Re: Jarvis to Australia

I saw a posting on another forum and seems several folks are looking for the family of Hannah Jarvis who was transported to NSW in 1816.

Hannah Jarvis was convicted for being involved in some riots of 1816 (not sure of the details) and two of her children followed her at a later date. Here is what I have for a list of children left behind in UK:

I am doing research about my own Jarvis's in Southwold, Suffolk. Apparently Hannah is my 3rd GGMother who was married to Willam Jarvis, b abt 1780 (unknown birth place) and d. Jul 1841 in Mutford, Suffolk, United Kingdom.

Children:
Hannah Jr
Birth 2 Dec 1799 in Lowestoft,
Death 15 Jan 1879 in New Norfolk, , Tasmania, Australia
William Jarvis Jr
Birth 18 April 1801 in England
Death 26 Apr 1870 in Macquarie Plains, Tasmania, Australia
Elizabeth Jarvis
Birth 14 Feb 1803
Death unknown
Robert S Jarvis
Birth 28 Nov 1805 in Trowse, Norfolk, England
Death 11 Sep 1876
James Jarvis
Birth 27 Sep 1807
Death unknown
Mary Ann Jarvis
Birth 23 Jun 1809
Death unknown
Henry Jarvis
Birth abt 1815 in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England
Death

That should be a good start and hope it helps.

Hi Jackie
Just came across your post re: Jarvis family. My Jarvis side seems to originate in Salehurst in 1750's. A John Jarvis married a Susanna Kettle in 1772. Before that I have nothing. John and Susanna had 3 children that i can find all baptised in Salehurst William 1773, Hannah 1775 and Thomas 1777. William moved to the Worth area after marriage to Philadelphia Bailey and they had 10 children. If you are able to shed any light on John or before it would be great. I notice that Salehurst and Ticehurst are not that far away from one another, could there be a connection between the 2 families.
Paul

Jarvis from South Carolina & Madison

I am trying to locate the Jarvis who was the father of Seaborn Calvin, Braswell and Andrew Jackson? He had to have been born around 1780. I have seen multiple records for the parents being John B and Margaret Jemison Jarvis of West Virginia but this just does not make sense. All three sons were born in South Carolina and migrated to Madison Florida. The age gaps of the boys are 10 -13 years. Did John B have another "life" in South Carolina or is there another set of parents for these brothers? I have seen the name of Caroline Frances Scurfield associated with them as well. Also, any information that could be supplied on James N. Jarvis that enlisted in the Florida Infantry in Madison Florida but I believe died at Gettysburg. Any help would be greatly appreciated?
So confused.....

OK, I see what you are saying.
John Jarvis applied for a pension for his Rev War service but did not get land for his service.
I guess it is a mystery how he and whoever went with him relocated to that area of VA.
Ditto Solomon's move to KY.
I just assumed that they had some choice as to where they could take their land and so that's how they ended up in those places,...but ?
"In part, John's March 18, 1818pension application in Lewis County VA (WV) stated that he was then 68 years old, owned one little old house of little value and very doubtful title. He owned about twenty acres of land, very poor soil and very doubtful title.
John and his brother Solomon served together in the Revolution and came to Harrison County together in the late 1700's. Solomon moved to Kentucky before 1820."
This is from Walter Kreaps on RootsWeb.
I don't belong to Ancestry.com right now, but thought there was proof of John Jarvis's pension. But yeah, there are and were lots of John Jarvis's. There were Jarvis's in Kanawha Co WV at the same time and earlier (my mother's side is in that area).
Would love to be able to untangle. My niece went to England and made some inquiries about the Original John and Hannah, but all we got was as far as on Ancestry, Warwickshire area.
There was the John Jarvis who was married to Hannah. It seems that neither one of them ever left MD.
The sons John b 1750 and Solomon b 1753.
John settled in VA, now WV
Solomon settled in KY
I believe there are several other children of John and Hannah; Philip, Daniel, and so on, they seem to have either settled near Solomon or John JR.
Thanks for the reply. The information you posted is largely from the work of Don Norman, who wrote extensively on the families from this area. But he was mistaken about several of the things he wrote about the John Jarvis family. If you read through my long post, you will see that John Jarvis Jr. and his brother Solomon did NOT get pensions or bounty warrants for land because of Revolutionary War service. They did reportedly serve in the Virginia Navy under Capt. Mathews, but this service was not Federal, not in the Continental Line, and not rewarded by the Federal Government.

Hi and Happy New Year! My understanding through the research on RootsWEb is that John and Hannah landed in Baltimore in 1750. SON John and younger son Solomon both earned land grants from their Rev War service.
Here is the basic line that I compiled from them to me:
John Jarvis and Hannah Hill beget:

John Jarvis b 1750 and Solomon Jarvis b 1753

John Jarvis b 1750 and Sarah Hood beget

Thomas Figgins Jarvis b 1804 in Harrison VA

Thomas Figgins Jarvis b 1804 and Ailsey Bentley Connolly b: Abt 1806 in Harrison,Virginia beget:

George Solomon Jarvis b: Abt 1834 in Lewis,Virginia

George Solomon Jarvis b 1834 and Sarah E. Siers b: 29 MAR 1837 in Monroe, Virginia beget:

John Thomas Jarvis b: JAN 1866 in Calhoun,West Virginia

John Thomas Jarvis b 1866 and 2 Flora Brannon b: 11 JUL 1868 in Calhoun,West Virginia beget:

Matt Jarvis b: 20 FEB 1884 in Calhoun, West Virginia

Matt Jarvis b. 20 FEB 1884 and Maude Meadows b: 14 OCT 1886 in Calhoun,West beget:

AS Per 1930 US Census:

Tygart, Wood, West Virginia
Enumerated April 29, 1930
425/431
All born and parents born in West Virginia
Matt Jarvis Head MW 45 M at 27 Engineer, Ice Company
Maude Wife FW 44 M at 26

My grandfather was Matt Jarvis and his mother was Flora (Florie) and his father was John Thomas Jarvis.

I think Solomon got a land grant as well, but maybe not. He established himself in KY and there are lots of Jarvis's still in that area (as there are also near Parkersburg WV).
Here's the RootsWeb info I used:This is from RootsWEb’s WorldConnect Project: Walker Kreaps DECEMBER 2008 on Ancestry.com
• ID: I6969
• Name: John Jarvis
• Sex: M
• Birth: Abt 1750 in Belair, Baltimore, Maryland
• Death: 13 MAR 1826 in Lewis, Virginia
• Note:
from Don Norman:
John Jarvis, a son of John and Hannah (Hill) Jarvis, was born in Belair, Baltimore county, MD about 1750, although legend says that he was born on the high seas on the voyage from England to America. John died in Lewis County VA (WV) March 13, 1826. His grave marker in Lewis County WV reads "1757-1823 Continental Line Revolutionary War"
John served the Colonies in the American Revolution and was granted a land warrant in Harrison County, VA (WV) for his service.
He made application for pension as a Revolutionary veteran in both Harrison and Lewis counties in VA, stating that he had enlisted in the Revolutionary Army in Baltimore County, MD, and was assigned to naval duty in a rowing galley commanded by Captain Bennett Matthews.
This galley made trips to Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton and three trips to Little York. John then secured a substitute and later reenlisted on a French galley commanded by Captain Davies and later made another trip with Captain Matthews.
In part, John's March 18, 1818pension application in Lewis County VA (WV) stated that he was then 68 years old, owned one little old house of little value and very doubtful title. He owned about twenty acres of land, very poor soil and very doubtful title.
John and his brother Solomon served together in the Revolution and came to Harrison County together in the late 1700's. Solomon moved to Kentucky before 1820.
John married Sarah Ann Richards in Ann Arundel County MD December 23, 1779. Sarah was born in Hartford County MD about 1760 and died there before 1793. John married Sarah Hood O'Brien in Hartford County about 1798. Sarah was born in Hartford County about 1770 and was apparently a
widow. She died in Lewis County after the 1830 census.
J.D. Warfield's "Founders of Ann Arundel Co. MD", speaks of Sarah (Hood) [O'Brien] Jarvis and states, "There is no accounting for what happened between Sarah and John Jarvis. It would seem that she chose to remain in MD at the estate property of her ancestors, while he chose to
go west." Warfield must not have been aware of the death date of Sarah Ann (Richards) Jarvis.
John was listed in the 1783 Hartford County census as a head of a household of six white souls and one slave.
• Change Date: 17 JUL 2008 at 15:31:33

Father: John Jarvis b: 1720 in Hillshire,England
Mother: Hannah Hill b: 1725 in Hillshire,England

Marriage 1 December 1779: Sarah Ann Richards b: Abt 1760 in Hartford,Maryland
•	Note: _STATMARRIED

Marriage 2 Sarah Hood b: 1770 in Hartford,Maryland
•	Note: _STATMARRIED
Children
1.
I've not tried to identify the parents of John and Hannah Hill Jarvis [not gotten that far back yet] but Don Norman, who wrote a good deal of history on the families in the Hacker's Creek area of [West] Virginia makes this observation:
"One source lists John as possibly a son or step son of Daniel Jarvis, who was born about 1650 in London, England and married a Mrs. Jane Jarvis in that area about 1673. This is not likely, since Daniel would have been about 70 years old when John was born in 1720 and Jane would have been nearly as old."
http://hackerscreek.com/norman/JARVIS/JOHN.htm
Pls note, if you refer to this source, that it contains several errors about the John Jarvis line - in fact combining two separate men into one composite.

I have been working on decomposing the genealogical hybrid John Jarvis for some time now. Most of the work online, and also the comprehensive work by Don Norman, have incorrectly combined 2 John Jarvis into one. As you have outlined, the John Jarvis who md. Ann Richards [no mention of her being named Sarah] md. in Maryland and apparently remained in Maryland throughout his life. They had five children, and only five children, and she survived him. He did have Rev. War service qualifying her for a widow's pension.
The John Jarvis who reportedly md. Sarah Hood O'Brien was a different person, poss. dates 1757-1823 as noted on his modern day grave marker. His widow Sarah is likely the Sarah Jervice in the 1830 census of Lewis Co., VA. He was apparently the brother of Solomon Jarvis who went to KY. They both reported unusual military service on naval galleys under a Capt./Commodore Mathews, also both mentioning a John Monhon/Monahan.
Please refer to Conley Cottrell Family Tree in ancestry.com and story "Military Service..." under either John Jarvis for further details.
Hannah Jarvis, mother of Solomon, attested to his War Service in Fleming Co. KY in 1829. She was living in Fleming Co. and was said to be in her 99th year at the time. She is identified as Solomon's mother in his Rejected Pension File.
Solomon attests that he enlisted in Capt. Mathews' unit in Belair, MD.
So, it seems that Hannah [poss Hill] Jarvis and John Jarvis who were in BelAir MD abt. 1779 are the parents of Solomon Jarvis who went to KY, and John Jarvis who went to Harrison and Lewis Counties, VA. Haven't tried proving this yet beyond identifying Solomon's mother as Hannah Jarvis.
Neither the John Jarvis who reportedly md. Sarah Hood O'Brien; nor his brother Solomon who went to KY; received anything - land, pension, anything - for their service during the Rev. War period. The reason is outlined in Solomon's rejected pension file - his service in the naval galleys under Capt. Mathews was not service to the Continental Line. The service that he attested to would have been in the Virginia Navy; and as such, even if proven, would not qualify him for any federal benefits.
So, the modern day grave marker for John Jarvis in Westin, Lewis Co., WV is in error, as it credits him with service to the Continental Line.
I assume the Thomas you are trying to trace is the Thomas Figgens Jarvis, attributed to John Jarvis and Sarah Hood O'Brien Jarvis. He reportedly md. Ailsa Bentley Conley?
It does seem most likely that he belongs to this couple, but I've not found any proof.
Hope this helps a bit. If you have any documentation to add, I'd be delighted to see it.

Re: Jarvis family of Wales - Carroll Co. Ohio - Jackson Co. Ohio - Perry Co. Ohio

Hi Karen, I'm on a free one day pass on ancestry.ca
My greatgrandfather is John Jarvis from Wales, he married my grandmother's mother in the south of England, and he had four children with her Sybil, Elsie, May and John Jr Jarvis. He came to Canada (Quebec or later Ontario) and sent money back to his wife in Brighton where his wife and four children lived. My brother when visiting the family home in Brighton took a picture of it and it is a heritage building. My great grandmother was too scared to cross the ocean, so after many attempts of sending money back to her, to bring his wife and 4 children to Canada, he gave up. Years later my grandmother Sybil (Gossage) nee Jarvis came with her husband to Quebec and searched endlessly for her father in Quebec and in Canada. She never found him. The rest of the Jarvis clan stayed in Brighton. So my mother confirms my grandfather's name was John Jarvis and he was born and from Wales. I believe he was never found by my grandmother because he moved to the United States and probably remarried and had another family there. It is very hard to tract down family, as it seems records have not been kept as well as they have been in England. John Jarvis' wife in Brighton lived to age 90, and my mother, Vera Gladys Gossage is 91 years old. I don't know if this will be helpful to you as I wouldn't think John Jarvis would have recorded his first wife and family in Brighton, and there was no contact after the last time he sent money for them to come to Canada.

On 21st April 1891 a John Jarvis, builder of Wisbech bought land from Mr John Baker to build houses in Queens Road, Wisbech.

My five bedroom house was originally sold to a Miss Fanny Maria Smith for £625.
Jarvis, Philadelphia, PA, Camden, NJ

Elijah Jarvis was first found in 1787 living at 25 N. Nineth St. in Philadelphia. Married to Elizabeth. 1810 census shows they have 3 boys and 4 girls. Before 1813 Elijah had purchased a house in Camden, NJ, but died before June 1814. They had one known daughter, Eliza. I am trying to find the other children of Elijah and Elizabeth. There are many Jarvis' in both Camden area and Philadelphia but I can't seem to find a connection with their other children. The house that Jarvis owned in Camden went to his wife and then to their daughter. That house remained in the family for over 100 years.

I am hoping that someone will be able to connect their Jarvis family with mine and we can help each other with this family.

Janet

My grandmother lived in Harmony Township Washington County Missouri. Her father Jasper Jarvis and his wife Martha Rasnac were married and I have lost track. I wonder if she had siblings. I wish I could have asked the questions while she was still alive

Email is 1swngdncr@gmail.com

Does anyone have any kind of documented proof that Thomas Jarvis and Ailsey Connolly had a Son named Weeden H(arrison) Jarvis??? This is for a DAR application, so I need an actual document. Will, church record, land transfer, ANYTHING that specifically says they're father and son. It can't be anything that has not a documented source. Thank you.

Hello Amanda,
I'm your dad's cousin Molly Woods's son Jonathan and I think I may have tracked down your Jarvis great-grandfather. I've found a Thomas Jarvis on the 1911 Census who is working as an attendant at Graylingwell Hospital in Chichester but he's not Irish. I've added him to my family tree as your father's father and I've added some potential detail on him from the 1891 and 1911 Census, a Kent birth certificate, a record of him returning from Canada in 1949 and a Kent death certificate from 1961. I think it's probably the right chap. Hope that's useful.

Jonathan Woods
jonawoods@hotmail.com

Only 10 years late in reading your post. I think your information refers to the same people in my family. Will appreciate any more items. I have been looking for information regarding someone (John's wife, Lucy, or his mother...not clear on those details) who killed a first husband (or John's father) and the man's girlfriend when the two were found in bed at home and woman came home early. Understand she got off scott free. Thank you for contacting me. I just now returned to Ancestry.
