Re: Janofsky - Relatives of Lena, Jacob, Irving, Charlie, Betty, Sam, Dora and Eva

Hi,
I think this is a long shot, but I am wondering if there might be a connection between your Janofskys and the Dworkins who are family members of mine. Samuel and Celia Dworkin, both born in Russia, had a son Louis, and daughters Sophie, Eva, Fannie, and Sadie. Louis was married to Sarah (maiden name unknown to me).

My family always said that Murray Janofsky (parents Herman and Celia) was a cousin. [Murray Janofsky was the well-known comedian, Jan Murray.] I know there was a connection between Louis Dworkin and Murray Janofsky, but am not clear as to what that connection was.

As you mentioned the name Dworin (which might be Dworkin) in your Janofsky post, I wondered if there might be some relationship here.

My grandmother's maiden name was Blumenthal and the Janofskys and Dworkins were somehow related to the Blumenthals. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Faye Gibson, Denver, Colorado

My name is Damon Janis (b1966 CA), my father is Joel Janis (b1934 CA), who is the son of Sam Janofsky (also called Sidney Janofsky b1908 IL), who is the son of Jacob Janofsky (b1889 Grodna Poland), who is the son of Eli Janofsky (don't have birth date). My records show that Sam was born in 1908 in IL. My grandmother Ada Kallin (b1910 London) was married to Sam Janofsky and changed her last name to Janis after their divorce in the 1940's. Jacob Janofsky was married to Eva Gensburg (b1886). I think this is the same line you are inquiring about but not totally sure since the birth dates don't exactly match but the names seem to be correct, including the last name change to Janis.

Looking for any information regarding the Janofsky family line - starting with Max and Celia (Monash) Janofsky (both born in Russia) and their children - Lena (1889 NY), Jacob "Jack" (1890 NY), Ida (1891 NY), (Israel) Irving (1893 NY) - [changed last name to Janis], Betty (abt 1895), Charlie (1898 IL), Sam (1899 IL), Dora (1903 IL) and Eva (1905 MI).

Lena's husband's name was Dave Kahn, Irving's wife's name was Ethel, Charlie's wife's name was Dorothy Gordon, Dora's husband's name was Isadore Pilip, Eva's husband was Samuel Dworin, Jacob's wife was Sadie Felsenfeld, and I think Bettey was married to a John Collins and then to a man with the last name of Zinc - she lived in Arizona, USA.

Obit in LA Times April 26th 2008
Nancy a proud california native and member of the Greatest Generation died April 15th at St.John's Hospital in Santa MOnica in the company of loving family.Though in frail health at the age of 94 her strong spirit never faltered. She was a challenge to caregivers, doctors and her family to the end.
Born and raised in Santa Barbara where her father was mayor she referred often to happy youthful years and closeness to her younger sister, Marjorie. She attended Occidental College and USC before marrying Calude Yeoman. A daughter Claudette was born but the marriage ended in divorce. She moved with her daughter parents and sister to West LA in 1939.
Nancy spent the hardships of the depression years and WW2 in a 3 generation household, working as a secretary in an aircraft plant and volunteering at the Hollywood USO.
She remainded a single mother until 1948 when she married her great love, Leonard Janofsky, then a yong promising attorney. Happy family years followed. Their son, John, who later became an attoreny was born in 1951. The Westwood home they purchased in 1953 is still the family home. Both children married and started their own families in the area.
Nancy's huband Leonard a founding partner of the firm Paul, Hasting,Janofsky and Walker was elected President to the American Bar Association. As world travelers they gathered friends everywhere. Nancy remained true to her modest unpretentious style, but her sharp mind and strength of character were undeniable. Her hsuband told may colleagues that she was this greatest assest. Their romance was legend, but Nancy a passionate Democrat delighted in cancelling her husbands Republican vote.
When Leonard passed away in 2000 Nancy assumed the matriarchal leadership of a large loving family which included in addition to Claudette and John a daughter in law Jackie, stepdaughter Irene Hartzell, 4 granchildren Eric,Carla, Tom and Alex, stepgrandson, Mark and 6 greatgrandhcildren and 2 deat caregivers, Dorothy and Tami.
Nancy coveted birthdays at her Santa Barbara beach house, ate at La Dolce Vita whenever possible, loved games and dogs, and cherished her bridge freinds. A special bond with her granchildren, her open heart and strong will are enduring legacies. Now her family expects that she is reunited with her sister and parents, dancing with Leonard and probably looking for Roy Orbison. Family memorial is pending .
