"EP" Elisha Paul JANES b.26Jul1877 NY d.30Aug1940 CA - Home builder in Altadena, CA
Looking for ANY info regarding Elisha Paul JANES. EP Janes built several homes (1924 - 1926) in Altadena, CA. This website will provide some additional info: http://www.janesvillage.org/History.html
EP was born in NY on July 26, 1877 and moved to Altadena in 1924. He died Aug 30, 1940 in San Diego, CA.
He appears to have possibly been married twice:
1) Lou or Leore b. Nov. 1877 VT
2) Edith P. Lloyd b. Oct 1, 1882 TX (her mother's maiden name was LAKE, died a few days after her husband on Sept 3, 1940 San Diego, CA - I have no cause of death for either.
Someone has posted quite a bit of information that shows EP as the son of Capt. LL Janes and Harriet W. Scudder. No additional info is noted for his father, but his mother, Harriet came from a line Ministers who appear to have been missionaries in India: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&...
Harriet's parent's and some siblings are shown on the 1870 census in San Francisco Ward 10, CA
I was unable to locate a Capt. LL JANES in the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, although a Capt LL JONES is listed. http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/
It should be noted that I have found limited comments in online discussion boards where the topic concerns the movie "The Last Samurai". Comments were made that the movie was based on the book "American Samurai: Captain LL Janes and Japan", by Fred G. Notehelfer .
Apparently, the book credits a Capt LL Janes with going to Japan after the civil war to teach military tactics with regard to firearms - also that he brought his wife with him and she opened up a school of Western literature and culture. There is at least one strong statement posted that claims that the information is fictional.
I am not related to this family, but am doing research on EP JANES. Any help that you could provide would be great, thank you!
