Sorry for the very late reply.

I have the exact location of Anton's birth, etc. (Svinov being in the Silesia region, now absorbed into Ostrava), but any records I have on Mikel or Barbora do not list their city of birth. (Ellis Island records are no good, as they came here before Ellis Island opened; they went through Castle Clinton in NYC before going on to Baltimore). Currently my research is looking into whether or not Barbora's line of Janaceks could be any relation to the composer Leos Janacek, as Leos' home town of Hukvaldy is also in the Moravia-Silesia region. A long shot, but a starting point.

As far as my husband knows, the relatives in PA are the only other Yaneshak relatives that he is aware of in the U.S. His grandfather was of Ukrainian descent and came here in the early 1910s.

Cynthia Shenette

I don't have much information for you, but maybe this will help us both.

My 3x great-grandmother is Barbra/Barbora Janacek Cabak. She was born in 1839, but I dont' have much more information on her early life other than that she married Mikel Cabak in 1865.

She and Mikel had 2 children, Mikel (b. 1866) and Celestyna (b. 1868) before immigrating to the United States in the 1880s.

Some records say they came from Moravia and others say Austria. Based on the fact that Celestyna's husband, Anton Tomanek, came from Svinov in what is now the Czech Republic, and that my great-grandpa said that Czech was spoken when he was growing up, I assume that Celestyna's parents were from the same general region.

My great grandmother Magdalena Janecek was born in “Prague” in either 1856 or 1865. According to her death record, her father was Joseph. I am trying to find village in which she lived, hoping that she and my great grandfather married there and possibly filed their request to emigrate to America from there (Joseph in 1881, Magdalena in 1883). I don’t know if they were married and emigrated together or married here in America. I have no luck finding her in my great grandfather Joseph Kantorik’s village of Osek, District Rokycany. I would like to correspond with any Janecek/Janacek families to see what village their ancestors came from, just to give me a place to start looking! Thank you!

Lydia and James Janacek had children: Linus and Donald; Leonard and Cecilia Humpal had children: Ermin, Melvin, and Virgil, and Adah and Valentine Frana had children: Virginia (married to Mr. Sobr) and Dorris Ann. John (Jan) Humpal had two sisters: Mary Humpal (1861-Aug 14, 1931), and Veruna (married to John Lundak) Humpal. John, Mary, and Veruna's parents were John and Mary Humpal. They came over as a family from Bohemia in 1867. Most of them resided in the areas of Calmar and Spillville. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Heidi Christensen
Janacek, Doherty from Chicago, Cook, IL

I am looking for any information anyone might have regarding Janacek's from Chicago, Illinois.

Vivian Elsie Janacek was born in Chicago in 1924 and died in Wyoming in 1958. She had a brother named Ralph who may still be alive. From what I've heard, her family disowned her after she got married.

Her mother's name was Julia. I don't know her maiden name. Either her husband (Mr. Janacek) died or they were divorced, and she then married a Mr. William Doherty. I believe the children (Vivian and Ralph) took his last name, and went by Doherty.

Please contact me if you have any information regarding this family. Thanks.

chloesmom@cayuse.net

Janisek possibly Janacek?

The 1910 census of Joliet, Illinois has a John Janisek residing with Frank Rozga. John is listed as a nephew, aged 22. Is it possible that Jasinek is a variation of Janacek? I have also seen the name Jasinski in Joliet. I'm trying to find out if John Jasinek was the son of my great-great Aunt Rose. I have NO information on Rose. Any information would be appreciated.

Many Janacek's came to America in the 1880's to the 1890's. Many have Americanized their names and makes the search more difficult. If you could find the families that came abroad, your search may be easier. Many Czechs came to America through New York, Texas, and Louisian. Try looking for information in that area.

Franz Janaczek had sons named Josef, Johan, and Adolph. Adolph came to America with his brothers in the late 1800's. They, too came through Galveston up the Indianola Trail and settled in Dayton near Houston, TX. From what I have gathered so far, this family comes from Male (Klein) Hrabowa, Moravia. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Adolph married Anna Fiser. Adolph died in 1913 in Ammansville, TX.

Thank you for your response.

John M.

My family originated in Male Hrbova, Moravia. It is my understanding there were many Janacek's from Moravia who migrated to the U.S. in the late 1800's. My Grandfather, fluent in Czech, says Janacek means "little giants" because our ancestors were short stocky people. I can't say this is true today, I'm 6'3". My Great-Great-Great Grandfather migrated from Male Hrbova in 1880 and landing in Eastgate, TX near Houston. I hope this may help.
