Tobias Jackman is my 5G Uncle. I descend from his brother, Thomas Jackman. This Thomas Jackman had a son also called Thomas. This Thomas is the father of the legendary Jackmans: William, the Hero and "Viking" Arthur.

Tobias was born in 1781 in Ferryland District. His parents were Arthur Jackman and Catherine Clemins. Tobias was the first born of 7 children.

In 1799-1800 a census was taken in Ferryland District(the Pole Census). Arthur and Catherine are there listed as the parents of a fine crop of boys - Toby, 19, James, 17, Thomas, 14, Philip, 11, Michael, 8 and George, 4 1/2 . If there were other children they had to be born after that census.

All of the children, except for Toby, are listed as 1840 voters and they all lived in the area known as the North Side of Renews, rather than the Mount.

Some of the lives of the sons can be traced through the cemetery headstones in the old cemetery at Renews.

Tobias married a woman named Elizabeth and then the trail goes cold. [This maybe where Tobias went to MA or RI as later generations went there].

There is this notation in the "Royal Gazette" St John's newspaper articles of the Ferryland District Early 1800's:

January 2, 1812
Jackman, Tobias
Renews, planter. Administrator James Jackman.

Tobias Jackman appears as a debtor in the 1838-39 ledger books of the Goodridge firm. (PANL P7/A/29)

In 1866 a Tobias and a John Jackman were among those who obtained grants of land in Renews:

Serial #2465
Jackman, John
East of Renews Harbour
1866

Serial #2313
Jackman, Tobias
East of Renews Harbour
1866

I am almost ready to post a new website about my ancestors and the Ferryland communities. Stay tuned.

Hope this has been helpful.

BILL DORGAN

Dear Marshadrover,

Is it possible that there was a Tobias in your family? Without any tangible reason why, I might say in the mid-1800's up until 1900? Did any of your ancestors migrate to the US, either Massachusetts or Rhode Island? Any help would be most appreciated.

Sincerely,
LB

The reason I know is very simple - my own grandfather was known by both names, as was his brother and his father.

What is more interesting is your Peter below. Are you ready for this?s ....... I'm sure he's from my line as I have a Peter who was born around 1900 to Patrick Chapman and Mary Furlong (his first of three wives). I have other information on his early life but none on his later life although I feel he and his brother Patrick may have moved to New York.

I'd love to chat offline if you'd like to pass on your email address. I can even take you back four or five generations from your Peter. Where are you?

Eileen (Sydney, but from Wexford)

I don't know if you will read this, but I am now looking up my grandfather.
He was Peter Paul Chapman, but his birth certificate says Peter JACKMAN (born 1900, son of Mary Furlong and Patrick Chapman/Jackman). I did not know, until reading this, that Jackman and Chapman were interchageable. Do you have information on that? I am trying to get my Irish citizenship and I want to show them that the names are interchangeable.

I probably got it on my computer at home, but have been traveling since May 25th. I do have my laptop with me, so I'm sure the will came in after we left home. Thank you so much for sending it to me, and I apologize for not knowing about it till now. We hope to be home the 2nd week of August and I will check my home computer for it.

Do you know the name of Hester's mother? We are my cousin's house in Oregon, but I did find some info on the Wright's while we were in Salt Lake City. Don't have it right here handy, but will check it and get back to you. How much research have you done on Hester and her father?

Thanks again for getting back to me.

Jo Ann

DAR proof states that Hester Lee Wright married Thomas Jackman,Sr. He was born ca 1707 in VA and died before Mar 25, 1782 at Fauquier Co., VA. Hester died after Mar 15, 1776 in same county of VA. They married before 1759 in VA. No one joining DAR has found Hester's birth date or place of birth.

I am trying to find out if Hester's father was Joseph Lee Wright and who he married. I need proof of this along with his birth, marriage and death dates.

Would appreciate it if you have Hester's mother's name and what proof you have that she is the daughter of Joseph Wright.

You can email me at:
cummins0745@sbcglobal.net

Hi, I know its been a number of years since I wrote last. Regarding this Frank Jackman related to you. Does your mother know about what year approx he went to California or approx how old he was. The Frank Jackman I am looking for supposedly was a tile setter by trade and worked in and around Pasadena / Los Angeles in the 1930'S. Frank Jackman was approx 30yrs old in 1937, was married with children. Son's for sure not sure if any daughters. Richard Thompson is my father and he was also one of frank Jackmans sons but they were not aware of my fathers existance. My dad was born out of an affair Frank Jackman was having with my dads birth mother named Elsie Irene Ketchum. I would love to be able to find any living relations to that part of the Jackman family.

As I make entries on Ancestry.com, sometimes, it brings up records. So far, I've seen nothing as to Hester's Mother, though.
I would be interested in what you found in Salt Lake.

Richard Jackman and Ellen Jane Fergus Jackman are my great-great-grandparents. They were both born in Kentucky in approximately 1816 and 1825, respectively. Ellen Jane Fergus Jackman was deceased prior to the 1880 Census and Richard Jackman was living in Arkansas with his son (my great-grandfather) John Crittenden Jackman, also a widower in 1880, and John's three year-old daughter, Minnie Etta Jackman. I do not know the parents of either Richard Jackman or Ellen Jane Jackman, nee Fergus. If you have any information on any of these persons, I would appreciate your contacting me. Thank you.
