Many thanks for your reply Helen. It looks like it's not the same William. If the age on the shipping records was correct, your William would have been about 8 years older than my William. Strange that it's 1871 though that he migrated. I found my William, separated from his wife, in the 1871 census, but then no trace of him. His wife was 'head of the household' but still listed as 'married' in 1881. I have found no record of his death in England either.Not too long after 1871 his wife had more children to 'father unknown'. It sure is a mystery that i would dearly love to solve. Do you know where your William was born?
