Hi Joan,
Would you by chance have any connections to the Bjerk family? My Great-Aunt Olive Swartz-Bjerk (who married my Great-Uncle Edvert Pedar Bjerk of Calumet, MI around 1930 or so), had a sister Evelyn M. Swartz-Jaehnig (1908-1997), who married Gordon Jaehnig (1903-1998).
I'm actually looking for info on Olive, Evelyn & their sister Helen.
I know this is a shot in the dark, but thought it was worth a try.
Thank you! Mary Signkat@yahoo.com

Hi Drew-

Clark William (Pete) Jaehnig was my father. His mother was Hazel Viola Hawkins, his father was Clark Edward Jaehnig, and yes he was alternately known as Edward Clark - I believe he was named after his uncle Edward (Dr. Bruno's son that died age 23) and for the Clark family (good friends). I have not been able (yet) to definitely determine who was Clark Edward's father. Herman B. was listed as father on one census (not sure which one at the moment).

At any rate, Herman B, Edward and Fanny all died young, and Edward Clark was raised by Dr. Bruno and May, my father told me that his father, Edward Clark Jaehnig, was legally adopted by Dr. Bruno, hence the census listings as grandson and son.

As for Emma Jaehnig, I don't have any reason to believe that she was illegitimate. Joan has a copy of her birth certificate listing Moritz and (Christine) Amalie as her parents. Amalie was only 37 when she was born, and her last child born before Emma was H Jaehnig (male) born in 1849. M Jaehnig (female born 1843) and H Jaehnig (male born 1849) both died in Sheboygan shortly after they immigrated. It would be natural to have another child, especially after they were settled in Ontonagon. Emma was married 26 Dec 1871, gave birth to daughter Emma Nov 1872, died 9 Dec 1872.

Emma Crawford was raised by Moritz and Amalie, and is listed in the census' as living with them in Red Wing in 1875, and with Amalie (after Moritz died) in 1880, and again at age 13 with Mars (?) Jaehnig in 1885. I lose her after that. By the 1890 census she may have married.

Hope that clears things up a little!

Ann (Jaehnig) Haeckl

So this branch of the family has always confused me....Clark W. Jaehnig is the son of Clark Edward Jaehnig and Hazel Viola Hawkins?

Clark Edward being the son of Herman B Jaehnig with spouse or partner unknown? and he in turn is the son of Bruno and May Mary Messick?

That is how I understand the flow.

Where it got confusing is the records indicate an Edward Clark and Clark Edward alternately with the same Birth date, but list the Bruno as either Parent or Grandparent.

I assumed based on age Grandparent was correct and made a guess the Clark Edward was the correct order.

Is that what you understand?

The Jaehnig's (Jähnig's or Jänig's) must have come over in shifts.

I'm currently traced my branch of the Jaehnig Family to Moritz and Christine who came over in 1850 from leipzig.

Moritz was born in 1815. I am at all stop trying to find out if Moritz had siblings or what his parents names were.

C

Vivian, Sanford Vivian and John Vivian?

Am I Missing one?

Emma Married B.F. Crawford and had a daughter also named Emma. She died tragically at 19.

I believe she was illegitimate as Christine Amalie (Moritz's Wife) was 46 at the time of her birth, yet she still made the papers as a Jaehnig.

Wow, there is actually quite a bit of information about Jaehnig's on here. I started looking for information about Jaehnig's because I want to get a tattoo that represents us. I have a celtic knot to represent my paternal grandmother and a pancreatic cancer ribbon to represent my maternal grandpa, so all I need now is something to Represent my Grandpa Frederick Jaehnig. I was reading a lot of Jaehnig's are traced back to Arno Jaehnig, the weird thing is I have never heard of him but I think my Grandpa's middle name is Arno. I would love to know more about the family but all I know is my grandpa came from a pretty big family in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. His father's name was Benjamin Jaehnig and one of his brothers name is Irwin (Mort) Jaehnig.

Thank you so much for you info. I have been researching for 50 years. I am a daughter of Jack Vivian, who is a Jaehnig by his mother Katherine Jaehnig, bor 1873 of Arno Jaehnig and Adelaide Loranger. I had corresponded with Clark and one of his sons and still can't figure out the connection, as Dr. Bruno and Mary Mussick married 27 Jan 1872, had Herman Bruno born 1873, George Edward born 1875 and possibly Fanny born 1877.. Both boys were sickly and died single in 1902 and 1898. There was a daughter born in Rockland, Ontonagon, MI that might have been Moritz's child by Barbara Burke, he name was Emma. Please correspond to me directly at Jleve10494@aol.com. I have the obits for Bruno, George, Herman but would appreciate anything that you might have concerning this family. I have pictures of the Jaehnigs of Arno and Adelaide.
Hi dear long lost cousin Joan!

Bruno and Arno were brothers from Redwing, Mn, but came over from Dresden Germany with their parents in the mid 1800's. Bruno was a doctor and stayed in Redwing until his death. My father, Clark W. Jaehnig grew up in Redwing, and Minneapolis, then moved to California during WWII. He was the last of the "Bruno Jaehnigs", but had two sons, (my brothers) Dave Jaehnig of Rancho Bernardo California (three sons, James, Joseph and Dave Jr. Jaehnig), and Tom Jaehnig of Lake Elsinore, California (two sons, Justin Jaehnig - currently serving on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, father of two children, and Tycin Jaehnig of Riverside).
I took a reunion trip with my father to Redwing some years ago and looked up the family history in the library in Redwing. Found gravesites and family ties to Messick. Arno evidently moved to southern Michigan (?) my memory fails me here, but he had many (7?) children who have evidently been healthy and prolific. Most every Jaehnig I have ever run across can be traced back to Arno. I have copies of all of the obituaries etc that we dug up on our trip, but it is currently packed up in storage. I hope to be emptying the storage unit this summer and will mail you copies of everything I find if you wish.

My paternal grandmother was Johanna Gertrude Jänig from Mittweida, Saxony, Germany. Her father was Adolph Jänig and mother was Pauline Wuester. There were 8 children (four boys and four girls) altogether of which three were in the U.S. (Puyallup Valley, Washington State). I know that the others were in Germany. One of the females was in the U.S. and returned prior to WWI to claim an inheritance. I don't know what happened to the rest. I'm interested if anyone has information of this surname from the Saxony region.

Wendy Adams
Well I'm a Michigan Jaehnig Father raised in Calumet City was the son of Evelynn and Gordon Jaehnig later of Clair Mishigan.

Turns out it's a bit more complicated than that. He's actually the son of Eleanor Jaehnig Gordon Jaehnig's sister but those were the times.

-Drew

That's odd. My father's middle name was Gordon. Howard Gordon Jaehnig. I think his mother's father's first name was Gordon. I am looking for Michigan Jaehnigs who came from the Reed City and Baldwin area. I am also looking for the Schmidts also from the Reed City, Mi area.

I am the son of David and Roslynn Jaehnig, David being Deceased and my mother remarried. His father being Gordon and Evelynn Jaehnig, although it appears he was actually the son of his Aunt Eleanor Jaehnig who evidently never married and had my father out of wedlock. Hence her brother took over the rearing. Not sure who their parents were, any help here would be useful.
