Any information on Peter Jacob born Wexford 1831/2?

Hi
I'm trying to find information on Peter Jacob, my ggg grandfather, born 1831/2 in Wexford. In the 1851 census he is lodging with a family by the name of Kehoe (Daniel Kehoe/Bridget Jacob) in Bedwelty, Monmouthshire, Wales and is listed as a visitor. There is also a Mary Jacob (b 1781)and a Pathric Jacob (b 1831/2) at the same address. Mary is listed as a visitor but Pathrick is listed as a nephew. I do not know if Mary is Peter's mother or what happened to her. The Kehoe family went to America some time before 1861 and I can't work out if Peter is related in any way to Bridget Kehoe (Jacob). In 1861 Peter is married and living in Birmingham, England. A visitor from Wexford, Sarah Deigh (b 1841) is also listed. In 1881 they are living in Birkenhead (near Liverpool)and have another Irish visitor staying - Ann O'Sullivan (b 1849). I would be really grateful if anyone has any information about Peter. Thanks

Jane Menzies Jacob, born 1817 Chatham, Kent

Hi,
The above person was my 3x removed great grandmother, her parents were William and Catherine Jacob. The Menzies I think might have been her mother's surname. There is definitely a Scottish connection here with the name Menzies. Jane married a William Kettle (I haven't found the marriage yet though). Jane named one of her son's Henry Douglas and my gg grandmother's name was Ellen Margaret.
If anyone thinks they have a connection I would be interested to hear from them.
Peter Jacob, 1827-1869, Civil War Veteran, Photo

I am hoping to find a photo of Peter Jacob, Civil War veteran.

Peter Jacob is my gg-gf. He was born Mar 3, 1827 in Hesse, Germany. He married Eva Katherine Oehlenschläger, Mar 23, 1850 in Rimbach, Starkenburg, Hessen, Germany and then emigrated to Terre Haute, Vigo Co., IN, arriving in New York City, Aug 7, 1857.

He enlisted Aug 24, 1861 in Co E, 32nd Regiment, Indiana Infantry [“All German Regiment”]. He was discharged Sep 7, 1864 and subsequently was killed in a sawmill accident in Terre Haute Oct 8, 1869.

According to family lore, a photo of Peter Jacob in his uniform was taken shortly after his discharge and return home in 1864. I confirmed with a living family member that this photo definitely existed, but has been missing for at least 10 years. I have checked the Vigo County Public Library & the Indiana state Archives with no luck.

I am hoping that somebody else may have been able acquire this photo or make a copy of it sometime over the years.

Thanks for any help or clues.

[I am cross-posting this message on multiple boards.]

Jerry Jacobs
Hello Jake ... Do you know of any connection to the JACOB family that worked on the Oak Park Estate in County Carlow in the late 1800's? My great-great grandfather was John JACOB and he was married to Elizabeth Anne PIERCE Jacob. I know that his father's name was also JOHN JACOB but I have no idea of birthdate or place of birth.

Hi Robert.

No problems about previous emails. I thought that Samuel Friend and Augusta Jacob came over to England after 1858 as the last child listed as being born in Prussia was Michael Friend. Then Elizabeth Friend was born in England in 1860 and that is the first census that I found the family on 1861, in 1871 census all children are listed as being born in England which is not the case, they had five children born in Prussia and six born in England. I have traced the children and have got certificates for marriages etc. Augusta Jacob died in 1872. I have also found a death certificate for Samuel Friend died in 1895 in Strand Workhouse. Samuel was a tailor by trade. I have had contact with several distant relatives and none have info on Samuel before 1861. I was told by the Jewish Society that Augusta Jacob is a Jewish name but no luck tracing her either and the Jewish faith was not practiced going on later marriages of children. Also the first children were Albert born 1853, Jacob(changed to John)born 1853,(these were twins we believe) Harris(sometimes called Harry) born 1856, Davis(changed to David)my GtGrandfather born 1857 and Michael born 1858. All birth dates are approximate. I have check some immigrations records but no luck, but to be honest I am not sure what I have doing half the time and any help would be appreciated.

I have deleted the thread I think and put a new one on Germany in the general enquiry section.

Kind regards

my gtgt grandparents came over to England abt 1858 Augusta Jacob is listed on the 1861 census as being born in Hanover and Samuel Friend born in Prussia abt 1825. I feel that they had Jewish blood but this was never evident in marriages of their children etc. Children married catholics and church of england partners.

Can anyone help please.

Victoria, I thought I would reply to you here, rather than send you another reply on the Poland message board.

There has been a big misunderstanding. The last reply of mine that you read was NOT directed towards you! That reply was directed to Jerry Frank! I took great offence to his having said in his reply to you -- and you of course read this yourself -- "your understanding of the history is more accurate than Robert's." In view of the fact that I spent six years engaged in postgraduate studies in history at the University of Munich in Germany, I of course took offence to his having implied that my knowledge of Central European history is wanting. Again, that last reply you read was directed towards him, not towards you.

Everything, everything he told you in his reply was wrong! I have never been able to quite understand why people reply to queries, why they interfere in a poster's thread, when, to put it plainly, they do not know what they are talking about.

I would suggest, Victoria, that you delete your initial query and all your replies from the Poland message board and re-post your initial query on the GERMANY message board, where your query actually belongs. If Samuel Friend and Augusta Jacob lived in Prussia and in Hanover, respectively, which were two of Germany's states, they had nothing whatsoever to do with Poland.

Where exactly in England did they live? Did you find them and/or any of their children in censuses other than 1861?

I would possibly be able to find their arrival information if you had a bit of a less vague idea as to when the family came to England. What is it that makes you think it was 1858?

Robert T.
Re: Mary Jacob (d. of Nicholas)

This is what I found with the help of a few researchers of the Jacobs, Jeff Alexander being the best jacobs researcher out there. Mary was not born in Hingham, Mass but Hingham, Norfolk England. Not sure if you have found this but i will include it.

George Lincoln, et. al.
History of Hingham

JACOB.

NICHOLAS, the ancestor of all the families bearing this surname in Hing. and vic., was one of the very few early planters who came to "Bare Cove" prior to the arrival of Rev. Peter Hobart and his company in 1635. According to Cushing's MS., "Nicholas Jacob with his wife and two children and their cosen Thomas Lincoln, weaver, came from Old Hingham and settled in this Hingham, 1633." In Sept. 1635, he had a grant of a house-lot containing three acres on Town St., second from the way leading to Broad Cove, which is ab. where the homestead belonging to heirs of the late William O. Lincoln is located. Other lands were also granted to him at different dates for planting purposes. He was made freeman 1635-36; was selectman in 1637; deputy to the General Court 1648 and 1649, and often engaged upon the business of the town. The chris. name of his w. was Mary. She survived him, and m. secondly, March 10, 1658-59, John Beal, widr. Nicholas d. 5 June, 1657, leaving an est. appraised at £393 8s. 6d. In his will of May 18, 1657, proved 25 July foll., he gives to "wife Mary, the bed which she usually lyeth upon with all the furniture thereto belonging to dispose of to whom she pleases;" also £30 in money. To "my children, Joseph, Hannah, and Deborah £10 each, in addition to what they have already had, . . . To the eldest son John a double portion," . . . and "to the rest of my children," viz.: Joseph Jacob, Mary Otis, Elizabeth Thaxter, Sarah Cushing, Hannah Jacob, and Deborah Jacob, equal shares, "and every one of them shall pay to their mother" a stipulated sum, yearly. Witnesses, Edmund Pitts, Thomas Marsh, Matthew Hawke.

Hope this helps.

John Jacob - d. Chester, VT 1822

Has anyone found a John Jacob born in 1731?

I'm descended from John Jacob who is buried in Chester, VT and died on Jan 2, 1822. His headstone gives no date of birth but says he was "A.E. 90 years." A fellow descendant researched this Latin "A.E." and determined that it meant "AE Latin Aetatis; Years of life." He felt this suggests that the John buried in Chester was already 90 years old when he died.

Everyone I've found who has researched the John Jacob buried in Chester has concluded he was born on Aug. 3, 1732 in Rehoboth, MA. However, that John would have only been 89 on Jan 2, 1822 and would have had many months to go before turning 90. Thus raising the question is the John buried in Chester, VT really the John born in Rehoboth, MA?

If the John buried in Chester was already 90 then he would have been born in 1731 and despite the numerous John Jacobs out there I've yet to find one born in 1731.

Any thoughts or clues would be most welcome.

Thank you,

Lorraine
