According to Reany, Jeal is Anglo-Saxon and derived from the characteristic of angry/jealous. I answered to that but grew up eventually!

My grandfather, William Warington Jeal, came from Epsom, Surrey, and lived and died in Walton-on-Thames. He was English but married Alice Scheurer, whose ancestry was German.

Are you still there? I just discovered your original post from 10 years ago! I live in Canada. My maternal grandmother was a Jeal from Dorking, Surrey...her entire family emigrated to Canada in 1905. I have traced the family and its collateral lines a fair amount. It's clear that those Dorking Jeals originally came from Warnham, Sussex. Could I compare notes with you sometime to see if there is a connection? There is a myth circulating in our family that the Jeal surname was created from the first letter of the names of four Huegonot brothers who fled to England to escape persecution in their home land.

Hi Debbie, just found this post while trawling the net, Alfred Tyrus Jeal was my 1st cousin 3 times removed. We share Adolphus Jeal & Elizabeth Boxall as common ancestors.

Hi Robert,

I'm trying to chase my ancestry back through my Nan's line - her mother was Mary E Jeal, who married Norman William Tite in Greenwich in 1925. I believe Mary was born in 1905, but can't find anything about her at all beyond her birth and the marriage, and wondered whether you had come across anything in your research about this marriage?

I do not know the birthplace of Thomas Jeal Halkett but I do know a woman in England who has been tracking the Halkett family back to the 10th century. Her name is Jean Halkett Swift. I will pass along your question to her.

Had cousins living in bermensey london guinnes buildings there fathers name was James Jeal and i remember a cousin called Rita Jeal Her mothers name was lilie. lost contact in the 60s.

This unusual and interesting name is a dialectual variant of the pre 10th century biblical given name Julian or Julius, which was borne by a number of early saints. The derivation is from the Latin "Iulianus", meaning hairy or downy, and was originally a Roman Clan name for a tribal family renowed for their long, flowing, locks, of which Julius Caesar was a member. My father and grandfather was born in Wales but greatgrandfather was born in Gloucester and then his father was Surrey. I don't think the name originated in Wales. Could you tell me the names of your ancestors as they may be related to mine.

Thomas Jeal b 1850 2q Petworth Sussex

i believe his parents are Henry Jeal 1799-1878 and Dinah Bridgwater 1798-1881.
Dinah Foster was a widow and her maiden name was Bridgewater.

Henry Jeals parents were Edward Jeal b 1750 and Ann Botting of Slinford West Sussex.

there is a family reunion in Christchurch New Zealand on november sunday 23 2008 for Jeal and other family links.

My Fathers' side is JEAL, and my Mothers' side is GEAL.
I have traced both sides back to my Great-great-great grand parents, with no connection.
I think it's more that a coincidence.

My G.Grandfather,George Richard Jeal was born in Gloucester in 1860 I don't know of any others but if you can give me any details of your Jeals I can see if they match any of mine where I haven't got places of birth.

Sorry, but according to "Fairburns Crests" there is not a 'coat of arms' or crest associated with the surname JEAL anywhere in the country.

If you manage to find a connection with Ireland, there is just one entry for a crest for GEALE in Ireland.

im great grandad was called Robert (bob) Jeal and got married to my great nan Bessie hollyoak. i dnt know if still board is still running but Robert and Bessie had a son called David, that is if it is the same Robert Jeal. but it sounds like we cud be related

Harry Bendigo Jeals daughter May married my ancestor Randell stanley Anderson 1901 Bendigo. I have copy of marriege certificate. Know they had one son David Randell Anderson born 1802. He died aged 71 in Victoria. Have info on Randells family too. Happy to share

Perhaps we are related. My father Thomas Jeal, grandson of Thomas Jeal, born in Edenbridge, Oct.24, 1835, later moved to Croydon, then the whole family moved to Canada in 1888. Thomas' father was John Jeal christened 20 Jan 1805 in Edenbridge, Kent and he married Sarah ? born in 1803 in Gadalmiry, Surrey. John was a lath render in the 1841 census. I have just discovered that my g.g.grandfather William Jeal came from Horsley. In the 1881 census he was listed living in Monmouth with his wife Stella. Born around 1836 in Horsley. Any connection to your family.
