According to Reany, Jeal is Anglo-Saxon and derived from the characteristic of angry/jealous. I answered to that but grew up eventually!

My grandfather, William Warington Jeal, came from Epsom, Surrey, and lived and died in Walton-on-Thames. He was English but married Alice Scheurer, whose ancestry was German.

Peter,
Are you still there? I just discovered your original post from 10 years ago! I live in Canada. My maternal grandmother was a Jeal from Dorking, Surrey...her entire family emigrated to Canada in 1905. I have traced the family and its collateral lines a fair amount. It's clear that those Dorking Jeals originally came from Warnham, Sussex. Could I compare notes with you sometime to see if there is a connection? There is a myth circulating in our family that the Jeal surname was created from the first letter of the names of four Huegonot brothers who fled to England to escape persecution in their home land.
Susan McLaughlin
Canada

Hi Robert,

I'm trying to chase my ancestry back through my Nan's line - her mother was Mary E Jeal, who married Norman William Tite in Greenwich in 1925. I believe Mary was born in 1905, but can't find anything about her at all beyond her birth and the marriage, and wondered whether you had come across anything in your research about this marriage?

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated!!

Best wishes,

Tracy

Re: The Jeals

Surname: Jeal
This unusual and interesting name is a dialectual variant of the pre 10th century biblical given name Julian or Julius, which was borne by a number of early saints. The derivation is from the Latin "Iulianus", meaning hairy or downy, and was originally a Roman Clan name for a tribal family renowed for their long, flowing, locks, of which Julius Caesar was a member. The name was probably introduced into England by the French after the 1066 Norman Invasion, or perhaps by the later Crusaders on their return from the Holy Land. In medieval times the name was borne in the same form by women, hence the modern girls' name Gillian. In the modern surnames the spellings include Jell, Geal, Gell, and Gelle. In England the name attained such favour that Jack and Jill took the place of Godric and Godivu as the representatives of the sexes. Early examples of the surname recordings include at St. Annes church, Blackfriars, London, John Jeal was christened in 1682 and later Anne Geal was christened in 1699. The first recorded spelling of the family name is believed to be that of John Jelle, which was dated 1296, in the "Subsidy Rolls of the county of Sussex". This was during the reign of King Edward 1st, known as "The Hammer of the Scots", 1272 - 1307. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Looking for more information on Annie Jeal (born around 1900) and James Gibson, who married in Stepney in 1926. James may have been my great-uncle; it would be nice to hear from anyone who can tell me about them.

Hi there

Sorry, but according to "Fairburns Crests" there is not a 'coat of arms' or crest associated with the surname JEAL anywhere in the country.

If you manage to find a connection with Ireland, there is just one entry for a crest for GEALE in Ireland.

Chris in 1066
