The Jackses were seated nobility in the North Riding of Yorkshire in England since the 14Th century. Their manor was in the village of Nether Silton close to the Scottish border. Where they came from before is unknown except there is an Jacks Mountain near what was Colbar Prussia. Jacques is the French pronunciation of Jacks. It is believed in my family that the original ancestors came from Israel since the name literally means "Son of Jacob". This is supposition on our part.

I have seen somewhere on this site that Jone Jacks was a younger son that went to sea and was shipwrecked off the Hebrides Islands. He then sold himself into indentured servitude to pay his passage to America. My computer crashed last year and I lost lots of documentation.

I wonder if he spelled his name Jacques and changed it to Jacks when he got to America. It would make sense because no one can find information on his family. Also, could someone that came with him spell his name Jacques?

No, Sorry! All I know about him was that he came into this country as an indentured servant after being shipwreckwed. His passage was paid by Richard Halleyrand of Baltimore, Maryland, a shipbuilder. After serving his contract he started shipbuilding for himself. He date I have for him entering the USA was about 1670.

Hi, I am Becki Jacks Burchfield. The Jacks Family that I belong to (decendants of Jone Jacks) were English. The first recorded mention of the Jacks name was in the 15th century. They had a seated manor in the North Riding of Yorkshire County close to the Scottish border; a little village named Nether Silton.

I will check my tree and see if your grandma is in it.

Ivan and Solomon Jacks who married Macomber sisters

Hi everyone,

I am trying to resolve the question "Who were the parents of Ivan and Solomon Jacks who married, respectively, Alethia Ann (Alethiana) and Levina Macomber?"

Ivan (frequently misidentified as Irwin and Evan) was born about 1809, possibly Nov. 1809. One census says "born Ohio" but his son Levi said he was born in "ole Caroline". He arrived with his brother Solomon in Gallia County Ohio in about 1828. He married Alethia Ann Macomber (sometimes spelled Macumber, but it is NOT McCumber/McUmber/McOmber, pronounced like "may-comer or may-comber") on 24 Sep 1829 in Gallia Co., OH. Alethia Ann (Alethiann) Macomber was born 21 Sep 1811 in Ohio. Her father is Alexander W. Macomber (whose name was changed to Macumber to match it up with a land deed spelling of the name.) Alexander is a descendant of William Macomber, the original immigrant, and also a descendant of Francis Cooke and Richard Warren, Mayflower passengers and signers of the Mayflower Compact, and John Cooke, son of Francis who married the daughter of Richard Warren (she arrived on the "Ann".) Ivan died in 1852 in what is now Wilkesville, Vinton Co., Ohio. Ivan was a farmer.

Solomon Jacks, brother of Ivan, was born 15 Jan 1811 and died 20 Sep 1877 in Centerville (near Athena) Umatilla Co., Oregon. A marble stone was carved about 1892 and placed on the grave which is in the old Keys Cemetery near Athena Oregon by James Solomon Jacks. This stone has long ago been broken and there is a newer granite plaque next to it with Solomon's name and dates.

Solomon married Levina Macomber, sister of the above Alethia Ann, 29 Jul 1830 in Gallia Co., OH. She was born 11 Nov 1813 in Ohio. The sisters are from a family of 12 with 8 surviving daughters and 2 surviving sons, twin boys dying in infancy. As a family note, it was Solomon who originally dated Alethia Ann, but soon she was going with his brother Ivan and they married, Solomon dating and marrying her sister Levina. There seemed to be no problem from this turn of events as the couples are living near each other in 1830. Alexander gave each daughter $30. when she married. Solomon did some farming, but he became a doctor and preacher, practicing both occupations for many years.

Alexander Macomber/Macumber died in Oct 1831 and the Jacks' brothers took over his farm and took care of the rest of the siblings who were as yet unmarried. Esther Macomber, wife of Alexander, was also still living.

Levina died in 1851. With both Ivan and Levina dead, Solomon married Alethia Ann in March of 1853 in Lawrence Co., OH.

It has been suggested that Solomon Jacks (son of Richard Jacks and Mary Sparks or possibly Mary Prock Brinegar) and Martha "Patsy/Patsey" Gentry are the parents of Ivan and Solomon. While it is possible that they could have had these children as far as dates go, there are NO SONS listed in the census of 1810 or 1820 of Surry Co., NC for this couple.

Job Jacks, brother of Solomon (paragraph above) who married Susannah "Sucky" Vanhoy is another possibility, as is their brother Richard. I have been unable to find documented lists of these couples' children.

Can anyone help?

I am open to suggestions.

Gratefully yours,

Sharon Lemkuil
Daughter of a Jacks daughter and documented descendant of Solomon Jacks and Levina Macomber
Do you mean 1643? Jone Jacks, Richard, and Thomas Jacks are all in my lineage. I have run up on the same problem. However I have discovered that the first mention of the name Jacks was in the Yorkshire region of England in a small village called Nether Silton. I have a friend who lives in England researching it.

Jim, isn't it time we worked on this brick wall? Paulette Guthrie gave me youor name and I have been trying to reach you. I know you live in olde Virginia and commute into DC each day, so are very busy. I am descended from William and Member/Memory Moran/Morning/Mournen/Mooren etc, through their son, James Madison Moran, who made quite a success of himself in Fort Hill, Loudon District, Kanawha County WV. You know, out of all my genealogy, this is the only real brick wall I have. I have every single one of my ancestors back to immigration that I have found so far--many Puritans in MA, then to Ohio and on to Charleston, many Germans who came to VA via Philly, and many Scots and Irish who came directly into VA, but this William and Member I can't solve. I figure there were real problems with this family since I have the wife, at age 58, in the 1880 Kanawha County, Loudon District, WV Census as "hired" and "works in family" at the home of Charity and JF Daddon, lumber merchant. I rather think she was related to Member/Memory's daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Caldwell. William married the Stewart woman who lived next door and had two daughters with him. I can't find a marriage record for William and Memory/Member, nor can I find a divorce record in Kanawha or Boone Counties. I have seen a lot of other marriage records for their chidlren, though. Why don't we work on this together?

Samuel Morning

I am descended from James Madison MORAN whose parents were William and Memory (NMN)Mornen and names like that. I know that their first two children were born in Fayette County before it split the southern half of it into Raleigh County. Can you tell me how far back you have right now? I have this family in 1850 (newly created) Raleigh County VA (now WV) Census, 1860 Wyoming County, Oceana, VA (Now WV) Census, 1850 (newly created) Raleigh County VA (now WV) Census, 1870 Boone County Scott District WV Census and then Memory (AKA Member) in the 1880 Kanawha County, WV Loudon District Census.

In the first Raleigh County, VA Census, they are family number 39, William's name is spelled MOOREN and he is 26 year old farmer. His wife's name is Mimber or Member, who is 24. Their first three children had been born and they are Ellen, 6, John W or B (can't read the writing) who is 3 and Madison (my second great-grandfather) who is 4 months old. All these children were born in Fayette County which southern portion had just been taken to create Raleigh County, VA, now WV. This marriage would have normall taken place when William was about 19 and Member/Mimber was about 17. I would love to break through this brick wall which has been bothering me for years. I am very interested in talking to Truck Morning to see what he has available on this family. I am sure they are all related.

Spelling was quite optional, especially in the Pioneer Days of what is now WV. The Census takers often spelled the names they heard phonetically. Thus, we have the various spellings of Moran in the 1960 Wyoming County, VA Census, Mournen in the 1870 Boone County Census, Moran in the 1880 Census when referring to their son, James Madison MORAN, but Member/Memory is living with Charity CALDWELL Hawks Daddon and the name has morophed to Mourning. Since she was illiterate asking her how to spell her name would have been futile.

I have some information which says that the patriarch of this particular family was born in Bedford County, VA. It would be very interesting to see if we could come up with some ancestors there, wouldn't it? That is still a very small population county in VA to this day.

Jack or Jacks family

Hello all, I am trying to research my husbands family on his father's side. His father was Lawrence Jacks married Wilma J. Williams. Lawrence's father was Edd Jacks or full name might be Charles Edgar Jack or Jacks. I am unsure of the correctness of the last name. I believe Edd's parents were Thomas Jacks and Sallie Sexton. I do not have any further names than that. I have it written on a child's death certificate that Tom and Sallie's birth area is Knox County, Tennessee. Tom was born approx. 1866 and Sallie was around 1871 or 1873. Sallie applied to the Cherokee nation in 1906, but was denied. Sallie's mother or grandmother was Nancy Lambert. That is all of the info. that I have. Any help or corrections on any dates, places, time frames, etc is most appreciated and welcomed. Would love to know Tom and Sallie's parents. Thank you in advance.

A photo of the Nicholas Marion Jacks headstone is on my James L. Cooper Family Tree on Ancestry.com. It was provided to me by Sherry Jacks Davis, a cousin who is also researching this line. I have not been there to see it, but my father has. As I recall the description, the location is not really a cemetery as we think of it, but rather just this broken stone laying flat on the ground.

Hi Sheri,
My name is Susan Colleen Dennis, I am an Alabama native and my greatgrandmother (paternal) was Luzie(Terrell)Jacks. I do not have any other informatation other than she lived in Coosa County Alabama and died in 1959 at age 73. She was very petite, dark hair and eyes with olive skin. ( I have one picture of her)
Could we be descendants of Jone Jacks (his son David is listed as being in Alabama on your information)
I am trying to trace my family of origin,my father died at 47 and my grandparents died when I was a teenager. I did not think to ask these questions when I was younger and now there are no "old timers" left.
Can you help me to find out more about the Jacks family? Maybe we are related....please contact me at s_stevenson1959@yahoo.com or call me at 904-294-4286.
Thanks

Hello,
Can you please read my reply and see if I am also a descendant of Jone Jacks? My great grandmother is Luzie Jacks and married Willim Terrell. They both grew up in Coosa County Alabama.
What country of origin are we from? I was told that the name Jacks is of American Indian decent and then heard it has an Italian origin????
Please share any information, website or book where I can find out more. Thanks,

Just found this website....I am a descendant of Luzie Jacks of Coosa County, Alabama. She was born in the early 1800's and was my greatgrandmother. She died in 1959 and was married to William Terrell, also of Coosa County, Alabama. She had 4 children, Hattie Mae Terrell (my grandmother) Eunice Burkhalter, Marvin Terrell and one other daughter who died at one year of age. I have one picture of Luzie and she has black hair, strong cheekbones, dark eyes, petite (about 5'1") maybe 110 lbs.
She appears to be of Indian descent or Italian?????? hard to tell as she has very distinct features. My mother is still living and only knew her briefly when she married my dad. (He died at age 47). Mom says she was a small woman and very gentle and sweet.
I would love to know more about this family so if you can help, please contact me at s_stevenson1959@yahoo.com or call me at 904-294-4286.
If you are looking for info on Nicholas Marion Jacks, Jr., I am not showing that he had a brother named Wm. Martin. They would have been cousins. There is another Nicholas Jacks that had a brother named Wm. Martin (died of disease during the civil war), but these two brothers are my 2 of my g/g/g grandfather's sons. They lived in Miss. I have no record of any of Nicholas Marion's children.

As Jone Jacks is concerned, this is where my and your Jacks line came from. He came over as an indentured servant in 1667. He settled in Anne Arundel Co. Maryland. He married Mary Agnes Coffley, and they had one son Thomas Jacks who married Elizabeth Huett in 1704 in All Hallows Church in Arundel Co.

I have just the past couple of weeks decided to try to find out where Jone Jacks was buried, born, what ship he came over on. If you have any suggestions as where to start, it would be greatly appreciated.

Amanda

I have some information about my family that I can track back to my great, great, great, great grandfather down to me.
Richard M. Jacks - Sophia(Barnes)Jacks
From Virginia to Kentucky to Howard Co., Mo. and then Platt Co., Mo.
Parents to Elias Barnes Jacks who married Polly (Warden)Jacks then moved to Howard County, Mo. and Then to Platt County, Mo. where they lived until the Civil War and then moved to Wyandotte County, Ks.
They Had 8 children one of whom was:
Warden Thomas Jacks , born 4/14/1835 and married Mary V.(Rogers)Jacks on December 15, 1864. He was a confederate soldier who fought at the Battle of Pea Ridge in Arkansas.
One of thier children was my great grandfather:
Richard Elias Jacks
I dont remember much about him yet but am finding out more from family soon. I know my grandfather was his only son and he had several daughters. The names I remember are Nettie, Jewel and Lina.
My grandfather was William Thomas Jacks, Sr. married to Jessie Mae Benson from Minnesota.
My father is William Thomas Jacks, Jr. who married Nellie Marie Shore both from Wyandotte County, Ks. They have 2 sons and 4 daughters, Kathleen, Fredrick, Judith, Elizabeth, Jennifer and Jeffrey. My father passed away in 1995.

I just started investigating this 2 days ago so I am new at this.
I read your post and it sounds like we have some of the same relatives. I hope this helps you and I would love to hear back from you.
The information I have is from historical book for Wyandotte County early settlers.
