The Heyday of Onton
By Louise P. Fleming - 1984

Dr. Peter
Jackson is mentioned in Scharff's History of
Delaware.
He appears to have been an enterprising landowner and farmer as well as a doctor.
It was mentioned that at one time he planted a large orchard of peach trees for the purpose
of making brandy. This seems to have been one of the ideas that was prevalent at the time!

Notes for MARY
Rust,2ND WIFE:
************
After the death of his father, Dr. Peter
Jackson,his mother, Mary
Rust,married Thomas Carlisle.
When he was four years old, his mother and stepfather left him with her sister,Elizabeth and her husband, Major George Gresham, while they went on a trip, apparently looking for a new location.
Thomas Carlisle and Molly
Rust Jackson Carlisle finally settled in
Kentucky after spending some time in Tennessee.
In the meantime,Charles King
Jackson, remained in the care of his aunt and uncle.
Major Gresham distinguished himself in the Revolutionary War and in the War of 1812.
He made his residence in Lewes,
Delaware and Charles K. told his grandson, Jasper Mayhew
Jackson, of standing on the beach at Rehoboth Bay and throwing stones in the ocean.
Charles K. came to
Kentucky after he was grown to visit his mother and had one leg over his saddle in preparation to return to
Delaware when he decided to stay in
Kentucky.....
Two of his stepbrothers are said to have accompanied him to pick up his belongings in DE and bring them back by oxcart......
He was a successful farmer, one time Justice of the Peace and a well respected citizen....
