Hello everybody:

I am a little late in posting this. Regarding the use of Catren or Catrina for Catherine Ashmun, in our family there has always been the tradition that when Robert Ashmun arrived in what is now New York, it was still Dutch, and he and his wife adopted Dutch language and ways. That would account for her name.

Do you have any history on the Jaycox's of Missouri? We have so far traced our history as far as the Civil War, but are looking to trace it even more. I don't know much but my father has our book.

Re: Francis Jaycocks

Unless I am wrong, I believe that the marriage of Deacon John Jaycox and his 2 marriages have been turned around, and documented erroneously. I have researched this a very long time and found a great amount of proof to substantiate it in fact. John was married first to Sarah HAZARD, and second (after Sarah's death in 1836)to Sophia Sheffield. Sarah Hazard died in 1836.She is buried in Riverside Cemetery in SNB. Deacon John, deacon of the First Baptist Church of SNB, NY (quite aged by this time, married Sophia Sheffield 2nd) If this is correct, it proves to me, Sarah HAZARD was indeed the mother of all Deacon John's children. all of them were born before Sarah Hazard died in 1836, so Sophia could NOT have been the mother.

Also According to the 1860 & 1870 census's (Sophia is widowed in 1870) and age 74. She is living in SNB with the Robert & Finnette Wilber family. An Ephriam Houcks is 76 is also living with them. I take this to be a very good friend or companion perhaps of Sophia's, since they are about the same age. I could be wrong though. He was a neighbor in 1860. It is theory only.

Getting to my point, Apparently, Sophia was young enough to be a daughter of Deacon John's when they married after 1836, that is, if her age is correct in the 1860 & 1870 census. (If anyone else wants to debate my theory) I politely welcome it.

The reason I know this to be accurate is, that I do Sergeant research. I have from my own personal Sergeant History that Ambrosia Sergeant b. 1827, d/o John Sergeant & Isabel Elizabeth JACOX, that Isabel was the daughter of Deacon John and Sarah HAZARD. I would think Ambrosia would definitely know by her own mother who her grandmother was!It was lsited as Sarah. Isabella is reportedly born in January 20, 1809. All the children were born before 1834, making Sarah the mother of all of Deacon John's children, and Sophia, being a step-mother! My outline..thus far(I have much more in generations) I am releasing 2nd generation to Deacon John only. he was the son of Francis Jaycox and Mary Wiltsie(or the correct spelling for Maria/Mary)

Somewhere along the line the "Y" was in my own records have been dropped, although I did find it spelled both ways quite often in census's etc....
Unless I am wrong, I believe that the marriage of Deacon John Jaycox and his marriages have been turned around, and documented erroneously.I have researched this a very long time and found a great amount of proof of it in fact! John was married first to Sarah HAZARD, and second (after Sarah's death in 1836)to Sophia Sheffield. Sarah Hazard died in 1836.She is buried in Riverside Cemetery in SNB. Deacon John, deacon of the First Baptist Church of SNB, NY (quite aged by this time, married Sophia Sheffield 2nd) According to the 1860 & 1870 census (she is widowed in 1870) and age 74. Apparently, she was young enough to be a daughter of Deacon John's when they married after 1836, that is, if her age is correct in the 1860 & 1870 census. (If anyone else wants to debate my theory) I politely welcome it.

The reason I know this to be accurate is, that I do Sergeant research. I have from my own personal Sergeant History that Ambrosia Sergeant b. 1827, d/o John Sergeant & Isabel Elizabeth JACOX, that Isabel was daughter of Deacon John and Sarah HAZARD. I would think Ambrosia would definitely know by her mother who her grandmother was!

FRANCIS FLEWELLING m. 1756 in QUEBEC?

Well, the names and dates suggest mainland New York on the lower Hudson, i.e. Dutchess, Westchester, Orange Counties; or possibly Connecticut. It seems very unlikely to me that an man of English origins would marry a woman, who seems to be of Dutch origins anywhere in Quebec in 1756. England and France were on the threshold of the Seven Years War (1756-1763) and the English were not to gain control of Quebec City until 1759. You may just be looking in the wrong place. The Loyalists mostly went to what are now New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Ontario in 1783-4.

TAM

I have reason to believe that Francis and Grace Jeacocks (pick your own spelling) lived in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England at the ened of the 1500's and in the early 1600's. Also in nearby Bishopton, and other places nearby. Four of their children seem to be Thomas, Francis, William and Catherine (called 'Catern", bpt. Bishopton 1613) came to America, possibly through Massachusetts ca. 1630-35, or possibly through Connecticut. Some are later found on Long Island, New York, especially around Hempstead and Jamaica. Catern m. Robert Ashman. Jeacockes moved from Long Island to Westchester Co., Dutchess Co., and possibly Ulster Co., NY in the early to mid 1700's. This is a vague recollection, but it might help.

Thomas A. Murray

Francis Jaycocks

Hi Marilyn,
I would appreciate some help. Basically, I am trying to prove Catern (Jaycocks) Ashman was a Jaycocks, and was the Katheren, daughter of Francis and Grace. What I have is too fragmented. I now think that the Francis in Stratford, CT was the same in Warwickshire, and I have found that he was in trouble in Connecticut as well. It is difficult to trust compiled genealogies as I recognize some of the errors; especially those one I made over 10 years ago, and which are coming back to haunt me.
It's quite late, and I have been working for over 10 hours in composing this darn article. I hope this gets to you as I tried it as http://schoolbell.ulink.net, but that didn't work.
I use "Jaycocks" as the best compromise spelling, and I call Katheren "Catern" as that seems to have been her nickname, if not her actual name. I do know a great granddaughter was called Catern, so I have accepted it as applicable and not a Dutch variation.
If this doesn't get to you, then I'll try tomorrow through the forum.

Tom

PS It didn't, so I pasted it here. Sorry, Marilyn; I'm new at this so I'm not sure if the address you gave me was supposed to be an URL or E-mail address. It didn't work as either. You could leave a message at gwenbonniemurray@hotmail.com.

Tom

Can you please check for Francis Jaycox b. abt. 1787, I am most interested in whether his daughter was Mary or Elizabeth who married a Samuel S. Raymond (abt. 1848). They resided in Putnam Valley, New York. My information indicated that Elizabeth was a Jacobs, but find her living with Francis Jaycox in 1860.
Thanks so much.
Lisa

Hi Mike, Any relation to Emma Jaycock who married William Wilfling in the late 1800's prior to their 1st born in 1898 also called Emma. They lived in London. Awaiting Emma's birth certificate to find her father's name. If they emigrated it would have been after my grandmother was born in 1908, but probably later. Regards, Vivienne

Lee,

Can only find reference to a Charles H. Jaycox born 1874 at Eton, England, vol. 3a. Page 471 to obtain birth certificate from FamilyRecords, London or Register Office, Southport. Email:certificate.services@ons.gov.uk

Though it makes him only 27 years old at 1901.

If you can guess his approx. age at death you can guess his approx. birthdate - give that to the relevant records dept for a search to be carried out. You can pay online I think it is approx. £9.00 per surname.

There is also a Jaycock (and derivatives of, eg Jeacock, Jaycox) members site you may want to check that out to share information on the family name. Check Rootsweb for Jaycock members site.

Regards, Vivienne.

Follow-up for this Jaycox lineage

More information is coming to light in early 2006, this family is GERMAN. David Jaycox (senior) lived to be 100 years of age according to his great-great granddaughter (Eliza Jane Jaycox Haven) who dictated info in the 1930s to family researchers. His son, Isaiah, in an early census lists an elder male. It was also told that, David (the junior), Eliza's father, had a very heavy accent and was difficult to understand.

Jaycox Jacox Jaquash Jeacock Jacocks in V/WV/OH/KS

Jaycox family. Jaycox was pronounced like 'squash' with a 'j' in front of it. Some say this was French, Indian or German. The various spellings for this family are only as good as the English interpreter! Jaquash = Jaycox. Here is the lineage proven to date:

David and Lilly Smith, around Greenbrier/Bath/Pocahontas West Virginia and Virgina late 1700;s. Children: Susannah married to Daniel Kellison (check Kellison message board), Hannah married to a Smith, and Isaiah married to Mariah. Do not know the surname of Mariah, could be Slaven(s) or possibly a Kellison? Legal issues with Daniel Kellison, Jr. provides info, about 1826 in Greenbrier about the time Pocahontas was formed, court proceedings between Daniel Kellison and David Jacox over land deed/title.

Isaiah and Mariah Jacox moved to Jackson County, OH around 1830's. I don't have all the children's name for this posting. Nancy married a Neff ?, David married Rebecca Carter/Canter, William married Polly Ann Carter a/k/a Dolly Ann and Mary, Elizabeth married French Carter.

French Carter and wife Elizabeth Jacox and William Jacox and wife Polly Ann Carter moved to Douglas County and Leavenworth County, Kansas. There both William and Elizabeth changed their names BACK to what the felt were their correct surnames, JaQuash. This is documented in the pension application of Polly Ann (then Gausnell or Gosnell as she remarried) as William was in the Civil War. These families are near each other in census records.

Hope this helps confusion and putting pieces together on this lineage. Anyone have more, please let me know. Also contact at whisperwhodares@hotmail.com and by phone (314) 781-9646.

Gary,
I would love any information you can share on the Jaycox family. I am a descendant of Isaiah Jaycox thru William and Mary "Polly" Ann Carter Jaycox. I have information from the national archives I would be happy to share. When William was called to serve during the Civil War (from Kansas) he had to enlist under the name JaQuash and provide documentation that the family name had earlier been changed to Jaycox. After that he and his children used the JaQuash name. It's also spelled Jayquash at times.... interesting. Look forward to hearing from you

Sherry
