In 1900 she is in the census with her parents David Jadwin and Elizabeth in Madison Co OH. At that time her parents were married 19y and her mother had 2 children, one of whom was living. (so presumably Daisy). David Jadwin and Elizabeth Jadwin had a daughter born May 1885 in Perry Co, OH.It looks like David Jadwin was living in Perry County, OH in 1880 with parents Thos Jadwin and Rebecca Jadwin.

a lot of names here look familiar

Hi everyone,

The name Matilda Sartore - that looks familiar she probably is one of my great, great grandmothers...I know it's on my small family tree on paper. I got this information from my grandfather - Howard William Jadwin who died about 1990 in Corona Del Mar, CA (Newport Beach,CA)
His father was Leon Jadwin - who served in the war-I think World War Two. Leon died in CA and was buried at at some national veterans cemetary in San Francisco,CA (Leon was single - I think maybe he married one time.) My grandfather was an only child and was actually raised by Leon's girlfriend and her mother.
Anyway...Matilida Sartore and the name William Jadwin are both on my family tree...tomarrow I will try to find it and post on here what little I know.

Anyway...I know Leon was born in NY and so was my grandfather...I think. My grandfather- Howard William Jadwin lived most his life in Glendale, CA and then retired to Corona Del Mar where he lived with his wife Helen (Rowan) Jadwin (my grandmother).
Howard W. Jadwin and Helen(Rowan-maiden)Jadwin
had two children:
Patricia Jadwin and Michael William Jadwin (my father)
Patricia is in her late 60s and married 2nd time. My father Michael W. Jadwin was married to Jeanne(Russo)Jadwin (my mother) from 1968-1988. My father passed away in 1998 at age 53 yrs. old.
This is where this tree ends...with my dad - Mike Jadwin because he had two girls - Kim (me) and LeeAnn (my sister). No boys.

What nationality is Matilda Sartore?? Is this Spanish or Italian? Or what?

I heard the Jadwin name was Welsh? Is this true?? from England, from Wales? or is it Irish. I think Jadwin is English(Welsh).

Anyway any info. on Leon Jadwin or his parents or Matilda Sartore or William Jadwin...would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Kim Jadwin
San Diego, CA
I am looking for information on a Anna Jadwin (middle name Hannah?) that married Joshua Mason 8/13/1846 in either Ohio or PA. If Ohio, the county could be either, Athens, Hocking or Vinton as changes were made to each of these counties. I know that Joshua was born in PA. I would be interested in the informal book on the Jadwins. Thanks!

Ron Remy

I'm sorry that I don't have the information you are seeking. I found a reference to Anna Jadwin in the Jadwin Family History by Howard Jadwin. She is referenced on pages 310-311. It states that she is found on the 1860 Census of Hocking Co. Ohi, married to Wm Mason. There are two Anna Jadwins listed in Marriage Records of Logan, Hocking Co. Ohio; both married in 1846. The family history book states that either of the Annas may have been a daughter of Henry or Bartholomew.

Kim...

Sortore line: "Sometime before 1730 Jacob and Catherine Sortore came to this country from the Palatine region of Germany. They and their family first settled in Somerset County, New Jersey. They had at least four children and most probably five. Other spellings of the name include SORTOR, SORTER, SARTOR, and SALTER. At the present time we have been able to find over 8,000 descendants and spouses".
http://www.sortore.com/

I have three Sortore-Jadwin marriages:
1) Anna Matilda Sortoro married George L. Jadwin.
2) Her brother, George Sortore, married Jane M. Jadwin, George Jadwin's sister.
3) Hanford H. Sortore, who married Lucinda Alice Jadwin, another sister of George Jadwin, was a cousin to Anna Matilda Sortore and George Sortore.

1850 Census lists George Jadwin, husband of Anna Matilda Sortore Jadwin, in Elmira, Chemung Co., NY, as Blacksmith.

I find a Leon Jadwin in this line but in my records, his genealogy differs from the information you posted.

My notes have him as the son of James Adelbert Jadwin, born in Belmont, Allegany County, NY. James Adelbert Jadwin is listed as the brother of William Howard (sic) Jadwin.
My source for much of this is
http://ia341035.us.archive.org/2/items/biographicalnote00wey...

I also have Leon married to a woman named Josephine and a person of this name buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery San Mateo, CA.
http://www.interment.net/data/us/ca/sanmateo/ggate/j/golden_...

She would have to have seen military service or be the widow of a veteran to be buried there.

Conflicts and confusion.
I'd like to add and correct some information in my 4 Aug 2009 posting about the JADWIN Surname.

Correction: Renselaer's DOD is not 1871. After finding his Last Will & Testament, he died somewhere between 31 Dec 1876 when he signed a codicil, and 24 Apr 1877, when the will was probated.

Addition: Renselaer JADWIN and Lydia LOOK had a daughter Melvina A., born prior to Truman and Phoebe. She appears on the 1840 Grafton Ohio Census in the 15-20y column. This places her birth ca. 1821-1825. I don't know the date of her parent's marriage. Melvina married David A. Rawson, 1 Jan 1845. This appears to be his second marriage. David is buried in Nesbitt Cemetery, but I can't find where Melvina is buried.

I am looking for information on my great great aunt, Lizzie Grace Jadwin. She was born Lizzie Grace McCarty in Deerfield, OH, to John Jackson and Malinda Dolson McCarty, married John Elmer Jadwin on 20 October 1897 by a preacher named P.H. Fry, and died 16 May 1899 at age 20. She is buried next to her sister, Roxanna (McCarty)Hemry, and parents in the Deerfield Township Cemetary, Deerfield, OH. After her death, John Jadwin remarried and had children. I would like to know Lizzie's cause of death; the Morgan County probate court cannot produce her death record even though she died within the margins of the years their records cover.

Thank you.

Re: Jadwin surname

I'm not sure where this JADWIN line began, but Phoebe may have been the daughter of Jesse Jadwin and Rebekah Anderson. Their marriage (26 July 1788) is listed in "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Records" VOL. xii, 1881, page 137, under the heading "Records of the First and Second Presbyterian Churches of New York". They had quite a few children on the 1800, and subsequent Censuses.

I've verified that Jesse and Rebekah had a son named Renselaer, born in Rensellaer NY (1796). He married Lydia Look, and I know of 2 children, Truman Bragg Jadwin (b.1827, MA) and Phoebe Jadwin (b.1830, MA). Was she perhaps named after her aunt, Phobe?

Renselaer was intimately involved with my DALYS who settled in Grafton, Lorain County, Ohio ca. 1833, and in Pittsfield, Lorain, Ohio in 1836. In 1838, Renselaer is witness to John's and James' naturalizations. And in fact, James Daly named his son, "Renselaer L. Daly". I found "Renselaer" to be a "curious" name for an Irish lad, as it sounded Dutch to me. So as I searched for the reason behind this naming, and I found this connection! I don't know if Renselar helped my Dalys get a start in America, but he must have done something very wonderful for such an honor to happen. In addition to being friends with John and James, Renselaer marries John's widow, Mary Almira Daly in November, 1843! (John and James had both died in 1843).

Renselaer Jadwin died around 1871.

Phoebe was married to George Washington Lovejoy. They lived in Grafton, Oh in 1850 where they have a daughter born, and by 1873 when another daughter is born, they lived in Niles MI. In one of the Censuses, it shows Mary Almira as the step-mother, living with them. Truman also lived in Michigan.

Regards,
Trish

Jeremiah Jadwin, Revolutionary War patriot

I will give you what I have found regarding Jeremiah Jadwin of Maryland, later found in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, the father of the Joseph Jadwin who was born in South Carolina, 1782. Comments and corrections welcomed.

This Jeremiah Jadwin, one of about four or five of this name, descendants of John Jadwin, the Quaker, is the link between the Maryland and Missouri Jadwins. His parentage is unproven, possibly he was the son of Jeremiah Jadwin and Anne Skinner.

He was listed in the Maryland Fidelity Census of March 4, 1778 (Queen Anne's Co.) as being of military age.

That same year he apparently followed a well-established migration route from his parish (St. Luke's), Queen Anne's Co., MD, to Anson Co., (later Richmond Co.) North Carolina, and on Nov. 9, 1778 entered a claim for 300 acres of land on the southwest side of Great Shoe Heel Creek, a tributary of the Pee Dee river.
Sources: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jvoran/tho...
SherryJones6391, http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.mar...
Anson Co., NC Land Entries 1778-1795, No. 614.

1779 - Jeremiah Jadwin was a witness in a land transaction in Anson Co., NC, involving Daris and Rachel Burns (Byrn) and John Ricketts. The land was on the west side of the Great Pee Dee River.
Source: Land Entries for Anson Co., NC, Book 7, p. 113

Jeremiah (Jery) Jadwin saw service in the North Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War. The Missouri Jadwin family tradition is that he served for six years, furnished his own horse and rifle, and at the battle of Cowpens, SC, was a sharpshooter in the battalion commanded by Colonel Joseph McDowell, who, along with Colonel Andrew Pickens, served under General Daniel Morgan. The battle took place on Jan. 17, 1781.

He may have married in South Carolina as his son Joseph claimed to have been born there in 1781/2. Family tradition in the allied Van Hooser line is that his wife was named Mary and that she was from Virginia.

1782 - His earlier land claim was registered as No. 44, Entry No. 618, Book No. 64, page 217, from the State of North Carolina, the claim administered by David Love, Entry Officer for Anson and Richmond Cos., in the amount of 400 acres "betwixt Little Shew-heel and Great Shew-heel" in Richmond Co., (formed from Anson Co in 1779).

April 7, 1784, Jeremiah Jadwin's service in the Revolutionary War was documented by means of a Revolutionary War Pay Voucher: "Jery Jadwin allowed nine pounds specie for service, plus 2 years and 2 months interest." Source: Military Receipt Book, pay voucher, No. 1780, State of North Carolina, Salisbury District, Auditor's Office, Lower Board.

The Department of Archives and History, State on North Carolina, "Revolutionary Army Accounts," Volume VI, page 102, Folio 3, contains canceled certificates received for the year 1786. Number 1649, that of J. Jadwin, in the amount of nine pounds. Interest: 1 pound, 3 shillings and 4 pence.
Source: NC State Archives Full Record Print Out (internet) VI 102 3 also Howard Jadwin, "Jadwin," p 208.

He is listed in the NC census of 1785 as:
"Jeremy" Jadwin of Richmond Co., North Carolina:
White Male 21 to 60 - 1
White Male under 21 and above 60 - 3
Females all ages - 3

Records show that he probably had two sons living in 1800, Solomon and Joseph.

August 9, 1787, Richmond Co., NC Register of Deeds Book A, page 49: Jeremiah Jadwin paid 50 shillings per hundred acres for 400 acres in Richmond Co., on the west side of Shoe Heel Creek. (Estimated total payment of 10 pounds.) The land was then legally his. Settlers usually occupied the claimed land while the claim process went forward, and this would appear to be the case with Jeremiah as it is noted that he had already paid the previous owner for improvements. It took nine years for him to complete this land transaction.

Dec. 6,1787, Jeremiah sold this land in North Carolina to Mathew Watson for 50 pounds specie, being represented at the sale by his attorney, John Macalester, indicating that he had already left the area.
Source: Richmond Co., NC Register of Deeds, Book C, p 766.

1789 - Jeremiah Jadwin found in southwest Virginia in the area of the Great Wagon Road to Kentucky and Tennessee near present day Hillsville, Galax and Wytheville, VA. He appears on the Personal Property Tax list "A" for Little Reed Island Creek, Wolf Glade, Cranberry Creek and, Crooked Creek, in Montgomery Co., VA. He was named together with James Cock, Samuel Dodson (Dotson), James Gossett, James Jarreld, David Williams, Thomas Williams, Wm. Williams Sr., Wm. Williams (wag), Wm. Williams (son to TW), and Wm. Williams (W)
Source: Montgomery Co., Virginia - Circa 1790, A Comprehensive Study - Including the 1789 Tax Lists, Transcribed and Edited by Netti Schreiner-Yantis, p. 82.

No listing of this Jadwin family in the 1790 Federal Census.
Note: The Census of 1790 for Virginia, the first Federal Census, was destroyed in the War of 1812 when the British burned the capitol building.

Sept, 27, 1798 Jeremiah Jadwin and Solomon Jadwin witnessed the will of Isam Webb in Patrick Co., VA:
Source: Abstracts of Wills, Inventories and Accounts, Patrick Co., VA 1791 to 1823.

March 26, 1801 Jeremiah Jadwin received a land grant from Governor, State of Virginia, for 167 acres in Patrick Co., VA, "beginning where Daniel Carlan's line cross the Nasty Hill."
Sources: Land Office Grants No. 43, 1799-1800, pp. 510-511 (Reel 109).
Archives at the Library of Virginia, Virginia State Land Office. Appears dated incorrectly in the on-line abstract.

1804 - Solomon Jadwin is listed in Wilson Co., TN, voting records.

1807 - Jeremiah, Solomon and Joseph Jadwin were recorded as being in Captain Rosborough's District of Wilson Co., TN.

1810 - Jeremiah Jadwin was not listed in the Federal Census of 1810.

1813/1815 - A Jeremiah Jedwin (Jadwin) of Wilson Co., TN, was recorded as marrying Elsey Rodgers, bond and license being given June 24, 1813, (per CD-ROM #2, Marriage Index: IL, IN, KY, OH, TN, 1720-1926, Broderbund) or the year 1815, as copied from other documents of Wilson Co., TN, and thus appearing in the IGI/North America. David Williams, perhaps the person of this name living near Jeremiah in Montgomery Co., VA in 1789, and possibly married to a daughter of Isaac Van Hooser, was his bondsman. (Joseph Jadwin, Jeremiah's son, married Mary Van Hooser, another daughter of Isaac).
"Jadwin", Jadwin, Howard, privately printed, p. 217.

The militia service of a "Joseph Jeremy Jadwin" was the basis for Howard Jadwin's successful application for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution, Missouri Chapter. See SAR Patriot Index Edition III (CDPP2210, Progeny Publ., 2002). Observe the name change: Jeremiah Jadwin, the patriot, becomes "Joseph Jeremy" and his date of death is there given as 1820.
Source: https://memberinfo.sar.org/patriotsearch/search.aspx

The addition of the "Joseph" to his name as submitted to the SAR was to conform it to Missouri Jadwin family tradition that the militiaman went by that name. This apparently confused him with his son, Joseph. The present research establishes that from the time he was enumerated in the Maryland Census of 1778 to at least in second marriage in abt. 1815 he went by the name Jeremiah (or Jery) Jadwin.

Dickinson Jadwin or Jadden or Jaddin

I would be interested in any reactions to the following:

Dickinson Jadwin, son of Bartholomew Jadwin and Grace Swift, was born about 1750 in Queen Anne's Co., MD. He was listed in the 1778 Maryland "Fidelity" Census for Caroline Co. MD (formed from QAC) together with Bartholomew Jadwin, who appears to be his brother.

He moved to Allegany County, in western MD, with his brother Bartholomew and is listed in the 1800 Federal Census for that county as having four young females in his household.

Census of 1810 for Allegany Co., Md lists Bartholomew and Thomas Jaddin.

From western Maryland Dickinson appears to have moved to Ohio as there is an entry for a Dickinson Jadden and wife Catherine in the Land Records, Newark Courthouse, Licking Co., Ohio, Aug 12, 1816. This related to the sale to Samuel Musselman of 84 acres for the amount of $718.40. Dickinson made his mark.

Other Jadwins were moving to this area at the time.

The Census of 1820 lists a Dickinson Jadden, Licking Co., Ohio, but the Census Taker noted "Correctness of spelling of name Jadden in doubt."

It seems very likely that the Census Taker in 1820 misspelled Jadwin as Jadden and the latter name was used by subsequent generations as we find:

Land Records, Vol J, p. 247, Newark Courthouse, Licking Co., Ohio, April 13, 1825. Grantees: Catherine Jadden, William Jadden, Rufus Jadden, 117 acres. Dickinson apparently deceased.

1830 US Census, Licking Co., Ohio lists a Catherine Jadden.

November 1835, Land Records Vol EE, page 654, Newark Courthouse, Licking Co, Ohio: Grantees William Jadden and Rufus Jadden.

US Census 1840, Licking Co., Ohio indicates Rufus Jadden living alone.

Much of above taken from Howard Jadwin's book "Jadwin," 1973, privately published.

In 1997, a post by Lynn Proud on RootsWeb cited the Jadden name:
"Elizabeth Banter died 02-May-1877 in Gas City, IN. She was the wife of Gilbert B. JADDEN. Gilbert was born 02-Feb-1838 in Newark, Licking Co., OH. They had a son named Gilbert B. JADDEN."

A rootsweb post: Gilbert B. Jadden of Upland, Indiana attended a reunion of the 89th Regiment Indiana Volunteers in Portland Indiana, on Oct. 10, 1889.

They had 2 children:
1) Wilbur JADDEN b. 11-Jun-1885
2) Eva JADDEN b. 15-Mar-1890

There is an unincorporated town named Jadden in Grant Co., IN.

there are several references involving the same people --the one you refer to is in actual tranfer to John Jadwin 23 November 1658 which was assigned to him by Wm.
You may be perfectly right--that the Jadwins were there prior to 1658 and may have in May of 1668 or thereabouts decided to go back to England and then turn around and come right back returning again in Oct.1658. We know depending upon the weather the trip one way would take several weeks and in the fall and winter times is record to take over 100 days. My record for John is in 1658 and again to Maryland with his Son Bartholomew in 1665 --apparently was too young to travel with the other members of the family in the 1668 trip.

Whether they were there in 1651 or 1658 is OK If your satified with your records and research as valid. All the best to you and your research.

Court Records Court minutes v. 1 (cont.)-2 1618-1706, Family History Library, 35 N West Temple Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84150 USA, 994442.

Chronologically arraigned; pagination irregular.
entries from 25 Sep 1651 (there are a number of entries from this date - the clerk was recording all the activities from the session)
.................
Upon a letter Robert Jadwyn (sent to ths company) from Virginia

peticoninge for and desiringe thereby certen knyves that the Mstrsr & Wardens

had seized being bad and deceiptful wares. This Court ordered that

all the knyves soe seized as bad wares should be sent him wch then

were delivered to his brother in law Mstr. Smith a silke dyer to be sent unto him.

..........
I broke this up on each line on the scanned microfilm, to try and make it easier to read.

'brother in law' can be a very flexible term at this time in history - it could be his wifes' sisters husband; the brother of one of his wifes' sisters husbands, a step-brother (as we would term it).. Francis Clarke may have been a member of the Dyers (at least many of that name were associated with the Dyers - I haven't finished reading through all the available records) so for Robert to have a relation who was a silke dyer seems very reasonable.

The clerk who was recording the entry seems to indicate that the action was taken upon the reading / receipt of the letter that Robert Jadwin sent from Virginia - not that he was present to press his case. This suggests in 1651 that Robert was in Virginia.

Regina

Can you print the direct words from your fine site about Robert & Virginia so I might compare to the record which the Cutlers gave/presented to me at the Autumn Livery Dinner in 1994. This is in regard to whether Robert was actually in Virginia when he wrote the letter or " packing up for--or goinf to Virginia" You site is very good--but I cannot see teh actual words used in the handwritten note --will be glad to send you copies of pages from the book presented to me as will as copies of Booklet provided me on Thomas Jadwyn by the Cutlers

My research in England and Virginia and Maryland as well as Delaware cannot find any reference to the true name of Jadwins or Jadwyns being in Virginia before 1658 except Thomas when attending the Jamesdown Meetings 1618-1619 and other dates up to 1624. Roberts son John show the purchase in November 1658 or the next month after teh Family arrive in October 1658. It is obvious the Cutlers din't like son Robert and at my meeting with them made this clear! Thanks for any help. Jadbrad@embarqmail.com

Hi - I do have an exact image from the microfilm of Cutlers Company records which cites that Robert Jadwin is 'now in Virgina' and that the knives are to be delivered to his brother-in-law Mr Smythe a silk dyer - the manuscript is a little hard to read but you can see it on my website. At least at the time of the entry in the Cutler records, the Masters and Wardens believed he had a brother in law who was a silk dyer.

Mr Bradford:

Many thanks for that outstanding submission. I am really trying to pin everything down before my battery runs down completely. With your help, I now have you as the son of Mr. Bradford and Mary Elizabeth Jadwin, she being the daughter of Elizabeth Howard and Francis Monroe Jadwin.

That could make you a rather close relative of Lisa Jadwin who has a very nice Jadwin web page.

Now, turning back the clock, I am looking at the date of the family's immigration to the Virginia Colony. What I see in my notes is this:

"While the precise date (or dates) of arrival of the Jadwin's is not known, there is documentary evidence from the Cutlers Company that Robert Jadwyn was in Virginia before Sept. 25, 1651, as in the Company's records of that date he was referred to as "now of Virginia", and that he had sent a letter to the Company "peticoninge for and desiringe thereby certen knyves that the Mr (Master) & Wardens had seized being bad and deceiptful wares." The Court ordered "that all the knyves soe seized as bad wares should be sent him wch then was delivered to his brother-in-law, Mr. Smyth, a silke dyer to be sent unto him."

(I agree with you that the Mr. Smyth mentioned does not appear to to me to be a known brother-in-law of Robert Jadwin, but it is possible that he was related through some connection from the second marriage of his father, no?)

You have a different reading of this material as it relates to the date of arrival.

The first record I have found of the Jadwins in Virginia is a land transaction of 1656 in which Jonathan Jadwin served as a witness. "May 1656 (sic). Ger. Dodson attorney of Mr. Wm. Botham do authorize my lo: friends Mr John Dodman or Mr. Wm Webb my attorneys to acknowledge the sale of land which I assigned over to Richard Heabeard with the pattent. Signed: Ger. (Gervess) Dodson; Witness: Jonathan Jedwen.
Source: John Frederick Dorman, "Westmoreland Co., VA Records, 1658-1661."

According to C.C. Jadwin, one of the family, John Jadwin, arrived in Virginia as a Quaker. The Quaker movement materialized in London about 1654 or 1655, the first recorded Quaker I have found arriving in the Virginia Colony in 1655. (Source: Worrall, Jay, Jr, "The Friendly Virginians," Iberian Publishing Co.)

These dates would support the conclusion that John Jadwin, his brother and mother...if they traveled as a group...would have arrived in Virginia between about 1655, with the appearance of the Quakers in Virginia and 1656, the date of the land transaction involving Johnathan Jadwin.

In any case, by 1658 the Jadwin family was in the Virginia Colony. This has been established by the Oct. 6,1658 headright claim made by Richard White, Cooper; Evan Davis and Samuel L. Mann for twenty persons including six Jadwins as follows: Robert Jadwin; Sisly Jadwin; Robert Jadwin, Snr; Jno Jadwin; Jonathan Jadwin; Jeremy Jadwin.

It should be noted a headright claims does not establish a date of arrival. It represents the date a claim is made, and it is possible that the Jadwins did not arrived at the same time.

What this record does show is that the six had emigrated by 1658 and that the headright claimants grouped them together, along with 14 other persons, when their claim was submitted.
Let me start with the inquiry on Francis--his name comes down from Robert's (1586-1658) marraige to Cicily Clark daughter of Sir Francis Clark. Francis(1857-1926)1st married Mary Blaney in perry County Ohio and they lived with his father Thomas(in Census records of 1880). Mary divorced & remarried a Francis Steadman and took the two boys to Hartford Arkansas(See census 1900/1910) Geo.Thomas moved to Nowata Cherokee Nation territory prior to his move to California---Henry Francis also moved to California.

Francis(Frank 1857-1926) was my Grandfather and 2nd married Elizabeth howard--spelled "Hard" in marriage certificate as the name was pronounce "Hard" . The daughter of Frank & Elizabeth was Mary Elizabeth Jadwin--my mother. Frank married a third time to Lydia Thompson (See 1910&1920 census Zanesville Ohio) child of this marriage was Francis Marion born 1912)

Robert's(1586-1658) problems with the Cutlers was around the time of his step-mothers illnes/death in 1637 time frame. He was arrested for debt whcih carried over into the Cutlers--An indemnity or counterbond made by Robert & Wm. Sharrow(brother in Law) on 9th of August 1638 to save the company harmless from the payment.Court discharged the case. Robert seems wasnot in the clerks position between 1637-1640 and was reverted to the position by the court and suigned the lst Culter records 10 December 1641.The second issue with Robert & the Cutlers was when Robert went to Court to have knives returned to him that Cutlers had seized as bad wares.Based upon his letter of petition to the Cutlers 25 September 1651 which they read. Later than the 1651 date the court ordered the return of the knives. The Cutlers notes indicated he had "retired or packed off the Virgina" and delivered the knives to his brother in law Mr. Smith--Robert had no brother in law named Smith nor do the notes of the Cutlers say Robert was in facat in Virginia and is pure speculation by some. He may have been getting things in order to go to Virginia --but here is no data that he arrived in Virginia prior to 1658 and the immigrant data(Ship records) give positive proof of his arriveal in October of 1658 and he died shortly thereafter. His sons John, Jeremiah, Jonnathan and wife Cicley are in the Virginia records thereafter. His son Francis was apparently deceased unless Jonathan was the middle name for Francis.CC Jadwins book and my reseach while in England, the religious safety/issues at athe time would indicated Jedburgh as a safe haven at the time and is just across the border in Scotland.
All for now--hope it helps ---can send you pages 174 and 175 of Cutlers book if you would like---jadbrad@embarqmail.com

Hello Bradford. I have my notes before me now and see two sons for Francis Jadwin of Perry Co., Ohio: George Thomas and Harry Francis, no daughter. Could you fill in the blanks?

Tell us more about the Jedburgh, Scotland part. Was that from CC Jadwin's research?

From the meeting with the Cutlers, did you learn anything about the troubles Robert Jadwin, the immigrant, had when he was Clerk of the Cutlers' Company?

And you wrote earlier you had a listing on the ship that brought the family (or part of it) to Virginia. That is very interesting. Can you give us all you have on that?

My research about your line indicates that Bartholomew's brother Dickinson Jadwin's descendants spelled the name as Jadden in Licking Co., Ohio and later moved to Indiana. There it appears they founded the unincorporated town of Jadden in Grant Co.

What do you make of that?
Regards.
Bob Ballantyne aka JadwinB

My GGG Grandparents were Joseph JADWIN (1782 -1858) and Mary VAN HOOSER (ca 1788 or 9, Montgomery CO, VA - Nov 1854 (56?), MO). They married 26 July 1806. Mary’s parents were Isaac VAN HOOSER (1762-1831) and Margaret HUFFMAN / HOFFMAN. I know a lot about the Van Hooser line (it has two US presidents in it) but nothing about the Hoffmans.

Mary and Joseph Jadwin's Children:
Margaret (ca1811-1848)
Winchester (ca1813-<1850)
Alexander (1815-1894)
Mary Ann (ca1820-<1861)
Elizabeth C. (ca1822-<1889)
Valentine “Tine” (1824-1886)
Martin Carrol (1826-1898)

Below are some references I have regarding “a” Joseph Jadwin but I do not know if they all pertain to “my” Joseph:

- Wilson County TN Tax list for 1807 has three Jadwins: Jeremiah, Solomon, and Joseph.

- Joseph Jadwin was commissioned a Lieutenant in the TN 17th Regiment on 28 Sep 1811 (a Wilson County Regiment as of 26 Oct 1799). “My” Joseph Jadwin would have been about age 29.

- Joseph Jadwin was in the 1820 census of Warren Co, TN; in 1840 census of DeKalb Co TN; in 1850 census of Texas Co, MO.

I would love to exchange data and am especially looking for information about the Hoffmans and about Joseph Jadwin’s ancestry.
The reason I asked about sources for the parents of David and Jeremiah Jadwin was that the research I did years ago indicated that the father (Jeremiah), married to Rachel Davis, was married later to an Anne Skinner and in his will he cited a third wife, Maabel. In the absence of any firm evidence, I have cited the first wife as the mother, mentioning the uncertainty in notes.
Thanks a million for your reply. I am less active as a researcher than I used to be. My Jadwin connection is through the Jeremiah who appears after the Revolutionary War in NC, gets a land grant in TN for his service in the NC Militia and whose descendants went on to Missouri in the 1840's. I keep trying to fill in the gaps for this Jeremiah covering his movements from Maryland to NC.

There was a Jeremiah Jadwin who married Rachel
Davis, 1749 in Queen Anne's county, MD, who is a descendant of the John Jadwin (Quaker), son of Robert, the immigrant. I think this Jeremiah and Rachel Jadwin may have been the parents of a Jeremiah and David Jadwin who are listed in Chester Hundred, Queen Anne's County, MD, Military Census of 1778 as being of military age.

These two boys, Jeremiah and David, would have been very young men in Maryland, probably not married and owning no property, thereby leaving no paper trail except for the listing in the military census.

One family tradition among the Pennsylvania Jadwins is that two cousins went off to war and were never heard from again.

The late Howard Jadwin (of the Missouri branch) published his work on this family about 40 years ago and Regina Barry has some excellent material available on her web site.

But to date, no one has been able to cover the jump from MD to NC.

Best regards and congratulations on your work. That part about Jedburgh, Scotland, was new to me, and is very interesting. I had read someplace that the family moved several times to avoid religious persecution, being Church of England (except for Quaker John.

PS: For Regina Barry's web site try:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rbarry4145/

And scroll down to the "English and Virginia Families".

Hi-

The first Jeremiah Jadwin ws the son of Robert who brought with him the family in 1658 and he is listed on the Passenger list-( some say the Jadwins came over in 1651 in the reference to the Cutlers---I have the book given to me by the Cutlers and the Knives involved in the dispute was sent to them in Jedburgh Scotland in 1651)-- -he served on the bench with Geo. washingtons grandfather and never marrried nor left children. He left his estate to Bartholomew Jadwin son of John. Bartholomew had one son which is the second by the name of Jeremiah born 1683 and died 1727 and married Isabel Harrison.Jeremiahs children were Bartholomew, Jeremiah and Ann. I believe this Jeremiah or the third by this name (1705--1773)had a son who moved to Tennessee by the name of Jeremiah--I will check my sources and see if I can make the right determination. Jeremiah (1705--1773) records indicate he had his brother Bartholomew sell some land at his death in Queen Annes County Maryland. Yes my Bartholomew moved to Allegany county Maryland and then his sons Thomas and Dickenson move to Ohio hope this is of some help--Stay in tough---Richard Bartholomew Bradford--wonder where the middle name came from
jadbrad@embarqmail.com

Going back in your line to Jeremiah, it appears that he had two sons, (1)Bartholomew, your ancestor, whose line I think went to western Maryland after the Revolutionary War, and (2) Jeremiah, brother to Bartholomew.

Do you have any information relating to Jeremiah and his descendants?

Regards, Bob Ballantyne

I'm working on identifying this Robert - he's not the one who 1674 (father of Jane and Sisley) .. is he the brother of Jane and Sisley?

I'm wokring on identifying this Robert Jadwin - is he the brother of Sisley and Jane, and son of Robert d 1674? Or a more distant relative - perhaps through Johnathan?

VA, Westmoreland Co.
