I have just read your message from back in 2004 regarding name changes to Jeffrey. I have at least one Roberts relative who changed his name to Jeffrey when he emigrated in 1865. He came from North Wales but family legend has it that they originally came from Scotland in the 18th Century for political reasons. Others left in Wales were also changed from Roberts>Jeffrey and the name Jeffrey abounds as a middle name in my family, even among the women.
You mention the name Jessop........this was the married name of one of the Roberts family who emigrated to Canada in about 1910. No trace of Jews but our family tend to be small and dark haired.
