Dear Robin thank you so very much for this information. i will include it in my records.
The Chester Jarnagin my cousin Virginia Furgerson and I are trying to connect to Noah/Mary Russell Jarnagin was married to Margaret Grove in 1823 Jefferson Co Tn. Chester is on the 1830 and 1840 Census but Margaret is alone on the 1850 census. Her name is misspelled Jarngio. We know it is Chester's Margaret by the children. There is a Grove diary that confirms the marriage also.
Do you have information on this family. The Thomas Jarnagin book by Leeper mentions our Chester as a possible son but we are looking for positive confirmation.
Again THANK YOU SO MUCH for your response. If you find any information about our Chester's father we will be very grateful. Sincerely, Gertie Jarnagin Day

Jarnagins/Johnakin from Marlboro County SC or North Carolina
I am a great great grandchild of Tommie Jane Johnakin McCrae of Bennettsville, SC which is in Marlboro County. I have been trying to find out specifics of her ancestry. It was rumored that there was Native American ancestry. I have since found out that Johankin is a corruption of Jarnagin or Jernigan. We are African American, but clearly there is some Native or Caucasian ancestry in the family and I am just trying to determine which is present, or perhaps both. Any information would be greatly appreciated. forneen@verizon.net

-Her parents were Ancil and Ellen Johnakin. There were siblings named Hagood, Evander, Amanda and Anson.

Hi,

My great-grandparents were Jarnagins and I have always heard that we have Cherokee blood. From what I know it would have been from my great, great, great, great grandma or grandpa. Our family has kept pretty good records. I will dig around and see what I can find. Gayla who posted earlier could be my great aunt.... not sure. :)

Rachel Forrest

Hi Robin
This is about your connection to Noah.....Do you have any information on Chester Jarnagin who married Margaret Grove in1823?
There are indications, references and "maybe" to the strong probability that Chester was Noah's son. I have yet to find any absolute written confirmation of this. Do you have any information on Chester as the son of Noah?
I gratefully appreciate any help.
Gertie Jarnagin Day Daydoodaday@aol.com

I am really looking forward to seeing the pics and any other information you have. I have researching this side of my family for over 5 years and it really hard to come across pics, portraits. I feel really lucky that you found me! Hope to hear from you soon.

Best Regards,
Robin

Robin,

I just returned home from a research trip in East and Middle Tennessee. I was researching my own family (Dale, Shipley, etc.) but I surprised at how prominent the name Jarnagin was in that region! While I was staying in Jonesborough, TN, I happened to hear a political ad (if I recall correctly) for a Jarnagin who was running for local office there, and then I stumbled upon this reference in the public library there:

Clark, Glenn Susong. 1977. Jarnagin Collections, and allied families. Clark Publications, Indianapolis. 493 p.

I also saw a copy of the same work in the library in Livingston, Overton Co., TN. There were no "Gus's" listed in the index but I only glanced at the volume briefly. It's a massive compilation. You may be aware of it already.

Later in the holiday season, after I get all my research materials from this trip organized and entered, I'll get back to "the band" and I'll be in touch regarding pics, etc.

Chuck

Re: Chester Jarnagin

Judy,
My cousin who is helping me research the Jarnagin line found some information on the Vittetoes that you may or may not have. She found a book by mary Reeves "Inventories of Estates&Wills Grainger County 1833-1852" The estate of Rufus Scruggs mentions a James Vittetoe and and Isaac Vittetoe. She looked at the 1850 census for Grainger County and found a James Vitito with what we think is a Minney age 14 which would be about the age Malinda would have been in 1850. The household though has to contain two families for James since his wife is on 23 and her name is Elizabeth and they have children listed ranging from 16 to 5/12. In 1860 I found the family again and the name is spelled Vittitoe and James is 48 born in KY and Elizabeth is 29? probably 39 with children ranging in age from 20 to 1. In the 1840 census for Grainger county I found Isaac Vitito, Hiran Vitito and James Vitito. Now I think this James is probably the father of Malinda I just need to find a wife and since he was born in KY I don't know if he was married to his first wife in KY or in TN I have to go back and look at the other census records. I didn't know if any of this connected to your Vittetoes or not. Hope all is going well for you and sorry I have not been in touch sooner.
Virginia Yeary-Ferguson

There was a Gus Lee Jarnagin Sr. (b. 1883, TN; d. 1968, CA) and Gus Lee Jarnagin Jr. (b. Nov. 1909, MS; d. 1953, Los Angeles, CA).

Gus Sr. married Malinda Cox (according to IGI). They had at least four children:

Lee? A. (b. about 1905),
Walter H. (abt 1907),
Gus Lee Jr. (3 Nov 1909 - 8 Mar 1953),
Robert W. (20 Nov 1911 - May 1987).

Gus Lee Jarnagan Jr. was a musician who traveled to the Orient with the Terry Dantzler Orchestra in 1933-34.

I am not related, but my father traveled with the same orchestra and I have many photos from his trip, including many of GLJ. I'd like to get in touch with members/descendants of this family to share the photos.

Does anyone know what line these Gus Jarnagins came from?

Chuck

POW/MIA JARNAGIN

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Polk County, Iowa as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: J D Jarnagin
Born: 1927 Caucasian
Date of loss: April 22, 1951

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The JARNAGIN family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I am sorry, I worded my post incorrectly - Lea is definitely a child of C. T. P. Jarnagin - however Lea is not a child of Amanda and C. T. P. Jarnagin - many times you find Lea listed as being a child of Julia P. and C. T. P. Jarnagin and she was not a child of theirs, they completely omit the actual daughter of Amanda and C. T. P. who is Julia P. C. T. P. and Amanda had three children: H. E. (probably Henry Edward), Lucy P. and Julia P. I have just been frustrated with the data I find that completely omits Julia as their child and many times lists Lea as one of their children. Lea is definately a child of C. T. P Jarnagin, but with a different wife than Amanda.
Sorry for the mixup
Darlene

Julia P. Jarnagin was born September 12, 1862in Georgia - daughter of C. T. P. Jarnagin (Doctor) and Amanda Albright. Julia's sister and brother are Henry E., born Dec. 24, 1858 in Georgia and Lucy P., born August 30, 1860. Julia married James W. Walker on January 20, 1880 in Yell, Arkansas. Julia died Feb. 20, 1939 in Yell, Arkansas (Gravelly). It is not that I have no information on Julia, but what I have has taken years to find because Julia is not mentioned in any Jarnagin data, so she might as well not exist as a Jarnagin as far as info on the Jarnagin line is concerned. Thanks you for offering to check, I really appreciate it. Another thing I have not been able to find is marriage data for Amanda and C. T. P., I they lived in Georgia while married and had their children there, then when they separated she went on to Arkansas and C. T. P. went back to Tennessee.
Darlene

This is the problem I have with the Jarnagin info, they have a George listed as Amanda and C. T. P. child, but they never had a son called George, instead they had another daughter named Julia Jarnagin who married my greatgrandfather, and since she is never mentioned anywhere I cannot find any data on her. You are correct that George is not a child of Amanda and C. T. P. Jarnagin. Also C. T. P. and Amanda only had 3 children, Henry E., Lucy and Julia Jarnagin. If you ever find data on Julia please let me know.
Darlene

Hello,

I read your post. Umm, I don't recognize the names that you listed. This is my lineage as goes:

Samuel and Sarah Mae Borah James >> William Lloyd and Magdalene James Rogers >> John Porter and Sarah Elizabeth Rogers Jarnagin >> James Henry and Sarah Alverda Jarnagin Jackson Collins (My Great Grandparents)

Many folks who are in my family line have speculated about there being Cherokee blood in the Jarnagin line, but my thinking has been and I could be wrong, that perhaps the Cherokee connection is not through the Jarnagin line, but the James line.

The people that I have seen in family pictures of the Rogers and Jarnagin lines are not dark, but many people in the James line are, in fact Jesse James who is a distant cousin, looks very much like my direct line of the James family. You might be interested in discovering more info on the James family at http://www.ericjames.org

the Jarnagin book that I have does mention that he was married to Amanda Caroline Albright on10 dec 1857, she was born 30 mar1838. and is says no record of issue. but then it says on page 311 of this book that there were 4 children born to Amanda Albright. 1) Henry Edward Jarnagin b 24dec 1858, 2) lucy Jarnagin b. 30aug1860, 3)George Jarnagin no birth date ( my records show George being born to Julia Reese,my greatgrandmother, in 1871. what is really confusing is my greatgrandparents C.T.P. Jarnagin and Julia Jarnagin were married 16 apr 1865. they had 5 children Reese born 1868,Emerson born 1869,who married my Grandmothers sister Mary, George born 1871,Rachael, who married a william cate born 1872, and my grandfather,Lea, born 1874. I found some of this information on ancestry in the 1880 census.
