& Allied Families 1990

-------------pg-376 & 377---------

JANE (JOHANNA) JARRETT, a daughter of JOHN JARRETT and ANNA MARIA, was born circa 1736. If the family settled in the Macungie area around the time of the initial land grant in 1735, then she was born in Pennsylvania. No baptism records for the Macungie area are available for that period. According to her father's will, this daughter was named “JANE” • The German version would have been JOHANNA, and since most of the baptism records on which her name appeared were written in German, one might say she was also known as “JOHANNA”. She was unmarried when her father's will was written in 1752, and would have been about sixteen years old at that time. It is believed she married about 1755.

JANE (JOHANNA) JARRETT married JOHN WETZEL, a son of Conrad and Catharine (Bayer) Wetzel. He was born 12 December 1730 in the Macungie, Pa. area. The WETZELS were charter members of the early Moravian Community in Emmaus, Pa. Both of JOHN'S parents are buried on the old Moravian Cemetery in Emmaus - the stones are still legible. His younger sister, CATHARINE, was married to JOHANNA'S brother ISAAC JAPRETT about the same time (circa 1755).

Much has been written on the activities of JOHN WETZEL during the Revolutionary War years by Moravian and other Revolutionary period historians. See also THEY CAME TO EMMAUS by Preston Barba (1959). His career will be dealt with briefly in a separate section of this history titled WETZEL FAMILY. In the year 1790 JOHN & JANE WETZEL were credited with the founding of the East Macungie Union School in Lower Macungie Township.

Date of death of JOHANNA JARRETT WETZEL is presently not known. She was still living in 1800 when her daughter ELISABETH'S son was baptized. However, when her husband JOHN died in 1809 she was not named. A housekeeper, Elisabeth Farna, was named instead and was to receive 32 acres of land. JOHN WETZEL died 7 December 1809 and was said to be 79 years less five days of age. According to his will he was survived by five (six?) sons and one daughter. In addition, he named three deceased daughters whose children were to receive their shares of the estate.

As with the DORNEY family, it was almost impossible - in existing records - to distinguish which were the children of .JOHN and JOHANNA, and which were the children of JOHN'S brothers and other relatives. In some cases determinations were made on basis of baptism sponsoring. Circa birth dates were decided on for ten children, and were sometimes based on when the first child was born - in the case of daughters, when the last child was born. The following are believed to be sons and daughters of this couple:

(1) CATHARINE WETZEL - born circa 1755. She married PHILIP MECHLING, a son of Theobald & Anna Elisabeth Mechling. Baptism records of four children born to the couple were found. The first three were baptized at Upper Milford Lutheran Church and the fourth at Lehigh Church. CATHARINE'S share of her father's estate (1809) was left to her children, so she died before that date:

(a) PHILIP MECHLING JR. - born 5 November 1774 - sponsors: Jacob & Charlotta Miller

(b) SOLOMON MECHLING - born 22 August 1776 - sponsors: Joseph & Eva Kopin

(c) FREDERICK MECHLING - born 17 March 1778 - sponsors: Frederick & Maria Reiss

------pg-377----

(d) DANIEL MECHLING - born 1 November 1779 - sponsors: Christian Fisher and Magdalena Wetzel. (Female sponsors of (c) and (d) were sisters of the mother)

(2) CONRAD WETZEL - born circa 1757 - married ELISABETH (she may have been a KERN) Baptism records of five children were located at Upper Milford Reformed Church:

(a) ELISABETH WETZEL - born 5 July 1778 - sponsors: Lawrence & Elisabeth Kern

(b) JOHN WETZEL - born 26 July 1779 - sponsors: John Jarrett & Magdalena Wetzel

(3) RACHEL WETZEL - born,l3 March 1781 - sponsors: Philip & Catharine Mechling

(d) CONRAD WETZEL - born 23 August 1785 - sponsors: G. Adam & Barbara Blanck

(e) JONATHAN WETZEL - born 17 June 1795 - sponsors: Jacob & Susanna Wetzel

(3) ANNA MARIA WETZEL - born circa 1759. She married FREDERICK REISS circa 1778 (they were sponsors at baptism of her sister CATHARINE'S child in 1778). ANNA MARIA'S share of her father's (1809) went to her children, indicating she was deceased before that date. Baptism records of five children were located - first four at Upper Milford Reformed Church and the fifth at Lehigh Church:

(a) BENIGNA REISS - born 1 April 1781 - sponsors: John & Johanna Wetzel

(b) ANNA MARIA REISS - born 29 June 1784 - sponsors: Philip & Catharine Mechling (?)

(c) MAGDALENA REISS - born 28 June 1786 - sponsors: George & Margaret Reiss

(d) JOHN REISS - born 24 May 1788 - sponsors: John & Johanna Wetzel

(e) LOUISA REISS - born 20 May 1795 - sponsors: Leonard & Magdalena Schlauch

(4) DANIEL WETZEL - born circa 1762. It is possible that additional information on DANIEL may be found in JOHN ETZEL'S will probated at Northampton County Court- house, Easton, Pa. Abstract seen has a note to this effect.

(5) MAGDALENA WETZEL - born circa 1764 - she was a sponsor at the baptism of her sister CATHMUNE'S child in 1779, and also at the baptism of her Brother CONRAD'S child that same year. She was the second wife of LEONARD SCIU His first wife was ELISABETH HABERLE, who died January 1783 at the age of 26. MAGDALENA and ELISABETH HABERLE were cousins (see HABERLE). MAGDALENA'S share of her father's estate (1809) was designated to go to her children, indicating she was already deceased. Baptism records of three children found at Lehigh Church:

(a) ADAM SCHLAUCH - born 17 April 1789 - sponsor: Justina Schlauch

(b) GEORGE SCHLAUCH - born 28 January 1792 - sponsors: George & Elisabeth Steininger

(c) MAGDALENA SCHLAUCH - born 18 May 1795 - sponsors: Michael & Catharine

Steiner

(d) See note next page*

(6) HENRY WETZEL - born circa 1766 - confirmed Western Salisbury 8 March 1784 - age 18 and recorded as son of JOHN. He is believed to have married MARGARET DUTT. (see DUTT family in this genealogy) - HENRY died 1814 in South Whitehall. There are baptism records of four children - it is believed there were others.

(7) JOHN WETZEL - born circa 1768 - confirmed Western Salisbury 8 March 1784 - age 16 and recorded as son of JOHN.

(8) JACOB WETZEL - born 3 October 1770 and baptized at Upper Milford Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Jacob & Anna Maria Haan. He married SUSANNA*circa 1793. Baptism records of three Sons were located at Upper Milford Reformed Church:

(a) JACOB WETZEL - born 10 August 1794 - sponsors: John & Johanna Wetzel

(b) CAROLUS (CHARLES) WETZEL - born 2 September 1798 - sponsors: Adam & Maria Wetzel

(c) REUBEN WETZEL - born 1 July 1805 - sponsors: Henry & Salome Jacoby

(9) ELISABETH WETZEL - born circa 1773. She married JACOB GRAUL, and was the only daughter of JOHN and JOHANNA WETZEL still living in 1809 when JOHN'S will was probated. Baptism record of one son found at Upper Milford Reformed Church:

(a) JOSEPH GRAUL - born 2 January 1800 - sponsors: John & Johanna Wetzel

(10) ADAM WETZEL - born circa 1775. He married MARIA circa 1797. A record of the baptism of one son was located at Lehigh Church:

----pg 378----

(a) JOHN WETZEL - born 30 June 1798 - sponsors: John & Johanna Wetzel

*NOTE: (8) JACOB WETZEL - SUSANNA

A JACOBY FAMILY HISTORY written by Henry S. Jacoby (1930) states that SUSANNA, a daughter of George & Anna Maria (Philip) Jacoby, was born 28 January 1772 in Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, Pa,, and married “JOHN” WETZEL. SUSANNA had a twin brother HENRY JACOBY whose second wife was SALOME (see sponsors for (C) in 1805. There appears to be no doubt that “JOHN” and “JACOB” are the same person.

The JACOBY history mentions only one daughter, LEAH WETZEL - born 1801 in Macungie Township. The family is said to have moved to Butler County, Ohio.

*NOTE: Preceding page (5) MAGDALENA WETZEL

GENEALOGY QUERY IN BERKS COUNTY NEWSLETTER re LEONARD SCHLAUCH indicated he moved to Grimsville in Berks County, Pa. New Bethel Union Church (in Grimsville) records were searched and a baptismal record was found for a fourth child born to MACDALENA:

(d) SALOME SCHLAUCH - born 27 February 1798 - sponsors: John & Elisabeth Weisser

LEONARD & MAGDALENA were sponsors for a child born to LEONARD JR. & his wife SUSANNA nee ARNOLD in September 1798.
