Looking back through my notes I find that the connection is that the William that enlisted was 16 years old in 1781 which would subtract to the 1765 birth in Dudley and there's no other likely candidate.

I'll take another look at the on-line copy of his pension folder when I have a chance to go to the library as I may have missed something the first time through.
