William Jeffrey

I am looking for the origins of William Jeffrey (born abt 1780) and his first wife, Virginia Jane McFarland. I find them in Wythe County, VA in the late 1790's to form Tazewell County and the early 1800's tax lists of Tazewell County, VA. About 1813 he moved to what is now Boone County, WV, and is well documented after this time. The 1850 Logan tax list, shows his age as 70 and born in VA. The 1860 Logan tax list shows his age as 76 and born in North Carolina. I have been searching for a birth record, marrige record, or who their parents are, for many years. Any info would be very much appreciated.

Willim R, Jeffrey, 1836 , IN> IA,, May Olds Jeffrey

WILLIAM R. JEFFREY, capitalist, came to Washington County, when a small boy, and has since made it his home. He was born in Fayette County, Ind., Feb. 22, 1836, and is the son Asahel and Nancy (Stephens) Jeffrey. HIs father was born on Long Island in 1812 and moved to Indiana at a very early day, and there married Nancy Stephens, March 16, 1835. They were the parents of seven children, five of whom are yet living, as follows: William R., of Washington, Iowa; Marion, a farmer; Jeremiah, a resident of Wymore, Neb.; Jane, the wife of Frank James, express agent, Greenfield, Adair Co., Iowa; Hiram, stock and grain dealer in Page County, this State. Asahel Jeffrey in early life was a Democrat, but in consequence of the position of the party on the slavery question, became a Republican, casting his first vote with that party in favor of Abraham Lincoln for the Presidency. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and died in March, 1887, at his home in Washington. He came to this county in 1843 and located in Oregon Township, where he entered 200 acres of land with a land warrant, and where he resided until his death. Few men were better known or more highly respected by those who knew him than Asahel Jeffrey. A sketch of him will appear in this work.

William R. Jeffrey was the first child of Asahel and Nancy Jeffrey, and came with his parents to this county when a lad of seven years. Notwithstanding his tender years, he helped haul the logs to build the first school-house in Oregon Township, and attended the first school. It was three miles from his home, but for three months in winter he was in daily attendance. Here he grew to manhood, assisted his father on the farm, and by home study as well as in the school, obtained a fair education. He engaged in teaching school himself until the call of President Lincoln in 1862 for "300,000 more," when he dropped his books and enrolled as a member of Co. C, 19th Iowa Vol. Inf., was appointed Color Sergeant, and as such marched with the regiment to the front. The regiment rendezvoused and was mustered into the service at Keokuk, from which place it was sent to St. Louis and from there to Springfield, Mo., on a raid after the bushwhackers infesting that portion of the State, and who were commanded by Marmaduke, who in 1884, was elected Governor of Missouri.

While on the battle-field where Gen. Lyon was killed a few months previously, the regiment received orders for a forward movement, and with others engaged the rebel army at Prairie Grove, Dec. 7, 1862, where Mr. Jeffrey was wounded by a piece of shell near the knee, carrying away a portion of the flesh, and with it the nerve, thus disabling him for life. While lying upon the field one of his toes was shot off. The battle raged until night, the men sleeping upon their arms, expecting to renew the engagement the next morning. When daylight came the rebels were not to be seen, having disappeared in the night. Mr. Jeffrey had his wounds dressed in the field hospital, where he remained for a short time and was then sent to Fayetteville, then to Springfield, Mo., and then to St. Louis, where he remained until Nov. 2,1 863, when he was honorably discharged.

Returning home and being incapacitated for outdoor employment, he began teaching school, in which profession he continued until the fall of 1864, when he was elected Recorder of Washington County, and was re-elected in 1866, serving for four years. While Recorder he compiled the abstract books of Washington County, and on the expiration of his term of office engaged in the abstract and real-estate business, in which he continued until 1882 with good success. In the organization of the Washington County Savings Bank, Mr. Jeffrey took an active interest and was one of its principal stockholders. He was elected its first Vice President, a position which he yet holds, and is also one of the Directors.

Mr. Jeffrey was first married in Louisa County, Iowa, in 1860, to Miss May Olds. By this union there were four children: Lillie, the wife of S. R. Wallace, of Washington; William R., Jr., a student at Mt. Pleasant; Hiram G., of Harlington, Neb., and A. P., a farmer in this county. Mrs. Jeffrey died March 9, 1869. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a sincere Christian woman. Mr. Jeffrey's second wife was formerly Miss Lida Wright, by whom he has four children—Mertie, Kate, Jessie and John H. In politics, Mr. Jeffrey is a Republican, and is a member of the G.A.R

Portrait and Biographical History of Washington County, Iowa
pages 616-617
Jeffrey surname

I have been tracing my Jeffrey family, from IN, for several years. I was wondering if anyone has come across the Jeffrey name that was chaged - from maybe Jessop to Jeffrey? my mom said her dad was very dark and looked like he might have had some Jew in him..during WWII, he would not talk or let the family talk about the Germans or the Jews in his house. I have heard that the Jeffrey name could be Scottish, English or maybe even Irish. Does anyone know about the possibility of being Jewish? Thanks Seria

I believe that I have an ancestor with the surname of Jeffrey. The only information I have is that the family originally came from Kelso or thereabouts. They apparently bred bulls and my ancestor was sent to Canada in about 1890 (I am very unsure of the date). I have no more information but does this mean anything to anyone?

Norman French perhaps, Geoffrey?
There is an uncanny resemblance between my uncle David and John Jeffrey the Scottish International Rugby player, who is from the borders, does anyone else have the rather generous 'Jeffrey nose'.

Hello! I believe I may have a little information on one line of the Jeffrey Family in Arkansas. My great-grandfather was W. J. Jeffrey who was married to Hettie L. Hodge. I have only heard him go by "Will" or "W. J." I am thinking that William A. Jeffrey in Arkansas was his father, my g-great grandfather, that was married to Susanna Spencer. I have a few pictures, but none of W. J. and none of those are not labeled well. Does anyone have any info to add? Would like to find out if anyone has info available .

Thanks so much,
Lana Douglas

My ancestorial grandmother who was full blood Cherokee her name was Snythia Jeffery born in 1801 Ky. Her father's name is Jesse Jeffery. Her mother's name is unknown. I don't have any Indian names which I am looking for. They moved to Ark during the removal around 1820's. Snythia married a white man by the name of James Brickey in 1820 in Ky. The area that they settle in was Van Buren Co.,Ark. Any info would be great. Renee---------rbluedove27@aol.com

I'm interested in any possible information about Charles E. Jeffrey who I believe (based on census forms) was born about 1854 in New York and died before 1930 in West Virginia. His parents both were born in New York. Charles married Frances. They had eleven children, the only one I am aware of however, is Ella G. who was born in 1891 in West Virginia and married Charles L. Smith about 1909. Ella & Charles had: Frances Rebecca, Amos, Sally V., Luther, James, Vera Eleanor, and Willow.

Looking for connections. My G-G-grandfather was Edward Jeffrey. He was said to have been born in Red Ruth, Cornwall, Eng in 1827. He was married to Henrietta Richards and settled in Galena,IL and mined in British Hollow WI. His son Edward, G-grandfather, married Margaret Trenary (Grant Co, WI) and lived in Galena. My grandfather, Walter, lived in Galena also. Gr- uncle mentioned family belonged to Clan Macdonald and settled in England. My mother always mentioned Ireland but a cousin mentioned Iverness Scotland.
In reading the message board, I have seen the "Jeffrey Nose" mentioned. My Grandfather Walter and my mother definately had what we always referred to as the "Jeffrey Nose". I can't find any info on family prior to Gr-Gr- grandfather Edward Jeffrey settling in Galena. Please contact me if anyone has information. Thank-you.
