I am also a descendent from a Jacobus from Waldlaubersheim. My great, great, great grandfather was Philipp Jacobus, born 15 Jun 1801 in Waldlaubersheim. This is a record I have in a family Bible. The translation of the full text is "Philipp Jacobus born 15 June, 1801
The baptism witnesses were Pf. Marx and his wife, Gebohren-maiden name Krupp. My wife Martha [unreadable] was born in Mandel on 22nd Dec. 1805. The baptism witnesses were Peter Schneider from Mandel and Martha [Balmbach?] from Windesheim. We above named got married in the year 1826 [small unreadable word] the second Christmasday. Our daughter [Christina, my g,g, grandmother] was born in the year 1828, 17th May. Godparents are my mother Maria Christina. Our son [Philipp or Phillip, jr.] was born in the year 1832, 14th of October. The godparents have been Philipp [Kercher?] from [Göhnheim] and Philipp [Weiners?] from here."
In the 1870 census he is living in Greenfield, MA, with his son Phillip (married to Agnes Sauter), age 70.
In the 1880 census he is living in Greenfield (age 79) with his daughter, "Christrian Jacobus," [Christina] who is the widow of Jacob Sauter.
There was a Philip Jacobus and a wife Martha with the correct dates of birth, both from Germany, on the 1860 Census living in Galloway Township in New Jersey, he was listed as a shoemaker.
I have a fair bit of information about the descendents of Christina Jacobus Sauter and her brother Phillip Jacobus (who married Agnes Sauter), but I have nothing about the ancestors of their father Philipp (other than his mother's name was Maria Christina)

I was browsing the Jacobus message board when I noticed your posting that mentioned Addie's son Alexander having married Elizabeth Kehoe. I found your family history on Ancestry that showed Elizabeth's mother as Catherine Burns (but no father). I could only find one Elizabeth Kehoe born about 1882 and living in Newark. Her mother was Elizabeth Burns and her father Nicholas Kehoe. This Elizabeth Kehoe was my grandmother's sister. I found the family in the 1900 census and the 1895 NJ census. My grandmother was Sarah (born 1884). Are you sure of the Catherine?
Pat Hovell
Denver

Hi,
I found Julia A. Anderson in census records, but her husband is listed as David, not Daniel.
Did you notice in the 1850 Census, David and Julia A. live in the same house as James (51) and Margaret (52) Jacobus (indexed as Jacobes)? James and David have the same occupation--toll gatherer. At 30 Julia is not too old to be James & Margaret's daughter. However, it is also possible for her to be James' sister.

1850 Harrison, Hudson, NJ
James Jacobus 51 NJ
Margaret 52 NJ
Margaret 14 NJ
Sarah Colman 80 NJ
Mary Jager 15 NJ
Wm. Shumaker 34 Servant Germany

Hope this is of some help.
Julia Ann Jacobus - NJ

I am searching for the parents of my 3rd great grandmother, Julia Ann Jacobus. According to census records, she was born abt 1821 in New Jersey. She married Daniel Anderson in 1839 and had 9 children: James, William, Elizabeth, Joseph, Harriet, Ada, Franklin, Julia, and Harry. The family lived in either Hudson or Essex counties over the years. I'm not having much luck figuring out her parentage, although I have seen her listed as a child of Simon Jacobus/Catherine Decker and Simon Jacobus/Elizabeth Van Houton. I have no proof of either. I'm also unable to find her date of death.

Thank you for any help!
Tina Hursh

Re: Isaac Jacobus

Isaac was a popular name in the Jacobus family. It makes sorting them out difficult. My Jacobus line was in Essex Co., so mine won't help.

Have you looked through the Birth and Marriage Records for your county? New Jersey began keeping them in 1848.

The birth records were not always complete as the attending doctor sent them in. He didn't always know the baby's name, so that is sometimes left off.

Marriage records, however, were usually complete. The participants were adults, knew all the information and gave it to the record taker. The Pastor, judge, or JP taking the records often knew the families.

If you don't or didn't find them in the year you expect, try the year preceeding and the 2 years after. Sometimes the doctor or pastor waited a while before sending in the information. A less populous area would have fewer births or marriages and the pastor or doctor would wait until he had full page in his record book filled in and then send it to the record keeper with the county. I have found some records in books as far 3 years out of date.

Hi,
I am looking for ancestry of Isaac Jacobus b. ca. 1860 in NJ, possibly in the area of Johnsonburg, Warren County.

The only evidence to support that as his birthplace is a delayed birth certificate, issued in 1944, in which his ex-wife states that he, she, and their daughter were all born there. Certainly, the 2 women were born in that area, but they had been divorced for over 20 years, and she was almost 70 years old when she made the statement.

I have found them in the census, living with her parents, and his birthplace is listed as NJ and date listed as 1860. He married Cora Losey, daughter of Nathan Losey and Louisa Koker. They had 3 children: Susie (1898-1982), Mahlon and Harry.

An Isaac Jacobus died in Stanhope in the early 1930s. That Isaac had a sister, Sarah. I'm not sure if he is the same one or not. There seems to be another Isaac close to the same age and locality during my Isaac's lifetime.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

I'm not sure we're related, but I think we are. I am descendent from Lewis Jacobus of Hasbrouck Heights NJ. He had 13 children and was married to Grace nee Lightwize. My mother Emma was #5 of 13. I know we had other relatives in the area, but am unsure exactly where. Unfortunately, most of my aunts/uncles have begun to pass away. We still have 3 uncles and 1 aunt living but they are the younger ones. My sister and I are hoping to begin the process of tracing our ancestry on the Jacobus side. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. I think my grandfather was second generation but he may have been first. My mother was born in 1922 so my grandfather had to be born around the late 1890's or so. You would think with all those children we would have had alot of information but we don't. The children's names were Lewis, June, Georgianna, Daniel, Emma, Blanche, Harold, Delores, John, Shirley, Richard, Raymond and Robert. Married daughters last names include Berkhoffer, Carlock, DeWitt, McIntyre, Folhbrecht and Karklin. If any of these names ring any bells, please let me know. My grandfather worked for Bergen County. I know one of my greatgrandfather's ran a small store in Hasbrouck Heights, but am unsure if he was on the Jacobus side or Lightwize. Thank you.

I probably have no more info than you, & perhaps much less.
When I was researching in NJ (1970/80), the internet didn't exist - or certainly not to the extent that it does now, and not in the area of genealogy. The time frame of my research was VERY remote, original documents simply don't exist, those that exist were difficult to locate &/or were not accessible to the general public.
When I returned to these lines a couple of years ago, I had already moved South (now in FL), so the lion's share of my info was obtained from the net, available to all.
I descend from Jacobus Janse & Jannetje Oothout through 2 of their kids - Brant Jacobus who m Elizabeth Harris/Errese, wid Mandeville, - & Jannetje who m Hartman Claes Vreeland. These 2 lines came together in the person of my great great grandmother, Catherine Jacobus, wife of John Dayton Hedden of Newark, NJ, & daughter of Hessel Jacobus and Mary Vreeland of Towaco, NJ.
My work is FAR from adequately documented. And is fuzzy & confusing in some respects. I doubt that I will have much, if anything, to contribute.
In any event I have a great deal going on in my life at the present and will be unable to explore further with you until after the New Year. Meanwhile, have a wonderful holiday season.

Re: Jacobus - James link

If you descend from the NJ Jacobus family, you will be happy to know that men named James Jacobus appeared in almost every generation from the mid/late 1600s (Albany, NY) to the present. As with most Dutch. they didn't have surnames; their 2nd name was the name of their father. Jacobus Janse (Jacob s/o Jan) was an early member of the RDC in Albany pre 1683.) Two of the sons of Jacobus Janse (respectively Roelof Jacobus & Brant Jacobus) began using Jacobus as a surname. One of those sons had a son Jacobus, from whom I descend. His 1st name was Jacobus, i.e. his name was Jacobus Jacobus. But he was also called James Jacobus and Cobus Jacobus. Hope this helps you understand how/why the confusion re: James & Cobis (Cobus) occurred.

Re: Isaac Jacobus

Rachel Van Ness and Isaac Jacobus were married in Caldwell in 1820; the 1850 census gives Rachel's age as 49, which suggests that she was born ca. 1801. The Simon Van Ness who married Hester Delameter was born ca. 1666; Hester was his second wife, whom he married in 1701. The fact that Rachel Van Ness Jacobus was born about 100 years after Simon and Hester were married makes it very unlikely that they were her parents. Northern New Jersey is full of multiple generations of men with the same name, whether Van Ness, Jacobus, or any number of other families, which often leads to great confusion. I have found any number of examples in the Jacobus family.

Your Isaac Jacobus is, I think, Isaac M. Jacobus of Caldwell, b. ca. 1833 and listed as a 17-year-old farmer in the 1850 census as a member of the household of Isaac I. and Rachel (Van Ess) Jacobus of Caldwell. Isaac M. Jacobus is also listed in the 1871 estate partition of Isaac I. Jacobus of Caldwell.

Isaac M. Jacobus, a single man, age 21, of Caldwell, married Harriet Personette, 20, single, of Caldwell, on 20 Sept. 1854. According to the Doremus genealogy, Harriet was the daughter of George Personette and Elsje Doremus.

Hope this is helpful.

Re: Jacobus Marriage information needed

I tried to find the name for you online, but I had no luck. You could try these other searches, though:

Yes, Raymond was married previously because the 1900 census indicates he is widowed.

Also, I think his younger daughter's name is actually "Maude." You could order her birth certificate (born Oct. 1893) from http://www.state.nj.us/health/vital/genealogical.shtml. Maybe that will have her mother's maiden name?

You could also contact the Morris County Clerk and ask how to search for their marriage record in the years 1871-1887. Be careful, though, there may be more than one Raymond Jacobus.

Another source for marriage records is a Family History Center. You can order microfilms of both INDEXES of Morris County marriages and the certificates.

If none of these got results, you could then try the same searches for Essex County, NJ.

I don't think death/probate records searches would be as good since you don't have her full name.

For help with all these searches, see
http://mynewjerseygenealogy.com/index.htm and www.familysearch.org.

Good luck!

Re: Jacobus - James link

I am a NJ descendant of James Jacobus Jacobus, Barent Jacobus, and Jacob Jansz (Jacobus Jans), although the line gets fuzzy there. I was deighted to discover your March 2007 post regarding Roelof and Brant (Barent), and have been trying to learn enough to tack down the Jacob Jansz-Jannetje Oothout marriage, and who his parents might have been. A good assumption is that his children were named after his parents, so...
I would love to swap information, if this seems like a fit to you.
Steve Jacobus

Re: James G. Jacobus -- Caldwell, NJ

James G Jacobus was my G G G grandfather thru son William B thru his son Raymond thru his daughter Mary Jacobus thru her son, my father J Anton Schiffenhaus
James G Jacobus actually died on August 22, 1887.
I will send you a picture of his and wife Sarah Bush headstone from Hillside Cemetery in Fairfield, NJ and his Death certificate that shows his parents, Jacob Jacobus and Mary. Unfortunately most of the early Jacobus and most early members of the Dutch reformed church in Caldwell/Fairfield were lost in a fire at the church in the 1880s. Most of the info from the early 1800s come from the headstones in that Caldwell area antecdotal sources.
I also have a jpeg of caldwell 1880 that shows where he lived as it marks the "houses" of most of the residents.
I have more info and certs on most of his line except where/when Thomas H died. Thomas married his brother William to Leah C Van Houten (probably with shotgun as my G GF was born 2 months later:) Let me know and I will send to you what I have
Joseph A Schiffenhaus Jr

I am also looking for a Isaac Jacobus this one in Newark, Essex Co., NJ. He married Mary E. Keen on 1 May 1856. I find them in the 1860 census with their daughter Carrie age 3. I cannot find them in 1870 but believe their daughter is listed with her grandparents John and Abigail Jacobus age 13. Would you have notes for this Isaac in your records? I am trying to find out if this Mary Keen was the daughter of Elizabeth and Nathan Keen of the Newark area. Nathan b. circa 1790, Elizabeth b. circa 1800. Isaac b. 1835 and Mary b. 1836.

Thank you. That was very helpful. I don't know how I missed that census. Somewhere I got parents for Rachel Van Ness that are Simon Van Ness and Hester Delameter. Do you know why there is this confusion?

J & C JACOBUS

Hello.

I found the Jacobus family board on rootsweb while doing a web search, and was wondering if anyone monitoring this family thread can help me.

I have a countermarked coin in my collection that is stamped "J & C JACOBUS / WARRANTED / CAST STEEL / STEEL / 1234". It is an old large cent, and was probably stamped somewhere between 1840 and 1875. See the attached image. I am trying to determine the location and date that this company was in business. I was wondering if any of the Jacobus family researchers had ever come across this company name before.

Thanks! Bob M.
