Jacobus - James link
I hit a roadblock while researching when I discovered that the James branch of my family was not always called James. For years I heard the name used to be Kovis/Covis but after finding not records of any kind with that name someone suggested it may have been Jacobus as the family was Dutch in origin and James and Jacob are the same name/different language (Jack/John for example).
The name change was a result of a family disagreement and likely occured in the late 1800's. The family at that time was in NC, I believe, in the Piedmont area.
Some other family names in the area were Reid, Spach/Spaugh, Mack/Mock, Hauser, Miller, Martin, and Bodenheimer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
