Hallo there,
I am Dutch living in the Netherlands. I am trying to trace our relatives who migrated to the USA. It is known that a Jabaay and his cousin Monster settled in Munster Indiana. The town is calles after that family Monster, which was changed for obvious reasons into Munster. I would like very much to hear from anyone with the name Jabaaij/Jabaay. Maybe I can be of some help in your search for your ancestors. Our family goes back tot 1550 and lived in an area called "The Hoeksche Waard" in Zuid-Holland, The Netherlands.
I am waiting anxiously to hear from any Jabaay.

Jabaais in Iowa

It was interesting that when we moved to Iowa that a number of people called Jabaai instead of Jabaay. I did come in contact with this family and had several visits with Leonard Jabaai from Colfax, Iowa. Leonard told me that his family came to Iowa in the mid 1850's, about the same time my family moved to Munster, Indiana. My family came from the village of Strijen in South Holland and Leonard's family came from the neighboring village of Maasdam in South Holland. Leonard also told me that when his grandfather Jabaai came to this country, his name was originally spelled Jabaay.
It was also interesting that the name Leonard also runs through my family. May grandfather's name was Leonard "Leendert", and my middle name is Leonard.
It was a pleasant surprize to find these Jabaay cousins here in Iowa!

Don Jabaay
djabaay@kdsi.net

Dear Ank,

It was really good to hear from you. For a long time I have wanted to communicate with some of my family in the Netherlands.

My family emigrated from a town in South Holland by the name of Strijen. I am told that there are no Jabaays left in Strijen, but that there are some listed in the S'Gravensdeel telephone book.

My great-grandfather Peter came the the United States in 1854 when he moved to Roseland, which was just south of Chicago, Illinois. Then in 1855 his father Dingaman and his 2 brothers, Leendert, and Arie, homesteaded in Munster, Indiana; where they built a small home and they raised vegetables.

I was raised in Munster, Indiana. My father told me that the town got its name from Munster, who was the town's first postmaster.

There is a lot more about the Jabaay family that I could tell you if you wanted to know more. I would also like to know more about the Jabaays in the Netherlands. I don't know what the name Jabaay means. I am told that the Jabaays were Hugenots who came from France. I have heard that story from other Jabaays that I have met.

I hope to hear from you again.

Don Jabaay
