING HIM SENT HIM TO SERVE CATHEREN
THE GREAT.SHE GAVE HIM A NEW NAME,AND SENT HIM HOME 5 YEARS

I will send it to you tomorrow. Caryl is doing just great. It's surprizing. I think she is healthier than most of us. We live about an hour away from her now so we see her often. Mostly on her way to or from a treatment. She said no doctor will determine her death date!!! Since getting back into tracing the Iwan roots, it's amazing to see we all seemed to come from the midwest, mainly Illinois or Kansas or somewhere inbetween. Our oldest son Bret is now an Illustrator for Hallmark Cards and is living in Kansas City and our second oldest Cory is attending college back in our "other" home state of Illinois. Funny how we always end up "home" ! I wish I could get farther back into the Iwan line in Germany or Prussia. There seems to be tales of a relationship to Ivan the Terrible?????

I'm glad to hear that you and John are still doing well. I was just looking at a photo that you had sent us of the two of you, last night. The info I have is from Dorothy herself while she was alive. She had her Daughter Caryl Iwan Plambeck do a Pedigree Chart before she died. Caryl also has photos of Geore Duel Glass and others farther back in the line. I can make a copy and send it to you, or you should be able to see it soon as I am updating the William Douglas Iwan Family Tree on Ancestry.com. I am 100% these are the true relatives and Caryl backs it up. Also, this Dorothy Glass is Dorothy Anna Sarah Glass B: 15 July 1912. Hope it helps.

I hope you're still out there. Yes, my husband is William Douglas Iwan. He is the Grandson of Wilfred August Iwan who was married to Dorothy Glass. However, the records I have show that her parents wer George Duel Glass and Matilda Catherine Walker.

My father is Richard Iwan, his mother is Margaret Iwan who was from poland and came over from poland, my fathers brother and sister are Len Iwan and Marylin Iwan from IL

funny enough I stumble over this board exactly on a day when I have prepared an invitation letter for our IWAN-branch family reunion.

Our Iwan people as far as I know came from Karwin in Moravia, near Ostrava, today Czech Republic, pretty close to the Polish border.

The first Iwan that I know of was a
- Paul Iwan who married a
+ Anna KRZISTEK in 1784. Their only son
- Johann was born in 1786, he married
+ Marianne KRZISTEK probably around 1806. Their son
- Ignaz Iwan was born est. 1807, and married
+ Barbara CHLEBIK in 1811. Their son
- Augustin Iwan, b. 27 Aug 1849 in Karwin, was my g-grandfather.

Unfortunately I don't have a lot more.

I would of course be interested in any information on possible connections or other hints.
