-lived with his wife Hannah Gibson in Stokes Co., NC9
-According to Samuel Jackson's Rev War pension application, his wife's name was Hannah Gibson and his children are all named. According to my Grandmother, who would be 122 years old (she did live til 94), the Jacksons were from Northern Ireland, Antrim County, near Larne, but she didn't know when the family had arrived in the colonies.10
-lived near the Toms Creek Quaker Meeting House (today's community of Westfield, NC)2
-(today's community of Westfield, NC6) Surry/Stokes Co.,NC ( county lines changed and the residence became Surry, then Stokes)10
-Samuel's Revolutionary War pension file (copy is in Samuel’s file in my house11) is from General Services Administration-"Pension Claim W5004-15 Mar 1833-Certificate number 5.228" -this is the transcription from a microfilm copy of the original record of the apprearance in court of Samuel Jackson. "Samuel Jackson states that he was born in 1758 south of Philadelphia on the Delaware River. His parents are not named. He says that he moved with his family as a small child to Rowan County, NC, and settled in the area which later became Davidson County. That since the Revolution he has lived in the County of Surrey, North Carolina, and states he farmed on the Dan River, now Stokes County, at other times Rowan County. That since the Revolution he has lived in the County of Stokes, and lives there now, that he first served in a company commanded by Captain Joseph Cloud in the County of Stokes, then called Surry County, in the year 1780 for a term of 1 month as a voluntary and white P (person) in the services appointed to guard Tory prisoners at Old Town Bethabara. Afterward, but in the year 1780 at the same place, served under Capt. Gaines, father of General Gaines, served and was employed guarding British prisoners taken at the Battle of King's Mountain and to wit at least one, Fincastle. Afterwards in the same and succeeding years was engaged and acted on several scouting parties under different officers whos names from informity he can not now recollect. That while engaged in the service before mentioned, the regiment to which his company was attached was commanded part of the time by Col. William Sheppard and Major Joseph Winston. He recollects that while on duty at Old Town, Eiler (sp), a private soldier, shot a Sargeant Smith, for which offense he was merely whipped. Afterward just in the year 1781 in the County of Rowan above ___? the British marched from South Carolina toward the Battle Ground at Guilford, he volunteered his services in a company of militia commanded by Capt. William Davis, which company was chiefly callled out at that crisis to keep the Tories on run and harass them, when he was taken prisoner by the Tories and after they camped awhile was discharged; that this service and imprisonment lasted about one month. Shortly after this and in the year 1781 he volunteered service again in a company of mounted light infantry commanded by Capt. Lapp, Lt. Bodenhamer, and marched toward, he believes, Wilmington, North Carolina. From there marched to near the mouth of the Cape Fear River where they made an attack on the Brick (?) House occupied by a British garrison and then marched towrd James Town in South Carolina, then back to the Brick (?) House and lay in the neighborhood watch. The news arrived that Cornwallis was taken, whence we was marched home. He was discharged having served three months. The regiment in which his company marched to Wilmington was commanded by Col. Smith; that he recollects there was along a company of horsemen from the County of Guilford of 30 or more commanded by Capt. Gillespie; recollects that one, Capt. Kermly (sp ?) was along with the company. This regiment numbered about 500 men. He recollects that in the affair at Raft Swamp, one, McDoo of the Guilford troops was shot on the front guard in the march by the Tories. He don't recollect that in any part of his service he was under the command of any regular officer or in company with regular troops. He states that at each time his different tours of service was up he was discharged in writing-at which---? He states that taking his tours of service together------? that he always served as a private and never received a commission. He states that he has no documentary evidence of his service and knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service, except the testimony of Private Jacob Idol, whose affidavit is here appended and who testifies for him as to the point served under Capt. Davis and Capt. Lapp, and whereafter he states that in his neighborhood he is known to Charles Banner and Jacob Carson who can testify as to his character for veracity and to their belief of this services at the time of the Revolution. (Note: The declaration is signed Samuel Jackson by the clerk of the court with the notation by mark, or his mark. There mark is placed between the first and last name) A sample of the script from the document on microfilm is on this paper in my file also11
-Samuel was illiterate according to Hannah's application for widow's pension as was she. Married by Justice of the Peace Micajah Clark, in Surry Co., NC10
-date of birth from Quaker records, married by a Baptist minister, Samuel was kicked out of the Quaker Society. I believe that Samuel was born a few miles from the city of Philadelphia on the river Deleware. When he was around three or four years of age his parents moved to Rowan County,(that became Davidson Co.6) NC, the part that became Davidson County, NC. The Westfield, NC monthly meeting (Tom's Creek Quaker Meeting House6) was established in 1772 and Jacob, John, Curtis and Samuel Jackson Jr. were all charter members.7
-information in file on the old homestead visited by this source6
-Samuel,Jr. dismissed from the Quakers for his war-like activities and for marrying Hannah. There is no mention of him in Quaker records after he married Hannah, and I do not think that his children were Quakers as I understand that most of the boys married Quaker girls and they were dismissed from the Church.9
-source shows a birthplace as Philadelphia, PA and a deathdate as 6 Jun 1834.
Samuel enlisted and served at various times in 1780 and 1781 as a private under Captain William David in Col. Smith’s Regiment. He was captured by the Tories during this time but soon released and discharged after the surrender of Cornwallis. Samuel was disowned from the Westfield Monthly Meeting for marrying out of unity, that is marrying a non-Quaker. Samuel was granted a pension of $20.00 per year on his application which was executed in Stokes Co., NC on March 15 1833. Information on Samuel and Hannah can be found in the Revolutionary War Record, Claim #W5000004, filed in the Archives in Raleigh, NC. This information was taken from the JACKSON FAMILY, prepared by Jo Martin. Source says that “ the North Carolina Jacksons were also owners of large numbers of slaves. Of 1746 slaves recorded in Stokes County in 1810, something above 1170 belonged to members of the JACKSON family.
from THE JACKSON FAMILY OF STOKES COUNTY by Alice Tucker:”The JACKSON family was originally from Devonshire, England, and up until about 1918, the American branch of the Jackson family retianed active ties with members of the fmily still in England. The first of the Devonshire JACKSON, landed at Jamestown, VA in 1625 and moved almost immediately to Williamsburg, VA with his family. Descendents of this family lived in Westmoreland Co., Va and remianed there until probably the mid 1700’s, when the JACKSONS, together with some 160 slaves, came to Stokes County, NC and established a plantation on a land grant from King George I or II of England.
The grant was quite large, one supposely included some 30,000 acres (figure of 8,000 and 5,000 have been quoted). The plantation was located in now Stokes County with the tract of land extended extending northward into Patrick Co., VA. It is probable that at least a part of the original grant included lands of Jacksons near Westfield near the Stokes-Surry Co., NC lines. This estate if known to have included at sometime a tannery. It is interesting to note that Joseph H. JACKSON (born 1801) said that the first money he ever earned was in a tannery on his father’s plantation. It is also known that a school was established on the plantation and a teacher brought from the East. The neighbors children were also invited to attend. The North Carolina JACKSONS were also owners of large numbers of slaves. Of 1746 slaves recoded in Stokes County, NC in 1810, something above 1170 belonged to members of the JACKSON family.
Joseph H. JACKSON’s father (this Samuel) freed all of his slaves a number of years prior to the Civil War. From 1625 through the years on the plantation in Stokes County the Jacksons made frequent trips back to visit their relatives in England. At different times relatives from England came to visit the Jacksons in America. Joseph H. (Samuel’s son) is known to have gone back to visit relatives and to buy furniture for their home. In 1814, 1816 and 1817 the first Jacksons migrated westward. Joseph H. Jackson left his father’s plantation in Stokes County with a cash gift of one thousand dollars from his parents, a good saddle horse and a new suit of clothes, all as his coming of age gift. It was the will of his stern father that all his sons settle in non-slave states, and to that end he sent each, as he became of age, north, Joseph H. soon married Phoebe COX. A number of years after leaving Stokes County, Joseph H. returned to the plantation for their younger sister who was sixteen years old and took her out to Indiana with them. The parents, however, remained on the plantation where they later died.” (this was taken from an article by Alice Tucker)”12

-Samuel Jackson Jr. was a Revolutionary soldier and is believed to be a son of Samuel, though this has not been proven. In his application for pension, he stated that he was born in 1758 in PA, near the Delaware river, about five miles south of the city of Philadelphia. He said that when a small lad, his parents moved to North Carolina, and they settled in Rowan Co, which later became Davidson Co.18
-”born in Northern Ireland and emigrated to Stokes Co., NC where he married Rebecca HOLDEN. They became the parents of a large family of children of whom a younger son Samuel was born in 1796 in the old North state, and when quite a young man came West to Mongomery Co.,OH where he was married to Jemima, daughter of William COX.” 19
-source has information on Samuel and Rebecca’s other children 20
-could this be the Samuel JACKSON (my #3028) who may have also married 2nd Hannah GIBSON?11
-According to my Grandmother, who would be 122 years old (she did live til 94), the Jacksons were from Northern Ireland, Antrim County, near Larne, but she didn't know when the family had arrived in the colonies.10
-Your previous correspondence did not give a birth date for you
ggg-grandfather, Samuel Jackson. If he was born in 1792 then he could not
be the son of Catherine Plankinhorn. Catherine died on 4/24/1780. Even if
she was alive it would have been highly unlikely (if not impossible) that
she would have had a child as late as 1792 since her first child was born
in 1761. If your Samuel was a descendant of Samuel and Catherine, it would
probably have been as a grandson instead of son.
Another possibility is that Samuel Jackson remarried following Catherine's
death. If that is the case, then he could have married Rebecca Holden if
there marriage took place after 1780. A Samuel Jackson was disowned from
New Garden Meeting on 12/27/1783 for "marriage out of unity." This means
that a Samuel Jackson had a non-Quaker wedding and there is no additional
information in the Quaker records. There is nothing to identify the
Samuel, so I cannot prove that the Samuel that married in 1783 is the same
as the Samuel who married Rachel Holden or even the same that was married
to Catherine Plankinhorn. There could be three different Samuel's being
discussed or only one. There is no way to tell from the files or the
records.
There is no additional information in our records or files to assist you in
identifying the correct individual. The Holden surname does not appear in
North Carolina Quaker records so I cannot add any information about Rachel
Holden. 21
-After researching the family of Samuel Jackson, who married Catherine Plankinhorn, for more than six years, I now believe that if his parents are ever found, they will be among the many Jackson families that settled on the eastern shores of Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey, not from the Quaker Jacksons of Pennsylvania.
Many Jackson researchers over the years have written articles on who they believe to be Samuel's parents, some which I am including.
The descendants of Samuel and Catherine who are now living in the Westfield area will tell you that his father was one Aaron Jackson, son of William, born Feb. 25, 1725 in Pasquotank, NC. This information was taken from a research done by Luther Byrd of Westfield, and can be found in the Guilford College Library.
Mr. Luther N. Byrd, grew up in Mt. Airy, NC and while a teacher of the Westfield High School, became interested in the history of the early Quakers that had settled in that area. He started his students working on family trees, and in order to help the students he did genealogical research himself. In his research on the Jacksons, he gives the name of Aaron Jackson, son of a William Jackson as the father of, Samuel, and Priscilla Jackson Jessup as a sister of Samuel.
Aaron Jackson of Pasquotank Co, NC did have a son by the name of Samuel and a brother named Samuel. He also had a daughter Priscilla, who became the wife of Joseph Jessup. This couple moved in the New Garden Area of Guilford Co and made the move from Guilford to the Westfield community around the same time that Samuel with his family moved from Rowan Co to the Westfield Area. Two of Samuel's sons, William and Joseph married the daughters of Priscilla and Joseph Jessup, Mary and Sarah Jessup. Thus becoming the first two marriages between the Jessup and the Jacksons.
Samuel Jackson's birth is estimated to be ca. 1720-25 as his eldest son was born in 1747. Aaron Jackson of Pasquotank Co, NC was born in 1725, so the two men would be around the same age and could not be father and son. These Pasquotank Jacksons were descendants of Samuel Jackson of Maryland and some of the names are the same names found in the Jackson settlement. If there should be any truth in this statement, would mean that Samuel Jackson, brother of Aaron, went back to PA before he moved to North Carolina, and therefore could have been the uncle of Priscilla Jackson Jessup, and not her brother.
Professor Edwin P. West, great-grandson of Jacob and Ann Jackson, gave an account which was used in the History of Clinton Co, OH. This article had been written earlier by Judge Harlan on “Sketches of Clinton Co”, which stated that three brothers Jacob, John, and Samuel Jackson were among the first settlers of Clinton Co and that their father was Samuel Jackson who was the son of Isaac Jackson, who was the son of Anthony Jackson, who was a descendant of Ralph Jackson who was burned at the stake as a martyr at Stratford, England in 1556. He also stated that Samuel was probably a first cousin and intimate friend of President Andrew Jackson.
I have found many discrepancies in this article. First, the Isaac Jackson, son of Anthony Jackson, married Ann Evans, and brought his family to America in 1725 when he was sixty years of age and settled in Chester Co, PA. His life has been well documented in Quaker records and Pennsylvania histories. They did not have a son by the name of Samuel, so Samuel Jackson was not the son of Isaac and Ann Evans Jackson.
The brother Samuel that he speaks of is believed to be the son of Jacob and not his brother. Jacob had a son named Samuel born in Surry Co, NC in 1774 and would have been old enough to be the Samuel that Professor West wrote about.
He stated that Samuel was probably an intimate friend and first cousin of President Andrew Jackson. Records show that Andrew Jackson received his license to practice law in Surry Co at the old Richmond court house (now gone) which was located on the banks of the Yadkin River, just below where Samuel and his family lived. It is possible that they did become friends with Andrew. From information that has been handed down, it is apparent they never liked Andrew, and could not believe that it was the Andy Jackson they knew who had been elected President of the United States, as he was such a rough character, always getting into brawls, fighting, gambling, etc.
Samuel Jackson was around forty-five years old when Andrew Jackson was born, and had been in America for several years before Andrew Jackson Sr. came to America and settled at Waxhaw. Andrew Sr. did have a brother named Samuel, "Called Sam the Sailor" and as the story goes was instrumental in getting the Jackson and Hutchins family out of Ireland and to America.
If there is any relationship between Samuel Jackson of Westfield and Andrew Jackson, it would be way back in England or Ireland where they may have had a common ancestor, as I can find no close connection between these two families in America.22
-I suspect that Samuel and Rebecca really married somewhere else, as the area that
eventually became Stokes County wasn't settled prior to about 1750. Most
settlers came into this area from the north - Virginia, Maryland,
Pennsylvania mostly - so you're probably going to want to look to those
places for a marriage record if one exists. Stokes Co. itself wasn't
formed until 1789. Although sometimes people write one for the other in public documents, they
really are different families, and unfortunately I don't know much about
the Holdens, just the Holders. I checked my files, however, for a marriage
between a Jackson and a Holder, and didn't find one, nor do I have a
Rebecca Holder in my files before the 19th century.
I do find two Samuel Jacksons in the 1790 Stokes County census, however:
4 males over 16, 1 male under 16, 1 female
1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, 3 females
I suppose these could be your father and son?
Have you looked in the later census records to establish when they moved
out of NC?
Also, I don't see any Holdens in Stokes or adjacent counties in 1790. If
Rebecca's family was living there at that time, then they were probably
Holders rather than Holdens. But if Samuel married Rebecca in Virginia or
elsewhere as early as 1744, then her family wouldn't necessarily be in
Stokes Co. with them anyway.23
-source shows that “Samuel was born in Northern Ireland and emigrated to Stokes Co., NC where he was married about the year 1774 to Rebecca HOLDEN”24
-Samuel Jackson, Jr. was disowned from the Westfield Friends Church due to marrying "out of unity." He enlisted and served at various times in 1780 and 1781 as a private under Captain William David in Col. Smith's Regiment. He was captured by the Tories during this time, but soon released and discharged after the surrender of Cornwallis. He was granted a pension of $20.00 per year on his application which was executed in Stokes Co., NC on 15 Mar 1833.
The early census records use the names Samuel Jackson, Sr. and Samuel Jackson, Jr, and Samuel Jr., gave almost the same information in his request for pension that Jacob Jackson gave on his "Testimony." He stated he was born in Chester Co., PA and that his parents moved to Rowan Co., NC when he was around 12 years old.
When his parents, Samuel and Catherine Jackson moved to Tom's Creek, their land was in Surry Co., but when Stokes County was formed in 1789, the line was drawn at Westfield and Samuel Jackson, Sr. found his land had been divided by the county line. Samuel Jackson, Jr.'s land was in Stokes Co. NC.
On the 15th day of March and AD, 1832, personally appeared in open court before the Justice of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, for the County of Stokes:
Samuel Jackson, a resident of NC and the county of Stokes, aged about 74 years, who being first duly sworn in according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of an act of Congress passed 7 Jun 1832. That he entered the service of the US under the following named officers, and served at known stations. He states first that he was born in the year 1758 in the state of PA a few miles from the City of Philadelphia, on the Delaware River. That he has no record of his age, that when quite young he moved with his parents to that part of County Rowan in the state of NC that is now called Davidson Co. He states that when he was first called into service he lived in the county of Surry and that aforesaid was on Dan River now in Stokes Co. At other times in County of Rowan, that since the Revolutionary War he has lived in the county of Stokes, and lives there now. That he first served in a Company commanded by Captain Joseph Cloud of the county of Stokes, then Surry, in the year of 1780 for a term of four months. Then he volunteered and was put in service and appointed to guard Tory prisoners, at Old Town in Bethabara. That afterwards in the year of 1780, and the second place he served under Captain Gaines, father of General Gains, and he said that he was employed in guarding British soldiers taken prisoners at the Battle of Kings Mountain, and served for one month. Afterwards in the same and succeeding years he was engaged and sent on several scouting parties. In all for a term of one month under different officers, whose names he cannot now remember. That when engaged in the service mentioned the assignment ot which his company was attached was commanded part of the time by Col. William Sheppard and Major Joseph Winston. He recollects while on duty at Old Town a private soldier shot a Sgt. Smith for which offense he was merely whipped. Afterwards, I think, in the year 1782, in the county of Rowan, about the time the British marched south toward the Battleground of Guilford, he volunteered his services in a company of militia commanded by Captain William Davis. In which company was chiefly called out to hunt Tories and obtain them. He was taken prisoner by the Tories and after being confined a while was released, and services and complacement lasted about one month. Shortly after this, in the same year of 1782, he entered service again in a company commanded by Captain Lapp and Lieutenant Bodenhamer and marched toward Wilmington, NC and while on the march, they helped to scatter Tories at "Rafts Swamp" and from there he marched to the mouth of the Neuse River where they made an attack, which was occupied by a British garrison, and then marched toward Georgetown, SC and back. They lay in the backwoods until the news assured them that Cornwallis had been taken. He was then marched home and discharged. He recollects that at "Rafts Swamp" there were 200 men of Guilford that were shot. He states he has no documentary evidence of his service and knows no person who can testify to his service except the testimony of Jacob Idol. He also states that in his neighborhood he is known to Charles Banner and Jacob Carson who can testify of his transactions for his service as a soldier of the Revolution. Sworn and submitted this day and year aforesaid - Samuel Jackson - (his mark)
Samuel and Hannah Gibson Jackson were married at the home of Elisha Pierce, a friend, on a cold winter day by a Justice of the Peace, Micajah Clark. Rev. William Stephens, a preacher from the Baptist Church, was supposed to perform the ceremony, but was taken ill and gave the certificate to Micajah Clark to perform the ceremony. A wedding supper was held for them at her father's home after their return home from Elisha Pierce's home. 14

-"Born in North Carolina in 1796 (source2 shows 1791). He came to Ohio, then in 1820 came to West River, Randolph County, Indiana in 1820 (settling near Hugh Botkin's, 1/2 mile north of John F. Hunnicutt's on Martindale Creek) He married in Ohio Jemima Cox, daughter of William Cox, and they had 11 children all grown and married and 9 living now, the youngest that is alive being 40 years old and the oldest sixty-four. One in Missouri, four in Randolph, two in Iowa, 1 in Wayne Co. and 1 in Wisconsin. In politics he was a Whig. He died in 1948 aged 52 years. His wife was a Friend, and she died in 1861 at 67. Mrs. Ballinger, daughter of Samuel Jackson, says that she can remember the storm of the Fallen Timber, and thinks that she was 6 to 8 years old. She was born in 1820 and that would make the date of the storm be in 1826 or 1828. Jere Smith puts the time in 1824. She would then be four years old or more. Probably Mr. Smith is correct, and she was younger than she thinks. Mrs. Retz's membory also would seem to make the storm later than 1824. Mrs. Ballinger says that Carey Smith, brother of Jere Smith, was a Disciple preacher in those early times, and that Methodists held preachings at Hugh Botkin's and Jesse Cox's and also at Mr. Lank's. Mr. Jackson's children were William, dead, had 7 children; Hannah (Hutchens,Chamness),6 children; Betsy Ballinger, Randolph Co., 8 children; Sarah Hutchens, Iowa, 12 children; John, near Winchester, 12 children; Anna Hutchens, Wisconsin, 7 children; Jemima Cox, Randolph Co., 3 children; Rebecca Owens, Kansas, 7 childrn; Jacob, dead, had 7 children, Jacob Jackson was captain in the 69 Regiment in the army; Melinda Condi, Iowa, 4 children; Mary Hutchens, Wayne Co., 9 children. -moved from Stokes Co., NC to Indiana somewhere around 1830 as his son George was born in Indiana, with one source saying Delaware Co. and one saying Randolph Co., IN2
-from a page in the History of Morgan County 1878 (Illinois?)-"The father of this notice, Hiram Jackson, was a native of North Carolina, was born in 1804 (this disputes the information from source2), and emigrated to Indiana, settling in Putnam County....was married in 1826 to Nancy Malcolm and had these children: Samuel A., Mary A., Silas, George W., Nancy J., Diana, Phebe, Matilda, Hiram, William H. and Jehu.æ10
-in 1835 Hiram and his family made the trip overland to Missouri Crossing at Alton. While in the act of boarding the flatboat, the cable rope broke, throwing the team and wagon into the river, and almost drowning the little George, their son. After gaining the shore, they continued on their journey, settling in Barry Co. MO on homesteaded government land, built a log cabin, sold out, and moved to Illinois, crossing the Mississippi at St. Louis, MO and settled in St. Clair Co., IL in 1838. They lived there for 5 years, pulled stakes and moved to Washington Co., MO, entered a claim on 160 acres of land, erected a neat frame dwelling, the first of the kind in the area, improved the tract and in 1849, sold out and moved to Texas. They bought a farm of 900 acres of land, lived there but two years and again moved to Scott Co., IL and purchased a small farm of 40 acres. He sold this and moved to Macoupin Co., IL and farmed until the affliction of sore eyes caused him to give up work altogether.12

-source Kathie Johnston states " I have a great deal of info on the descendants of Joseph Jackson and Phoebe Cox, including copies of the pension applications for all four of the sons who served in the Civil War. There is another cousin, Woods Kenneth Wellbourne in Texas, who also has information on the Joseph and Phoebe line. One of Joseph and Phoebe's lines comes down to Brian Keith, the actor, and his father, Robert Keith, an actor/director. Brian Keith and my father are contemporaries, but only met a few times, as very little boys while visiting aunts and uncles in Iowa, and then at a family funeral as young adults. Much of the family lived(s) in and around Henry, Louisa and Washington Cos. in Iowa, near Columbus Junction, Ottumwa, Oskaloosa and Fremont. Much of the land is still in the family-140 or so years after they first settled"
This source tells of an Aunt Nelly Martin Barthel who was the youngest of ten children and was the spinster daughter who stayed home to tend her aged parents. Since she was the youngest child of ten, and since some of her direct ancestors in previous generations were also the youngest children, she had almost a direct connection with Samuel Jackson, who fought in the Revolutionary War. She was not alive to meet her Grandfather, Joseph Jackson, Samuel's youngest son, but remembered her grandmother Phoebe Cox Jackson very well.
From Randolph County on the eastern side of IN, Joseph and his family gradually moved across the state of IN, and their children were born in various counties. It is unclear when they moved to IA, although they presumably moved with or followed at least one of their children who moved there as adults.10
-source says that “ the North Carolina Jacksons were also owners of large numbers of slaves. Of 1746 slaves recorded in Stokes County in 1810, something above 1170 belonged to members of the JACKSON family. Joseph H. JACKSON’s father (Samuel) freed all of his slaves a number of years prior to the Civil War. From 1625 through the years on the plantation in Stokes County the Jacksons made frequent trips back to visit their relatives in England. At different times relatives from England came to visit the Jacksons in America. Joseph H. is known to have gone back to visit relatives and to buy furniture for their home. The parents, however, remained on the plantation where they later died.” (this was taken from an article by Alice Tucker)12

Honest, perservering and fairly successful, he bore throughout his long life in his sturdiness of character and strength of will, the strong marks of the pioneer. His ancestory were mainly of Quaker stock and his religious views partook of that ancient faith, and he exemplified many of the traits of steadiness of purpose, independence of surroundings and eveness of temper common to that race and faith. He was the father of many children of whom four daughters and one son preceded him in death. Four daughters, namely Rebecca A. Bales, Sarah E. Starbuck, Margaret L. Pursley and Emma G. Jackson and one son Grant Jackson who now lives in Texas are still living. He left no wife surviving him. Of those children whose death preceded his, two daughters Catherine and Jemima and a son William all reached years of maturity. Jemima was married to Peter Hardwick and left tow sons who still survive. john had lived to see changes innumerable with their round of joy and sorrow and in the fullness of years he has been gathered to his Father’s. He belonged to that class of men who do the work of the world, fulfilling God’s command to the first man to subdue the earth. He was not faultless-who is-but he had strong virtues and noble purposes and it can be truthfuly said of him that the earth was better for his having lived therein. Taken from the HISTORY OF RANDOLPH CO., IN by Ebenezer Tucker written in 1882, of the 121st Regiment's movements since its inception:
"ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIRST REGIMENT, NINTH CAVALRY, THREE YEARS.
Organized March 1, 1864, at Indianapolis; Colonel, George W. Jackson. (my note: Lieutenant Colonel Eli Lilly-THE ELI LILLY of the drug company fame...)
Mustered out at Vicksburg August 28, 1865.
Officers, 48; men, 1219; recruits, 67; died, 206; deserted, 126; unaccounted for, 20; total 1,334.
The regiment left Indianapolis May 3, 1864, for Pulaski, Tenn., and was on duty there till November 23, engaged in the Forrest and Wheeler campaigns of the time. At Sulphur Branch Trestle, Ala., September 25, 1864, a detachment of the regiment lost, in an engagement with Forrest, 120 killed, wounded and missing.
On Hood's approach, the regiment fell back to Nashville, and the men were mounted and sent to the front. At Franklin, it suffered a loss of twenty-six officers and men. After Hood's retreat, they took up winter quarters at Gravelly Springs, Ala., from January 6 to February 6, 1865, and, at the latter date, proceeded to New Orleans. Turning over their horses, the Ninth returned to Vicksburg March 25. Remaining on duty there to May 5, they were remounted and employed in garrisoning posts in the interior of Mississippi. May 22, 1865, the regiment came again to Vicksburg, to be mustered out; but the act was not accomplished till August 28, 1865.
They arrived at Indianapolis September 5, 1865. A public reception was held for that and other returned regiments September 6, 1860.
The number of men on the muster-out was 386. April 26, 1865, fifty-five were lost by the explosion of the steamer Sultana on her homeward passage up the Mississippi, they having been paroled from rebel imprisonment. The survivors reached Indianpolis in May, and were mustered out as a paroled prisoners of war.

-from the Arrears of Pension application filed by Jacob's wife Esther in 1879, it shows that a physician who attended Jacob at his death, John W. BOTKIN, MD, testified "that Jacob came home from the Army suffering with an injury to his breast and collar bone with said bone being broken. If so, maybe he had a connection with TN73

--this Jacob A. JACKSON, who resided in Liberty township, Randolph Co., IN, mustered out 18 July 1863 in Company D of the 105th Regiment -from Randolph Co., IN (Minute Men-Morgan’s Raid). This regiment was organized 12 July 1863 and Kline G. Shryock was Colonel and it contained 713 men. They left instantly for Lawrenceburg. After marching around for several days in pursuit of Morgan, and finding that he had gone eastward through Ohio, and beyond their reach, they returned to Indianapolis in just six days after they had quitted it, and were mustered out on 18 July 1865.94
-Jacob joined the Civil War on 16 May 1863 as a member of the Liberty Tigers (from Liberty Township, Randolph Co., IN)
-”several Quakers also enrolled for military duty for defensive purposes when Confederate General John Hunt Morgan invaded the state of Indiana in the summer of 1863. Morgan’s penetration into southern Indiana late in the evening of 8 July 1863 created much excitement, fear, and conflicting and exaggerated rumors prompting Governor Oliver P. Morton to issue a call for citizens to organize for defense. In less than forty-eight hours sixty-five thousand men volunteered to repulse Morgan’s daring raid. These Minute Men were organized into thirteen regiments and numerically designated from 102nd to the 114th inclusive. Companies in which Quakers volunteered, frequently titled by colorful names such as Buck Tails and Liberty Tigers, were found in ten of these units. Although only the southern counties were imminently threatened, Quakers from central Indiana also responded to Morton’s call. Quakers from the counties of Hamilton, Wayne, Hendricks, Randolph, Henry, Hancock, Maidson, and Marion joined Friends from Ornage and Washington couties in southern Indiana in repelling the rebel encroachment. When Morgan finally crossed the Indiana border into Ohio five days later, the crisis subsided, and the Minute Men were mustered out of service. He left behind, however, a trail of destruction from Corydon to Versailles and brought the war frightfully close to many peaceful Indiana communities.”95

Henrietta Jackson Snyder's Winfield Beacon obituary Thursday, January 17, 1935 read as follows (Parenthetical notes added for clarity):
MRS. H. SNYDER, AGED RESIDENT, DIES MONDAY - Rites Held Wednesday In Daughter's Home Here.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock for Mrs. Henrietta Snyder, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. E.(Carrie) Williamson here Monday night (14 Jan 1935). She had been ill only a few days and died very quickly without any suffering. The services were held at the home and burial was in Asbury Cemetery where Mrs. Snyder's father and mother are buried. She was ninety-four years and three months of age, one of Winfield's oldest residents, and had been in excellent health up to the time of the illness which cost her life.
Mrs. Snyder was a pioneer resident of southern Iowa, having spent the early years of her life in Henry county (Records indicate Louisa rather than Henry County) near Wapello; and returning here with her daughter eight years ago to spend the remaining years of her life. Her father (Joseph Jackson) died and was buried here when she was a but seventeen years old. Shortly afterward she was married and moved with her husband to Hutchinson, Kansas, where the family eventually made its home (Note: 1880 Census and other records show they resided in Pine Township near Fowler, Benton County, Indiana for several years where Henry was sheriff from 1888 to 1892 before moving on to Hutchinson, Kansas). The husband died twenty-three years ago and since then Mrs. Snyder has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Williamson, who lived in Chicago up until eight years ago when they came to Winfield so that the elderly lady might again live a month the friends and scenes of her early life.
Of the eight children, four are living. The other four, Vestal, Wallace, Lou and Della, having died some years ago (Correction: Dell was not deceased; rather, she is the Mrs. Robinson quoted later in this obituary). William Snyder is located at Los Angeles, California; Joseph Snyder at Hutchinson, Kansas; Mrs. William Robinson (Dell, the mother of stage and screen actor/director Keith Richey, stage name Robert Keith}makes her home in Chicago.
Mrs. Snyder and her children have spent a great part of their lives together, even after the children were grown and living in their own homes. On the occasion of her ninety-fourth birthday, only three months past, she was able to join them in fun and pastimes that are denied to many women of advanced years. In the words of Mrs. Robinson, "They used to call us the Three Musketeers; for we were always together, mother, my sister and myself.
The funeral services were conducted at the Williamson home by the Rev. J. W. Gray, pastor of the Presbyterian church. (NOTE: Henrietta's daughter, Carrie Snyder Williamson, died just three months later, March 7, 1935, of diabetic infection, and also was buried in Asbury Cemetery, next to her mother. The graves of Henrietta, Carrie and Della remain unmarked and so were not included in the official, bound Asbury Cemetery record at the public library in Mt. Pleasant, Henry County seat; they are shown, however, in the more-recent list, referred to above, prepared by Philip Crawford, a 2001-era overseer of Asbury Cemetery: Asbury Cemetery near Olds in Henry County, Iowa: 2nd row from west side, Henrietta is buried in space 9A, from north end, between her parents and her daughters Della, 9B, and Carrie, 10A.
------
In 2001, Dale Spangler, age 82, recalled his Aunt Rett, Henrietta Jackson, from his youth: 1) "She told of their family being attacked by Indians, whether in a covered wagon train I'm not sure. Her hair was always beautifully done up, and she was very sharp and quick to answer. We (with his mother) would quite often go to their home in Winfield (Henry County, Indiana) after we had been to the movies (Henrietta, with her daughter Carrie, returned to the vicinity where she spend much of her youth and resided in Winfield the last eight years of her life: See her obituary). She would sometimes take out a box of chocolates and give me a piece, but only one. My mother once told her that Con, my dad, and she, Bertha, were married on February 4 and I was born on February 6. Aunt Rett quickly replied, 'You were in kind of a hurry, weren't you?' My mother hastened to assure her that my February 6 birthday was five years later! Carrie and Dell, her daughters, lived with her in a farm house, no longer existent, on the Asbury Cemetery road, and later in Winfield. Also living with them was Elwood Williamson, Carrie's husband, who's only occupation I know of was selling very expensive, at that time, shoes at about $35 per pair. Carrie shared my love of Chicken livers, and at family dinners would often (in a teasing way) get them out of the frying pans before I had a chance at them!" In 2001, Dale's cousin, Shasta Spangler Marshall, remembered sitting on her "Aunt Rett's" lap and combing her hair. She also recalled that Henrietta's daughter, Dell, was very trim and well dressed, but that whenever she would visit from Chicago "we" would wonder what color her hair would be this time (Source (2001): Shasta Spangler Marshall, 107 N. -This Henrietta Jackson Snyder (on some records spelled, "Snider") was my great grandmother. I have copies of records substantiating the following information.
Henrietta died 14 Jan 1935 (See her obituary below. I also have the Record of Deaths listing for her from Henry County Iowa.
Researching Henry and Henrietta's family is made more difficult as his name has been recorded variously, such as:
1) The Roster of Iowa Soldiers, War of The Rebel ion, Volume I, p.763, and on their wedding record in Louisa County, Iowa Marriage Book C, page. 48: "Henry W. Snider";
2) 1880 U.S. census for Pine Township, Benton County, Indiana page 292: "Wallace Snider" (Leola Grim Tobin's records of the Jacksons similarly refers to him as "Wall Snyder");
3) The Life and Times of John P. Doyle (1888), page 71 (Benton County Library, IN 929.2 D754L c.1) lists Republican candidate "H. W. Snyder". That book also refers to him as "Wall Snyder";
4) Benton County And Historic Oxford, Chapter XIII, County Officials, Sheriffs, page 209 lists: "Henry Snyder" as being the sheriff from 1888 to 1892;
5) Hutchinson, Kansas City Directories from 1899 through 1910 list "Snyder, Henry W., Justice of the Peace" with wife, Henrietta; and
6) his obituary Friday, May 26, 1911, in The Hutchinson News and his grave marker in East Side Cemetery at Hutchinson refer to him as "H. W. Snyder";
7) Henrietta's obituary lists her as "Mrs. Henrietta Snyder."
Henry and Henrietta's only sons who survived into my time, Joseph and William, and their descendants all spelled their surname "Snyder."

There is a point of confusion regarding Henry and Henrietta's children. One source only, the family record written some years ago by Dale Spangler and Shasta Spangler Marshall's cousin, Leola Grim Tobin, indicated they had an eighth child, a sister of Della named Delia (no birth or death dates were cited) This seems unlikely as the 1880 census listed only seven children: Carrie, Vestal Wallace, Louis, Della, and William--Joseph was born the following year, one year prior to Benton County, Indiana births were recorded. Compounding the confusion, Henrietta's obituary included Della among four of her children said to have died some years earlier. I was born just three years prior to that obituary being written and well remember Aunt Dell coming to Hutchinson Kansas to visit her brother, Joe, my grandfather, several times several years later, during the late 1930's and/or early 1940's. If there had been a Delia, though, It could have been that our Aunt Dell was she, rather than Della. Surely it was Dell being quoted in Henrietta's obituary as "Mrs. Robinson" as Henrietta's second daughter, Carrie, was Mrs. Williamson with whom Henrietta resided (See obituary below). If there were an eighth child named Delia I would suppose she died very young and that Della, born later, was given a similar name. -youngest child in a family of 10 children. Information on Jacob and Nelly's children and grandchildren in this file.
On 20 Jun 1917 when Nelly was 39, she married Jacob A. BARTHEL10, in Ottumwa, Iowa.10 Born on 21 Sep 1872 in Denton, MD.10 Jacob A. died in Chicago, Cook Co., IL, on 7 Oct 1939; he was 67.10

256. Wallace SNYDER.45 Wallace died in Apr 1899 in Hutchinson, KS.45
-Wallace, an attorney, died within a few months of moving to Hutchinson, Kansas; His April 14,1899 obituary in The Hutchinson News read as follows:
"The death of Wallace Snyder occurred yesterday evening at his home on Avenue A east. He was a bright young man, a member of the Reno County bar, and, although he had been here but a few months, had won the respect of the members of the bar and all with whom he had come in contact. The cause of his death was consumption, a disease from which he had been suffering for several years.
He was abut 27 years of age and came here from Indiana hoping that the climate would restore his failing health. With his brother (Louis) he opened a law office here. The disease had too firm a hold upon him and the Kansas climate failed to stay its progress.
A bar meeting was held at the court house, and court will be adjourned out of respect for the deceased brother. Resolutions were passed and committees appointed to assist at the funeral. Pall bearers were selected from the bar membership as follows: Carr W. Taylor, J. F. Lawson, Howard Lewis, W. E. Vincent, Sheridan Ploughe and R. L. Burns.
The funeral will be held from the home on Avenue A east tomorrow at 2 o'clock, and the members of the bar will meet at the court house and will go in a body to the late home of the deceased brother to attend the funeral services."
