Our family history tells that Jannetje's second marriage (she was a widow) was to Laurens. She brought with her into that marriage the land that Trinity Church in lower Manhattan sits on. The records of their marriage are in The Old Dutch Church, NYC. The addition of VanBuskirk by Laurens may have occurred as they moved further north in what is now Manhattan but was then "the woods". The other story is that when he first came to America, Laurens was a turner (lathe worker) by trade and may have added Van Buskirk which means "turner" to become more "Dutch". This may have occurred as the English took over New York. The VanBuskirks were instrumental in laying out the platte's of land which is now Hackensack, NJ. There is a Van Buskirk Point and Cemetary in that area, I've been told. My line of the family comes directly from Laurens and Jannetje through at least 10 generations. We came to Oregon in 1848 via The Oregon Trail. (Hendersons, VanBuskirks, Whistlers) and originally settled the area near Amity, Oregon. My great-grandmother was Barbry Whistler (her mother was Sarah VanBuskirk . I do have a very good geneology of the direct lineage up to my grandfather. I have a copy of a letter written by a cousin, Oriann VanBuskirk, 1853 Knox County Ohio to her cousin who had just arrived in Oregon Country.
