Hi. My name is Dee. My g-g-g-Grandfather was Henry Harvey Jeffares. He was born in Wexford, Ireland in 1786 and died in Georgia in 1863. He was smuggled out of Ireland with his brother Robert at the age of 12 during the Irish Rebellion. They were nailed in crates with hole drilled in them for air. After arriving in America his brother died. He was raised in the Fairfield, SC area. He moved to Georgia 1830 - 1840. He was a teacher in Nancy Creek and a recorder at the Nancy Creek Primitive Baptist Church for more than 20 years. Nancy Creek is still operating today. He is buried there. Hope that helps a little. I learned a lot of history be Googling him. There is a lot of info about the Jeffares on the net. Let me know if I can help anymore. Have other info about Jeffares.

I will need more information from you about your family to see if there is a connection, but we are also wondering about the origin of Jeffares in our family. The original Christopher Jeffares McCombe was born 1881 in Baleek, county Armagh, northern Ireland. He emigrated to Canada in early 1900's and was a prominent Methodist minister. He had a con Christopher Jeffares McCombe, who is around 80, lives in the Toronto area now. We are part of a large family with additional Jeffares who are grandchildren and great grand-children. I hope that helps. Tell me more about your family, especially what you know about the origin of Jeffares name.

Dear Paul,
I wonder if you have any information on the Wexford Jeffares family that emigrated from there to England and the US in the late 1800's. US names are John Joseph known as Joe, Richard, Anastasia (m. Jeff Sadd) and other siblings are William, Mary, Bridget and another male whose name escapes me at the moment.

The family is listed on the 1890 census in England, which is how I discovered the other siblings. Had not known about anyone but "Uncle Willie" and the US sibs.

My father was John Aidan Jeffares, born in Dublin due to his mother's ill health, and he joined Joe and Richard when he was 11.

Hope you can help. And Happy New Year to you!
Betty Fitterman

Just logged in after many years and I was delighted to see that you have been researching Jeffares in Wexford. My grandfather was John Joseph Jeffares, who emigrated to the US along with his brother Richard and sister Anastasia. There were four other children in the family as well, including Bridget, Mary, William and another male child.

Do you know anything about this family from Wexford? Thanks for any help you can give.
Best Regards,
Betty Jeffares Fitterman

Hello,

I am a Jeffares in Ireland too, we live in Wicklow. My family and my uncle's family are the only Jeffares we know. My grandfather was Dermot Philip Jeffares and my grandmother was Patricia Jeffares (nee Vignoles). My grandfather was originally from Wexford and had a brother George. Beyond this, I don't know very much, though I do know that Wexford is a stronghold for the Jeffares name!

The reason I replied to this particular thread was that a relative of mine (I'm not sure what relation exactly, unfortunately!) moved to Canada some decades ago, and I believe there's a connection with an Egan family, resident in Toronto.

I would love to know more about the family tree. It's not the easiest of trees to track down!

Shelly

I live in Oregon, but Scott and Kathy are on the East Coast. Kathy has a church in Corning, NY. Scott is an IT Program Manager in Virginia. His wife's name is also Karen (same middle name too). They have 2 children: Alison (lives in Maryland with husband and daughter) and Leah (lives and works in NYC). I am recently widowed, no children, but very involved with Alison and Leah. We would all be glad to exchange photos and information. We would also like information on other family members, such as the family of Robert McCombe, and of Margaret McCombe Shields.

Thank you for responding. I should have said I am the granddaughter of John Henry McCombe, daughter of John Harold (also a Methodist minister), sister of Kathleen McCombe (also a Methodist minister) and of Scott McCombe. Jack (my father) passed away in 2001.
I have been researching the link between Jack and Jeff, as their paths seem to have taken different directions soon after each came to the U.S. Jack and his wife (my grandmother) became evangelists in Ohio and New York, and your father went on to build huge churches in Cleveland and elsewhere. I also saw reference to the fact that your brother and at least one sister died young--from what? What are the names of your children and grandchildren and where do they live? How did you wind up back in Canada? Do you have any news clippings of your father (or anyone else) you could copy and send me? Thank you again! I might have more questions for you later.

I am indeed the son of Jeff McCombe, brother of Jack. Both my dad and Jack were ministers in the Methodist Church. My brother, Calvin Jeffares, died long before I was born. My sisters, Noreen (Jenkins) and Alyce (Nicholson) have been dead for many years. I was a late surprise arrival June 15, 1930. I am the last of my generation. I have a wife, Effie (which, believe it or not was also my mothers name) and have three daughters, six grandchildren, and as of this past June, two great-grandchildren by different grandchildren.
We live in Markham, Ontario, Canada, a suburb of Toronto. Where do you live? Are you the descended from Jack Jr.or Betty McCombe?
I should love to exchange information and pictures with you. I hope that I have managed to attach a photo of Effie and me on a Caribbiean cruise last winter.
Cheers, Jeff (Jr.)

Thanks Marie,
Yes Dad had been unwell on & off for the last five years. He pretty much gave up on life after Mum passed away. Its very sad but at least he is where he wants to be now.
Thanks for the further info on the family tree. Much appreciated.
I noticed there where a few more Irish records available & how fab to find it all out. You have found out loads well done. I have a copy of a few birth certificates & also some war documents. If you would like to see any I can forward by e mail so please just ask.
Will try & keep in touch. Hope all well.
Love Sandra x

Hi Sandra,
Hope you're keeping well. I was so sorry to hear about Uncle Richard, I know he'd been poorly for some time, as Uncle John always kept us up to date.
Tracing the Jeffears family is painfully slow, largely due to the lack of proper records. Anyway, so far I've discovered Richard (our great grandfather) and his wife Ellen - as you already know. They were married in Liverpool in 1876, as was his sister Annie Marie (May), she married a George Ollerhead (Hollerhead) and they lived in Birkenhead. They also had a brother George, who like Richard was a compositor. I've never been able to find very much out about George. They also had a younger brother Christopher, he was a policeman, and he was married to an Ellen Forbes, after they married they returned to Ireland and settled in Limerick. It was finding them that confirmed the name change, for once back in Ireland his name is recorded as Jeffares. At the moment I'm trying to track down our great-great grandfather, also called Christopher, all I know is that he was a carpenter. A lot of Irish records have just been put on line, so hopefully something will turn up. That's all I have for now, but I'll keep you posted.
Take care,
Marie xx

Hi Marie,
Its been a long time since I have contacted you. Not been on here for a while.
I hope you are well & I would be interested to know how much further you have got with the family tree.
I would have thought you had heard by now but unfortunately my father Richard Jeffears passed away on the 25th June this year. Its been a tough time & I guess I am back doing the family tree to occupy myself a little.
I did find a little while back a copy of Forms & Wills from 1601 - 1800 & on there was a Jeffares, Christopher, Old hall, Wexford & then underneath it said in brackets (or Jeffears) So I am guessing thats the name change!
I have got as far back as Richard Jeffears who was married to Ellen Molloy (only found out about the Molley When I ordered a copy of george henrys birth certificate).
Anyway i would be grateful for any help if you have gone back further.
Love
Sandra xx

Hi, just read your post - my mothers maiden name was Jeffears and she and her family lived in Liverpool until war broke out in the 1940's. My great grandfather was an Irish immigrant, he and his brother George were both compositors - we were also lead to believe that the family had links with France, just wondering if we could be part of the same family?

My father's name and my name are both Christopher Jeffares McCombe. My father was born in Belleek, County Armagh, in 1881, one of twelve children (and they weren't even Catholic). I know nothing about the history of the Christian name Jeffares being used in our family, and the coincidence of the extended us of Christopher as well.

If anyone can add to our limited knowledge it would be much appreciated.

C.
I may be able to help you. Two brothers arrived here in the mid 1800's and we are all descended from them! It's easy enough, who is your father, who is his father etc I am 4th generation My father, Bob was born in Taradale in 1886, his father was Joseph, and his father was Thomas. They are all buried in the Puketapu Cemetery in Taradale near Napier. I have a copy of the Family Tree and am happy to give you a copy. It might be fun to round up a few relatives for the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the family in NZ. jeffares.robert[at]gmail[dot]com gets me. I am not at home so i can't put my hand on this stuff today. Where are you?

Interesting, my mother's family name was Jeffears, they lived in Liverpool, England (which has a very high Irish population being the closest English city to Belfast and Northern Ireland) and I was always told that they descended from Huguenot supporters of William of Orange, being protestants. She was born in 1912, her father was a compositor (or typesetter) with the Liverpool Echo and died as a result of injuries received in France in WW1. She subsequently married my father whose family name was Harding. I moved to New York City 30 years ago.

Hi Stacy,
Any information you have would be most welcome as I keep coming up against the proverbial brick wall! As I mentioned in my original posting my great grandfather was Richard Jeffears (born c1850). The only documentation/records I can find for him are from 1876 onwards, when he married Ellen Molloy in Liverpool. His sister Annie Marie also married in Birkenhead in the same year. I know that they had a brother George as he also pops up on later census returns. From Richards marriage certificate I found that his father was called Christopher and was a carpenter, although by the time of Richards marriage he was recorded as 'deceased'. The family 'legend' has always been that my grandfather changed the spelling of his surname when he came over to England but no-one knew what the original spelling was. I did have a mini breakthrough when I found a marriage recorded for Christopher Jeffeares (South Stoneham 1889) I believe that he may also be Richards brother as his father is recorded as Christopher - deceased Carpenter. But, other than this marriage certificate I can't find anything further for Christopher or his wife Ellen (nee Forbes). I've tried checking the records available for Ireland but without success. The biggest problem I have is the lack of data, no-one in my family has any dates of birth for our great grandparents and there's even a difference of opinion as to whether they came from Wexford or Waterford! We aren't the most organised bunch. I'm pretty sure that the original family name was Jeffares but I just need to find something to confirm the connection, anything you have would be gratefully received.
Regards,
Marie
