MANSFIELD: John "J.J." Janes, age 88, passed away Monday evening, December 10, 2012 at Hospice of North Central Ohio in Ashland, Ohio.
Born December 25, 1923 in Grafton, West Virginia, he was the last surviving child of the late John and Audrey (McDaniel) Janes.
He was a member of the U.S. Marines serving during WWII with the 1st Marine Division stationed in Guadalcanal, China and Iwo Jima.
J.J. retired from Westinghouse Corp. where he worked as an electrician.
He lived in Mansfield for over 50 years and also resided in Florida. He was currently living at Primrose where he received excellent care from his caregivers.
J.J. was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mansfield Masonic Lodge #35, F & AM, and was a 32nd Degree Mason. J.J. had a wonderful sense of humor, was a free spirit who could be a "little bit contrary" and was kind and generous to all he met.
J.J. is survived by two sons, Thomas (Pat) Janes and Donald (Charlotte) Janes, both of Mansfield; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Gary of Hospice of North Central Ohio called on J.J. for two years and became a good friend.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, June White Janes; a grandson; two brothers; and two sisters.
Friends and family may visit from 6-8 p.m. Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield, OH.
Private family services will be observed. Military honors will be presented by the U.S. Marine Corps at Mansfield Memorial Park.
