Bill William Lee Jakeway, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio Perrysburg Inpatient Unit on December 23, 2010, at the age of 72 years.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, to Clare and Hildegarde Jakeway, One of five siblings, he was the second born in a family of strong Irish ancestry.
He attended school in Detroit where he swam competitively, winning the league championship his senior year and placing seventh in the state of Michigan. He then followed his father and sister to study at Michigan State University where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in History.
In keeping with Jakeway family roots going back to Revolutionary times, Bill Jakeway was a veteran and he imparted a deep love of country to his sons, Patrick and Bradley.
After graduating from Michigan State, he served in the Army and taught high school. After his stint, he journeyed to California where he met Susan Wiggins at Disneyland in Anaheim, California in 1960. A spark was lit and they kept in touch between Michigan and Nebraska and he later hitchhiked in his Army uniform to Nebraska for their wedding in Gothenburg, Nebraska.
After living in Colorado and Michigan, Bill and Sue settled in Toledo, Ohio in the early '60s where he worked for as a Sales Representative for Safeco Insurance. Not many years thereafter, he bought an insurance agency.
Bill was very committed to the Jakeway Insurance Agency and his customers. He endured through many hard times and downturns and kept the business going successfully.
The king of the one-liner, "Jake" was the life of the party and invested his spirit for fun into these wonderful, life-long relationships. Bill's favorite hangout was Lenny's and he treasured the friendships he formed there.
His favorite place was the cottage at Lake Seneca in northwest Ohio. Bill drove the one hour trek to the lake every weekend from May to Labor Day for the past forty years. He taught his sons to fish and ski there and the family spent countless days there grilling hamburgers, boating, swimming at the beach and hanging out with their friends from the lake.
Bill and Sue loved to invite their friends for great celebrations at Lake Seneca. His son Patrick married Angela there. Sue and Bradley celebrated their Master's and Bachelor's degree graduations together at the lake. The cottage held the most tender place in Bill's heart.
Truly, the cottage was the most important place of Jakeway family togetherness and good times.
Bill is survived by his sisters, Dorothy and Helen; his two sons, Patrick and Bradley; his two granddaughters, Eileen and Carleigh; and his two grandsons, Tom and Cole. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue; and sisters, Mary Jane and Janet.
