Hi,
A Rosalie Obstfelder is my great-great grandmother on my father's line. This information is the best I know from family memory and documents. I have not been able to travel to Thuringen to learn more or to double check.

Rosalie Obstfelder was born in Allersdorf on 5, May, 1857. She married Robert Jahn of Cursdorf (21, September, 1857-5, February, 1937) on 31, August, 1879. They lived in Cursdorf. Rosalie died in September 1943, Cursdorf.

Rosalie had a sister Wilhelmine (unknown dates).

Rosalie and Robert had many children:
Maria Jahn my great grandmother (22, November 1888- 1937, immigrated to the USA in 1906)
Olga Jahn (b 15, January, 1891)
Paul Jahn (b 14, October, 1886)
Elsa Jahn (25, October 1884)
Emmy Jahn (b 13, September, 1882)
Angnes Jahn (b 22, December, 1877)
Minna Jahn (8, October 1880- 15, February, 1968 in USA)
Erna Jahn (b 10, February 1895)
Melanny Jahn (b 5 November 1896)

best,
Adam Heinrich

Suzi,

I am sorry, I have no info on Rosalie. I only came upon info re. her from another tree. It may be that she does not belong on my tree at all. I have been able to get some good info from Evangelical pastors in the towns where an ancestor lived. They usually want about 40 Euros an hour for their efforts. They are usually not difficult to find with an internet search for Evangelische Kirche in (name of town). If you do not know German then just try it in English as they may know English. Paypal will send 100 euros for about $135 which includes a fee of about $5.
Good Luck!
Ron

Would you have any other information about Rosalie Obstfelder? My great grandfather, Karl Friedrich Robert Obstfelder was born near Unterweissbach, Germany which is near Allersdorf. I know that they lived in Obstfeldersmiede and that his father was the blacksmith in the town. He came here in 1866. I am wondering if your Rosalie, and my Great grandfather could have been relatives. This is all the information I have and I really don't know where else to look.

Thanks for any help.

Suzi

I will help in any way I can even if it means getting you in contact with the family member who has been doing most of the research. I do know that Martha had 3 children and she is deceased and buried at a very old cemetery near McPherson, Kansas with her father and a few of her siblings. I know for sure one sister had a farm near Wichita or McPherson because my mom and her sisters always talk about going out there as kids. Also, one other sister also died very young. If you would like you can e-mail me at the user name above at yahoo.com. I don't have a membership anymore so I can't contact you directly through ancestry.

I have been working on the Jahn Family and would like to knew where some of Martha (Jahn) Hoffman brother and sisters ended up. I have some guesses, but I don't know for sure. My grandma always talked about her Uncle Jake where he lived and his family. How some of the family added a s after Jahn. Her uncle George in Ohio changed the J to a Y.
I have a letter written by Martha to my grandma Caroline when Martha had just turned 16 years old. Young and so full of life. If you can help the would be wonderful. If you can't thank you for your time.
Here is some info I found on the family from another poster.

Looking for information on ancestors of Frank Jahn, born in Germany 1854, immigrated to Sebastepol area. Don't have year of immigration or birthplace. Children of Frank Jahn were: Herman, John (my father), Mary, Emma, William, Alex, Edith, Minnie, Annie & Amelia. John married Helena Bloedow (my mother). Frank Jahn died in Eganville 1932. Grandfather on the Bloedow side was William born in Kleinseller, Germany 1857. Children of William and wife Matilda Verch were John, Helena (my mother) Emma and Ottilie. Second marriage to Marie Ristau with children: Martha, Hannah, Dorthea, Maria Ann and Frederick. William Bloedow died 1943 in Lyndock/Killaloe. Any information on either the Jahn or Bloedow ancestors would be appreciated.

BTW -- you may want to add the spelling "Hafermann" to your list of spelling variations for your Carolina Pagelsdorf (d. 1907), because that's what the German newspapers listed as her maiden name (which is not any indeication of correctness).

I've replied elsewhere to another version of this Pagelsdorf posting, but there are matches to more of these names found in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950). The index remains available to browse through 2012 at the Salzmann Library in suburban Milwaukee. Entries are verified via email.

I'm wondering where your "Heaffemann" spelling came from. Even Häffemann or Haeffemann is not a typical variation for Haffemann Haffeman Hafemann or Hafeman.

Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007 ...

June: I drafted most of a reply but it 'disappeared'. If you now receive 2 replies, I apologize for any confusion. I am still uncertain why this posting system refuses to recognize my formatting but instead creates one long paragraph.

It looks like you only have one ancestor, Maria Schnell, from Giesel. The marriage records in Giesel start in 1720 and the baptismal records start in 1731. The pre-1831 records for Niederkalbach and Eichenreid should be with the Flieden church records. Those records start in 1645. There were earlier records in Flieden which were destroyed in a fire in 1645 caused by a roving group of bandits, murderers and rapists. The first church was started in Flieden in the ninth century. Keep in mind that Neuhof sits extremely close to the Roman Road heading east. Ellers was a very small village near Neuhof, which was absorbed long ago into Neuhof. The church records in Neuhof start in 1686.

The oldest known Catholic church records are in the Fulda city parish, which begin in 1586. Those records are not extremely helpful, because people did not always travel all the way to that church.

I have a lot of records from Flieden and Neuhof which I have transcribed and copied in multiple trips to the archives in Fulda, and I should be able to help you. However I have been very busy at my office and I have plans to visit my children on two upcoming weekends. By the way, not all of the Spahns were Evangelisch-some were Catholic. One of my early ancestors is a Spahn. Basically, two of my great-grandparents were born in villages in the Flieden in the 1840s.

Not all of the names I listed in the response to Stefan are from my ancestors. Rather, those were the Fliedener-type names of people in Mucsi. I should mention that some of the early records do use the spelling as 'Fierle', though the accepted spelling in the Flieden area is now 'Firle'.

Anyway, the map shows the Giesel now seems to be surrounded by woodland, but is just due north of Neuhof and Rommerz (where some of my ancestors are from). I will start paying more attention to the Neuhof records to watch for Giesel. I also have relatives to my ancestors in Hauswurz and Hosenfeld, just west, south-west of Giesel. Giesel is due west of the town of Johannesberg, which has a prominent church and records starting in 1634. There is a fair chance that the pre-1731 Gieselers went to church in Johannesberg.

Now a couple of questions for you: when they first arrived many Fuldaers clustered together in various towns-near people that they already knew. Was there much of a Hessen settlement in Harrison County, Indiana? I gather that you still live in that area. I am curious whether any more Fliedeners settled there.

One last comment: It looks like a lot of us from the Fuldatal are carrying some rather ancient Norman DNA from Scandinavia. The Fuldatal is located on what is not only the best East-West overland invasion route (used by Napoleon on his way to Moscow), but also the best north-south overland invasion route, probably last used by Sweden when it intervened in the Thirty Years War in 1630.

Good to hear from you, and I am sure that we will be communicating further.

Hi Gary
interesting list of names. 1712 is about the earliest Catholic records from Fulda
my husband's gggrandfather Hartman Jahn came from Giesel he left there with Anna maria Spahn(an Evangelist) their marriage was forbidden by both families. They ended up in Harrison Co., Indiana. Supposedly came in 1845, stopped briefly in Ohio, then spent a few years in Louisville KY, where he was a mason. he died about 1868 in Indiana, no cemetery, the markers in the Catholic cemetery were distroyed by a developer. His wife and children moved on to Chippewa county Minnesota after his death.
Anyway
Hartman was born 14 June 1813 in Giesel
his parents were Johannes Jahn(9 June 1776 Giesel) and Anna Maria Fierle (12 Sep 1770) Niederkalbach
her parents were Heinrich Fierle and Anna Maria Herbert of Eichenried

Johannes's parents were
Johannes Jahn 16 May 1751 Neuhof &Maria Schnell 24 Nov 1753 Giesel
johannes's parents were
Nicolaus Jahn 20 June 1720 Ellers and Barbara Müller 30 Aug 1721 Ellers Neuhof

Nicolaus's parents were
Johannes Jahn born ?
married 30 Aug 1712 in Ellers
to Anna Gress b??
I Would love to think there are earlier records out there.
June

Steve: (Looks like the software omits my paragraphing, and makes the message harder to read). Really great to hear from you. Just a few initial responses: I have been developing a good record of the info contained in the oldest Catholic churches in Flieden and Neuhof, in the Fuldatal. These records generally go back to the mid 17th century. I am making another trip in November to the archives for the Fulda diocese. During my prior research, I have come across quite a few Jahns. Here in Pittsburgh, we have a few Jahn families who are descended from the Fuldatal. In Wheeling W.Va., some Fliedener Jahns also settled, though most in Wheeling now use the spelling of "Yahn". Gersfeld is about 26 km from Neuhof (although Hettenhausen is only about 11 km from Eichenzell). Gersfeld is part of the modern Fulda diocese, but its records only begin in 1821. Hettenhausen apparently did not have its own church (or was Evangelisch). It is necessary to study the map and figure out which older church would have been attended by residents of Gersfeld and Hettenhausen before 1821 (or which older church, before 1821, sent a priest to ride the circuit to those towns and keep records). If we can figure that out, then I can take a look for Johann's birth about 1700 in that older church records, during my next visit. Of course, Gersfeld is close enough to the Hessen/Bayern border that there is no guarantee that the church used before 1821 is in the Fulda diocese.
A few more comments. I have noticed the name of Mucsi elsewhere, and I will try to recall where that was. I do have a publication in German from the Marburg state archives which mentions movements of Fuldaers to that part of Hungary. I think that book mentioned Mucsi. My impression is that some went to Hungary not just for land, but due to other social issues. For example, I recall a story of a Catholic who wanted to marry a Lutheran in Neuhof, but due to the social ostracism, the two moved to a German settlement in Hungary and quietly married without mentioning their different religious backgrounds. I'll bet that couple would be hard to trace.
Looking at your transcriptions of the war memorials, I can definitely state that in addition to Jahn, the other surnames from the Fuldatal are Ruppert, Firle, Hartung, Lotz, Seifert and Hohmann. Of course, the Müller and Weber names could have come from Fuldatal, or almost anywhere else in the German speaking world. I have a Firle in my Fliedener ancestry. The Lotz name appears often in Neuhof and Hauswurz. One of my third cousins, a Flieden native, is married to a person from the Lotz family. The war memorials in the Fuldatal not only show some deceased with my own name, but it looks like the greater Lotz family supplied many soldiers who never returned.
Your info is fascinating. I never heard of the "Stifoller" name. (One old family name in Fuldatal is Föller.) I have met a few of the re-settled Volksdeutsch, but I did not know about the origin of the people re-settled in Kassel. If you have any more information, I would love to learn about it. Jahns and Musci..The conventional wisdom was that most of the Fuldaers who went to Hungary left too early to leave behind any record, and it would be great to find a few in the Bistumsarchiv Fulda.
I started this research in 1975 after visiting Fuldatal for the first time, and learning that the old German section of the city of Pittsburgh was settled mostly by people from those Hessen towns. Although some of the Fuldaers went directly to Wisconsin and West Virginia, most initially settled here. Later some did move on, and I am aware of some Fuldaers who established sizeable farms in southern Illinois. I have really enjoyed this study in population movements, and everyone needs to have some interests away from work. Again, great to hear from you.
Gary Gaertner from Pittsburgh. garygaertner@gmail.com

My name is Stefan Jahn and my family is from Mucsi. Johann Jahn came in 1718 to Mucsi and was listed in 1720 as one of
three German Families, along with 4 Hungarian and 4 Slavic
families. The Slavs (Serbs) were Shepherds and were moved out
to make way for farmers from the Fuldatal, who would benefit the landlord more. Johann Jahn came from Hettenhausen/Gersfeld with his wife Maria Rebecca. The Jahns
prospered in Mucsi and later my great grandfather Ulrich Jahn
ended up in Csibrák, a neighboring village. The people in Mucsi were called Stifollers because they came from Stift Fulda (Bishopric of Fulda) The Fulda farmers also landed up
in Zavod, which is also close to Mucsi. When I visited Mucsi and Csibrak in 2010, I found a WWII memorial with several Jahns listed. On the Church (Sankt Stefan) there were 2 more Jahns who died in WWI. The people of Csibrak
were settled around the city of Kassel, which is in the Fulda valley so our Jahns ended up very close to the area
where they came from in 1718.

Steve Jahn from San Diego miramesares@juno.com

I'm new to this, Aunt Maggie was one of my favorites. In the early 50's my father William Christian and I would help them pull corn. She told the story of Dr. Jahn freely and proudly. He interned himself shortly after his first wife died of yellow fever. Aunt Maggie remembered when she was a child, there was another yellow fever epidemic and the farmers owjld fill a wagon with hay as they carried Doctor Jahn from farm to farm. sincn he got little or no sleep at the farms, he would sleep in the wagon as he travelled. Daddy showed me the location of Doctor Jahn's old farm. It is about 2 miles south of Aunt Maggies on a beautiful hill with a large Oak. The house is long gone.

Thank you for your reply.
I have found my Hartman. I would be very much interested in any connection between your Jahn's and mine.
My Hartman Jahn was Catholic-b. 14 June 1813 in Giesel
wife Anna Maria Spahn b. 26 Dec 1822(Anna Maria was NOT Catholic) I believe they were disowned by both families, thus their immigration to America. I recently learned that Hartman had an older brother who was living in Louisville, KY. Hartman first stoped briefly in Ohio, then spent several years working as a mason in Louiseville. They appear in Harrison county, Indiana in 1860, farmers. Hartman died about 1868 and the family moved to Minnesota.
Hartman's parents:
Johannes Jahn(b. 9 June 1776-Giesel) m. Anna Maria Fierle
Johannes Jahn (b. 16 May 1751-Neuhof) m. Maria Eliz. Schnell
Nicolaus Jahn (b. 20 June 1720-Ellers) m. Barbara Müller
Johannes Jahn (b. abt 1695?) m. Anna Gress on 30 Aug 1712 in Ellers
there are no more Catholic records prior to this in the Fulda archives
If you have Jahn's from the Fulda area, they probably are connected somewhere along the line.
Good Luck
June

I have the book which you identify in your query. I just noticed your inquiry from 2002. Assuming you are still interested, I can tell you the following. First, the book can still be purchased from the state archives in Marburg. I wish that more books had been produced for other decades. I have checked the book. One Hartmann Jahn is listed. He is listed as traveling with Anna Maria Jahn. The annotation is uncertain as to whether the spelling is Jahn or Spahn. Both family names appear in Hessen, and the annotator speculates that Spahn was the wife's maiden name. Hartmann Jahn is listed as last residing in Giesel. This is a small city in Hessen, and Giesel is listed in the 1840s as then still part of the district of Fulda. He was headed for America with 100 Gulden. Personally, I am a little surprised to see a Jahn from Giesel, as the name appears more often in towns much closer to Fulda. Giesel is now a university town, and has been so, for a while. I have Jahns in my extended family from the district of Fulda. I am heading to Germany in October to do a little research. I will spend one day in the civil archives in Marburg. Let me know if you have a specific thing you would like to look into. I can make no promises, but if I have the chance I will check into it. Now I have a question for you. Where did Hartmann Jahn settle in the U.S.? I would be interested in info about Hartmann and his family, as I have spent a lot of years looking into Hessian emigrants and I would like to know if there is any connection with my branch of the Jahn family. By the way, I have also looked at records in Wheeling. One of the early settlers there changed the name to 'Yahn'. Anyway, I hope that this info is helpful. Happy hunting.

Nicol Caspar Jahn

I have just learned a name that goes back one generation farther than any I had before. His name is Nicol Caspar Jahn, probably born in Meuselbach (Thuringia) in the late 1700s, died before 1828. Has anyone heard of this person and his descendants?

William F. Jahn 1837-1920

I'm looking for information on the parents of William F. Jahn. William was born in Germany and emigrated to the USA in 1856 (according to census records). He lived and died in Erin County, Michigan. There was some anecdotal evidence that suggest his fathers name is Frederick but nothing to substantiate that.
You can post here or contact me via e-mail at jdfin367@gmail.com.
Thanks for any assistance you may be able to offer.
Jeff

Looking for info on Emma Yohn, and husband William Henry Boyd (married probably in 1890's, in Carolinas or Georgia?). William Henry Boyd was killed in accident (working on railroad?) around 1900. Emma remarried in Florida, per family history, but don't know name of second husband. Can find NO information on either of them.

There were Jahn's living in Ohio prior to 1880 besides Margaret and the other name you mentioned. Our Jahn's settled in Grove City, Jackson Twp, OH about 1852. Our relative was able to get church records and information. If you want more info please e-mail me. Your Jahn's maybe different family relations. We do not have any Herman's that I have found. Are you looking in the Columbus Oh area? I have some death certificates relating to our family.

Jahn in LaCrosse Wisconsin

Hi,

I'm looking for information on descendants and ancestors of Mathias and Freda Jahn. Here's what I know...

My great grandfather was Mathias (alias Walter, Matt) Jahn, born 20 Feb 1864, Germany, died 3 Jul 1931, married abt 1885. He lived and died in LaCrosse, obituary, 07/5/1931, La Crosse Tribune page 5 (I don't have a copy, just a reference). I don't have his burial location.

The person that I have the most trouble with is Mathias' spouse. She went by the name of Freda, which is short for Friederika. She was born in Germany, possibly on 12 Dec 1867. She died 27 Feb 1955, Obituary 02/28/1955 in La Crosse Tribune page 2 (I don't have a copy, only a reference). I'm unclear what Freda's last name was. Some possibilities are: Haaik, Haack, and Slack. I also don't know who her parents were, or her brothers/sisters. I don't have here burial location.

Matt and Freda's children are:

1) Minnie M. Jahn, Nov 19 1884 (Germany) to Jan 13 1919. She marries Louis Dell. Their children are Dorthy, Norrine, Emily, and William.

2) Martha Jahn, Jun 1 1887 (Germany) to Mar 18 1971. She marries Fred Fibeger. They have one child, Fred (Freddie).

3) Herman Jahn, Mar 29 1891 to Oct 8 1950. He marries Rena ?. They have one child, Elaine.

4) Annie Jahn, Dec 15 1894 to May 30 1917.

5) Walter Jahn Mar 13 1899 to Dec 13 1968. He marries Amelia Tschirgi and they have seven children, Helen, Murella, Walter, Adele, Richard, Eugene, and Anne. Helen is my mom. I have Walter's, and Amelia's obituaries.

6) Frieda Jahn, Feb 15 1909 to Mar 1 1909.

Hi, Wolfgang-
I've taken over the research for my father, Lou. Thanks for the paperwork, but this isn't our ancestor.

I have our Freideman's emigration records; he came over in 1859, I have his name and occupation on the ship's manifest, and he was granted citizenship in 1866, which is consistent with the 5 year residency requirement.

I did find the family you document in census records, and it gave me a start; but I can put this other Freideman with his parents elsewhere in the US while I have mine getting married in Philadelphia.

It's remarkable how many Jahns have the same first names.

Thank you again!
