FYI - There is a small town in Norway called Saebo. It is on the west coast near Alesund. I spent the summer working on a farm there in 1979. The whole area was made up of small family farms.

I am a Sabo....my grandfather Joseph Andreas Sabo came over from Norway with his family (His mother was Ella Sabo and his father was Andreas Sabo). It was spelled SÆBO in Norway, they dropped the "AE" to use only english alphabet and now it is SABO. I know that some of the same family took the Lilloeren name. They all came from farms in Sognefjord, near Vik. My grandparents and family came across to the Ballard and Arlington towns in Washington. I visited several years back and found the gravesites behind a small church.

I have more information about my family, but would have to dig it out of a box somewhere. Anyhow...if it helps, and if anyone can add to the lineage I would be interested.

Samson Jakobsson from Iceland

I am hoping someone out there can help me. I am looking for info on my husband's grandfather and his family. Here is what know:

Samson Jakobsson b. 31 Mar 1897 d. 1967

He had the following siblings:
- Halldóra Jakobsdóttir, b. 7 July 1890, d. 1938
- Kristján Jakobsson, b. 18 July 1891, d. 7 Feb 1972
- Anna Jakobsdóttir, b. 4 Jan 1893, d. 1965
- Jóhanna Jakobsdóttir, b. 31 Aug 1899, d. 21 Apr 1980
- Kristján Þorgeir Jakobsson, b. 11 Jan 1900, d. Sep 1942

His parents were:
- Jakob Samsonarson, b. 12 Dec 1864, d. 21 Apr 1900
- Ólafía Kristjánsdóttir, b. 29 Aug 1862, d. 6 Jan 1949

As far as I know Samson is the only one who emigrated to America. The "Americanized" version of his name was Jacobson. He was first in New York and then proceed west to California where he lived most of his adult life until he died. Samson married once and had one child.

According to Ellis Island ship manifests it appears he was a merchant marine from 1919 to 1922 until he "deserted" the vessel Gdansk.

I am interested in finding children or grandchildren of all of Samson's siblings. If you have any info please email me at frye72@yahoo.com

Thank you!!

Hi Betty,

This is my first time on this message board. I was drawn to the names you posted. My information may have nothing to do with yours but I had to share it, just in case. My grandfather, Jakob Jonsson (born abt 1860) emigrated to Winnipeg from Iceland, in 1888. His son, Arni had a daughter, Yakabena Magadelina. The names are similar but the countries are different. There are some members of Jakob' family we don't know about yet. What do you thik?
Lynn

I have traced my grandfathers family to the Sabo farm in Norway through responses to these message boards. It has been very exciting. Do you know what part of Norway your family is from. My Grandfather Jake Sabo is from Hjelmeland, Stavanger (now Rogaland), Norway. His father was Jakob Jakobsen Saebo, and his mother was Malene Olsdtr from the Skiftun farm. Do these names mean anything?

My Dad's side of the family is of Norweigan and Swedish decent. I have been told that my Grandfather's parents came over when he was a young child. They too took the same Sabo from a farm in Norway. It is said that the name was Ellingson before. I have also been told that it used to be that when people emmigrated to America, customs would ask the name of the family. Some families could not speak english and would only state the name of the place they came from, for instance, the Sabo farm.

The 1865 census for Hjelmeland, Rogaland (old name was Stavanger amt), Norway indicates a farm there listed as 'Sæbø'. This location may be the origins of the Sabo/Saby name.
There is a man in Norway currently interested in tracking what happened to the emigrants from the Hjelmeland area. You can find his posting on the Rootsweb boards under the Norway - Rogaland specific board.

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I have realy just started to look for these relatives in the last few months. I do not know where Julianne was born, other than Norway, but will keep looking. I haven't come across any of the names you have there. Will let you know if I come up with anything.
Penny.

I have found out that my grandfather came from Hjemland, Stavanger, Norway. I may not have the spelling exactly right. Do you know where in Norway your family comes from? Magdalina is the name of his mother, we have carried it down for several generations as Madeline (Mal) for short. I don't know much about any siblings he may have had. I do know that he had a brother Ole. One of Ole's sons imigrated to North Dakota. He took the name Saby. My grandfather took the name Sabo. This name has some connection to the family but I don't know what. Another of Ole's children was named Eli Sabo (Friestad), I assume that this was a female and the last name is a married name??? Does the Sabo name show up anywhere in your family. It would be interesting to see if any of this connects.

I have read your message, and some names are familiar. My grandmothers name before marriage was JULIANNA MAGDELINE JACOBSON. She came from Norway, to Alberta,Canada, with her husband (JULIUS HERSTAD). and four children in 1911. As far as I know she had a brother Jake, who came over to the United States, but I understood that he was not married. If this fits with anything you have, please get in touch. Thanks.

My Grandfather was an immigrant from Norway. Maybe Trondheim. My father told me he took the name Sabo from the farm he came from. I have a photo of his father but we don't know his name. His mother was Magdalina. We have a photo of her but no other information. My Grandfather Jakob (Jake) was born about 1875. If you have names like this in your family let me know.

I don't think we have the same people but it is so interesting to hear all the stories. I will never understand why people don't listen and talk more while they are living. So many questions that are so simple. Like what was your fathers name? Golly! Thanks so much for answering it gives me hope. Happy hunting.

Sabo Farm in Norway occupied by Jakobsons

My Grandfather was born Jakob Jakobson. He changed his name to Sabo when in immigrated in approx 1884. It is said the farm he lived on was called Sabo, and that he felt there were too many Jakobsons. I am wondering if anyone has heard of the name Sabo in Norway? most Sabo's I have met have a Hungarian heritage. Any help would be great.

That is interesting. I have found out that my Grandfather was from Stavenger (not sure of spelling). He had a nephew who also came and settled in North Dakota. He took the name Saby. I don't quite get it. I am hoping to travel to Norway one day, perhaps I can uncover some information then. At any rate we are Sabo now and very pround of it.
