What info would you like?

I understand Lewis George died in 1960, aged 78, and was married to Florence Bagnall in 1902. They had at least 10 children I think, including Paul Bernard. Any info on the family would be useful.

I'm trying to discover where and when Lewis' father George (born 1855) died. I have lots of info on George's siblings and parents if you are interested. George was my GG uncle.

Cheers.

Greg

Fall of a House and Dreadful Loss of Life at Islington
From Berrow's Worcester Journal Saturday 17th February 1855

"On Sunday night a house in the Lower Road, Islington, fell with a crash that resounded through the neighbourhood. At first, the staircase and central portion of the house fell down. The conductor of the fire-escape, stationed on Islington Green, proceeded to the spot where he found a man, his wife and two children at the second floor front
window. He ascended, and brought down in safety the four persons whose lives were so much jeopardised. As other portions of the house continued
falling, the machine was obliged to be removed and immediately
afterwards the whole front of the building fell to the ground, burying
in the ruins a number of people. The following is the correct list of
the killed:- Thomas HODGES, aged 14 years; *George HODGES, aged 8 years;
Joseph GLOVER, aged 26 years; Jane GLOVER, aged 23 years, the wife of
the former; Joseph GLOVER, aged 4 years, a son of the before-named;
*Sarah LANE, aged 40 years; and Francis STOKER, a police-constable of
the N-division, No. 262, aged 38, who has left a widow and one child to
deplore his untimely death. The circumstances attending this officer's
death are of a very deplorable nature. The brave fellow, having heard
the cries of a woman in the house, rushed through one of the doors,
reached the place the woman was in, took her in his arms, and was in the
act of carrying her downstairs, when a portion of the side wall fell,
and both were forced down and instantly covered with the rubbish. When
extricated, both were found to be quite dead. The building in question
was a very old one, consisting of a double house, one half of which was
over a shop; the other half was over a gateway forming an entrance to
some stables at the back"

*The people who died were actually Samuel LANE aged 46 and James HODGES
aged 8.

The story & subsequent coroner's inquest was covered in great detail by
The Times and many other papers.

In the house at the time of the collapse were (amongst others) married
sisters Jane GLOVER nee JAUNCEY & Eliza Ann HODGES nee JAUNCEY and their
families. Benjamin JAUNCEY, brother of the 2 women, lived around the
corner and was injured trying to rescue his sisters and their families.
Eliza Ann & Charles HODGES and 2 of their children survived the collapse. Jane & Joseph GLOVER, Joseph GLOVER jnr and Thomas & James HODGES all perished.

It now turns out that Jane JAUNCEY was not my ancestor.

I had thought that she and her husband Joseph GLOVER were the parents of my Joseph GLOVER born around 1850. They did indeed have a son called Joseph GLOVER born around that time but all 3 died (along with 2 of Jane's nephews - sons of her sister Eliza Ann HODGES nee JAUNCEY- and 2 other people) when the building they were (2 Lower Street, Islington) collapsed around them on the 11th Feb 1855.

It was quite a celebrated case in its time and reports from the coroner's inquest appeared in many papers including The Times. This was mainly because one of the others who died was a policeman who had rushed into the building when it started to fall but had died when the staircase fell on top of him.

Jane's brother Benjamin JAUNCEY was one of the witnesses at the inquest as he had managed to rescue Eliza Ann, her husband and 2 children but just couldn't save their other 2 or Jane and her family. Also called as a witness was the elderly Joseph GLOVER father of Jane's husband.

I have several Shegog family trees going back to Ireland. One mentions Sarah Jane Manson Jauncey (nee Shegog) 1852-1908 who married William James Jauncey in 1866 in Eden. There is a note saying Sarah may have died of pneumonia. Also there is a Kate Jauncey, a nurse, who has done some research into the family history. I am interested in talking to her. I don't know anything else about the Jauncey's but I am interested in what you have. I would love a copy of Sarah's portrait painting.
Sarah Jane Shegog is the daughter of Robert hamilton Shegog 1815-1905 and Penelope Stevenson Manson 1832-1914. sarah is the eldest of 12 children. They are Sarah Jane, John 1854-1855, Catherine (Kate) Getty 1856-1925, Robert Getty 1858-1859, Robert (Bob) Getty 1860-1923, Elizabeth Bell 1864-1872, Margaret Manson 1865-?, Penelope 1868-?, Ellen Caldwell 1869-?, Annie (Anne) Francis 1870-?, George 1873-1873.
Robert Hamilton emmigrated to Melbourne from Ireland in 1851. He was a cabinetmaker. Made his fortune on the Vic. goldfields. The first 6 children were born in Collingwood Vic. Then they moved to the Bega area around 1863. 5 children were born in Eden. Then moved back to Melbourne in 1871 where the last child was born. He was a farmer at Twofold Bay. I believe he owned a farm on the Bega to Tathra Road.
Robert Hamilton had 10 siblings, 6 came to Australia (Vic.), 2 went to America and 2 stayed in Ireland. I am a descendant of his sister Mary Ann.
Robert's parents are George Shegog and Catherine St clair Getty, some of Catherine's family emmigrated to America and they are tied up to the famouse GETTY'S and also Gettysburgh and the American civil war.
I have lots of names if you are interested. Particulary Robert Hamilton Shegog's descendants.

I have a family tree from my great aunt which mentions Sarah Jane Manson Shegog as marrying William Jauncey(william's siblings: John (b.1843); Mary (b.1844)Elizabeth (b.1848); James (b.1850); Agnes (b.1851); Margaret (b.1852); Ellen (b.1854); Julia (b.1855). According to info I have, parents of William et al are John (b.1816, emmigrated to Sydney in 1833) married Mary Carew. I also have another tree which seems to continue back from John Jauncey leading back as far as William Jauncey (bur 29 May 1774 in Colwal Hereford).......would love any additional info re SHegog (we have a portrait painting of Sarah in the family)

I'd be keen to swap information with anyone also related to the Jauncey family from Western Australia and initially from Worcester.

I have some VERY interesting stories, indeed.

Dale

Hi

I am descended from the Jauncey line through my paternal line. For what it is worth, I recently had my DNA analysed by the Ancestry DNA service and it does show that my line was originally likely to come from the north of Spain or South of France area.

Dale

The name Jauncey crosses my research into the name Shegog. In 1866 a William James Jaunces married Sarah Jane Manson Shegog in Eden NSW. Kate Jauncey from that area is researching her family, I believe. Don't have any more information re the Jauncey family. Hope this little bit helps.

I have an ancestor called Eliza Cook Jauncey who married my ggg grandfather Joseph James QUEMBY. She ws born in Sydenham, Lewisham, Kent and they were married at St Andrew's, Lambeth, Surrey in 1874. I do not have any information on Eliza's ancestors and would be interested if you have anything at all on her forbears. I can provide you with her descendants on my father's side of course. We did have another relative who did some research and came up with the name Stebbington, but I found that Eliza's mother was probably Elizabeth Steventon. This may all be totally wrong as the birth records for England that I can get only go back to 1837 and she was born between 1813 and 1818 as far as I can gather. Have you any information on this part of the family? I would be really glad to have it if so!

Best wishes

Angela Quemby
