Hi there,
My name is Michele Coe my father's mother was Freda Jans. We're having a reunion of the Jans family here in Taranaki on the 28th of November 2009 with the hope of tracing our ancestors back to your town in Switzerland. I look forward to hearing from you and can offer more information if you think it's possible we may have some connection.

Michele

I have an almost 100 year old documented family history that indicates Anneka as the family's starting point (my grandmother's family history). It has dates for my ancestors populating Manhatten and goes back to early 1500s through to early 1900's. It was kept in a very old huge bible by my great grandmother who passed it onto my grandmother.
It's too bad you didn't know there were VanBuskirk relations in the Roseburg, Riddle area when you were there.
My father, Wallace (Mike) William Matthews was born west of Lookingglass on Reston Mountain in 1906. He was next to youngest of 10 children. (Sarah VanBuskirk and Elijah Whistler were his Great-Grandparents) Sarah's daughter, Barbara VanBuskirk Whistler was his grandmother. She lived with them in her last years. He loved to talk about her. She was pretty opinionated and feisty.
When you worked for Roseburg Lumber did you know any Matthews? or a Mike Simmons, Bob Tjomsland, or Bob Manning?
I'm having trouble getting my computer to attach this the files to this. It wants to attach all of the documents in the documents file. I'll send you a regular e-mail via pthorn6780@comcast.net

Thanks for the prompt reply Berniece. My line comes from George Joris through to John Strauns VB who was the son of Joseph C (or George???). I grew up in the Portland area (Gresham) and migrated to Oz in 1980 after a 7 year stint at Riddle working for Roseburg Forest Products plant #4. I know Whistlers Bend but never knew the story or that we are closely related to it. Who was Sarah's Dad? Dates (B/M/D)? I will peice it togather from there if you like.
Great grand was George Westly. My Grandfather is George John (1914-)brother of Westly j. ,Carl A. , and Ellen M. The Diary and Bible you mention is new to me and I would love to hear more about it. Lets stay in touch to share our research and perhaps a cuppa on my trip around.
I have just checked and have received the E-mail re: letter but the attachment didn't stick so I may need you to send again, sorry. PDF or JPEG is good but I have trouble with TIF, don't know why. Baker city is on my list for sure, thanks.
I will scan the letter and e-mail it to you tomorrow as an attachment.
I'm looking at my Van Buskirk history and trying to find your Joseph. Were Joseph's (George's) parents William Van Buskirk and Margaret Evans? or Were they George (Joris) Van Buskirk and Sarah?
Your trip sounds wonderful. My husband and I have taken 2 trips to Iowa to research my mother's family. The trips were fun and we have been able to collect so much more information and insight into those ancestors.
My son who is back in NYC promises he will go with me to NJ in the next few years to visit Van Buskirk sites. I am really looking forward to any information you find.
When you do get to Oregon, or prior, we would love to meet you. I live in Salem. It is just 15 miles to Amity where the Van Buskirks settles. Sadly, I have never been there to spend time. Just last week we were on our way thru there and I again mentioned I needed to make time to get over there and look up the graves etc. Several years ago, I learned that the Van Buskirk Bible was probably not in the hands of a descendant. If you have contacted any other "relatives" in Oregon I would appreciate it if you could share who and where. I definitely can send you to Roseburg, OR and my Barbary Van Buskirk Whistler sites and family. I can, also, give you some information on an Oregon Trail Site or several where you can see the tracks etc. I was born and raised in Eastern Oregon near the tiny town of Ione. Just a few miles north of there is Wells Springs, mentioned in the Van Buskirk diary. The Oregon Trail Center in Baker City, Oregon is the best in Oregon, I think. I've not been as impressed with the one in Oregon City, OR. There is an Interpretive Center in The Dalles, Oregon on the Columbia River. It and the Native American museum at the Wild Horse Casino near Pendleton, OR are both worth your time in terms of history of the area.
My name is Berniece Matthews Thornton and my e-mail is pthorn6780@comcast.net I was so pleased to hear from you.

Hi Jans, Cousin Bob here, the ozzy one. I would love a copy of that letter if you can scan it for me. I have not made myself annonamous, (should I?) so you can e-mail me if you like(bobvanb@tpg.com.au). I have continued to do some research on our family and will travel to NJ in July as part of my world trip this year. I plan to visit the site of the old homestead although it is an oil refinery now, I think. I will also make some photo documentation of Birds Point and what's left of the cemetery (if anything) for our posterity. I will then continue on through NJ, PA and other states including OH across to OR. I believe my family meets yours with Joseph C. (George) van Buskirk who would have been the 49er. My Grandfather George J. still worked the Little Humbug mine until the late 30's sometime. His brother, Westly was the poet and historian of the family and I am attempting to follow his footsteps. Any help is much loved. All others welcome to join my pilgrimage starting in Manchester NH on 22 july 2007 returning there 16 August 2007 (around the continent in 25 days). HD (hog)or equivelent required but not supplied.

Rumor has it (at least what I've been told since I was younger) is that Laurens A. Van Buskirk, born Laurens Andriessen, son of Andres & Margaret Andriessen, got into some sort of trouble in Europe, came to the states and adopted (stole?) the name "Van Buskirk." Any truth to this story or is it a fable??

E. conference, appointments took them to many parts of Oregon and Washington including Harrington, Rosalia, Walla Walla, Ritzville, Portland, Salem and Tacoma, as well as others.

They later moved to a farm north of Sprague and in 1920 retired to their present home in Edwall.

Rev. Jans was born in March 15, 1861 in Hamburg, Germany. He is survived by his wife Anna; two daughters, Mrs. W. R. Miller and Mrs. G. W. Olson, both of Spokane; four sons, Dr. Detlaff of Forest Grove, Oregon, Henry, Fred and Charles all of Edwall, and five grandchildren.

I'm not related to this family.

Ours definitely were from Germany.

If you're having trouble finding your family and are sure they were from Denmark, try looking for JENS(en) maybe the name changed?

Good Luck in your search!

As a decendent of Anneka myself I would also be interested in any information. However, I have yet to find connections between Wolfred Webber Anneka's father and William of Orange. I think Wolfred was the son of Williams third marriage. And that Anneka was the Illigitamate child between Wolfred and a Norweigan woman. However, only DNA testing between us and the Dutch royal family would tell.

I'm looking for any information on Aeltje Jans and her ancestry/family. She was born 1617, died 1645. She married Jan Cornelissen Joncker (Jonkers/Jonker) (born 1613, died after March 8, 1643) in 1638. Their children include Jan Jonsen (Janszen) Jonckers (born Sept. 3, 1640), who married Tryntje Claas (born 1644). Jan and Tryntje's children include Rachel Jane Jonckers (christened Jan. 20, 1686). She married William Bowen Sr. (I) (born about 1680) on Sept. 13 or 17, 1702 in Schenectady, New York.
I know the line extends into the Netherlands, and I'm looking for whatever information that I can get. I'm willing to exchange information regarding Rachel's descendants (I'm one).

Re: Grietje JANS and some general Dutch Info

What information do you have??

I suspect we are most distantly related. My ancester Tryntie Jans married Frans Wessels in most likely upstate NY in the 1600s. Their daughter Dievertje married Isaac Bradt. I know the Bradts were traders with land in several Hudson River based towns.

The tie or tje, ect denotes a child as Ronnie means Ronald today in our culture. These colonials kept the nick name through life instead of getting an adult name when they became a women. Grietje was a popular name in the 1600s.

I am warning for you that these Dutch were usually wheeler-dealers. They were in the trade and mostly fur trade. Why a warning? They had more reasorces than you will expect. Most either owned or had ready access to small fast sailboats that could travel the Hudson River much faster than we would expect. A good deal of them had land holdings in several places. These would most likely be warfs on the Hudson. However, you will not be able to tell this. Therefore, you will not know where they really lived so you will not find church records.

Also look for name switches.
Happy hunting!

I have traced my ancestry back to Anneke (or Annetje) Jans. She is the daughter of Wolfert Webber, granddaughter of Prince William the Silent of Orange-Nassau, and wife of Roeloff Jans and Everardus Bogardus. Her daughter that is in my ancestral line was listed on One World Tree as Jaepe Jans, but looking at websites about Anneke, Jaepe Jans has not been listed as one of her and Roeloff's children. Does anyone have any information?

Adam died either aboard ship or right after they landed in America. Jannetje remarried "5 Apr 1659 Isaac Abrahamszen, Van N.

Brenda: I think that that name was fairly common in Holland. The surname Jans is seen often in the records and, of course, Jannetje is common also. Mine was born in Gilderland, Netherlands, probably around 1632 as she married Adam Wensel Van Santen @ 1652. Their two children, Catharine, born 9 Sept 1653 and Johannes, born 22 Apr 1657, were born in Arnheim, Netherlands. Each of the family died in NY. Jannetje remarried after her first husband died and bore about four more children with him.
Thank you for writing. Wish we could claim each other.
Julia

Jannetje Jans

Our family history tells that Jannetje's second marriage (she was a widow) was to Laurens. She brought with her into that marriage the land that Trinity Church in lower Manhattan sits on. The records of their marriage are in The Old Dutch Church, NYC. The addition of VanBuskirk by Laurens may have occurred as they moved further north in what is now Manhattan but was then "the woods". The other story is that when he first came to America, Laurens was a turner (lathe worker) by trade and may have added Van Buskirk which means "turner" to become more "Dutch". This may have occurred as the English took over New York. The VanBuskirks were instrumental in laying out the platte's of land which is now Hackensack, NJ. There is a Van Buskirk Point and Cemetary in that area, I've been told. My line of the family comes directly from Laurens and Jannetje through at least 10 generations. We came to Oregon in 1848 via The Oregon Trail. (Hendersons, VanBuskirks, Whistlers) and originally settled the area near Amity, Oregon. My great-grandmother was Barbry Whistler (her mother was Sarah VanBuskirk . I do have a very good geneology of the direct lineage up to my grandfather. I have a copy of a letter written by a cousin, Oriann VanBuskirk, 1853 Knox County Ohio to her cousin who had just arrived in Oregon Country.
