Do any of these Jeffries look familiar. They lived in Mercer, Shelby, Darke, and Miami counties Ohio.

My gg grandmother, SARAH JANE, family was:

Father: James M. Jeffries b. 1820
His wife: Mary b. 1817

Children:
JESSE JEFFERIES, b. 1834.
JOHN JEFFERIES, b. 1836, Pennsylvania
LUANDA A JEFFERIES, b. 1839.
MARY E JEFFERIES, b. 1841.
LOUIS J JEFFERIES, b. 1847.
SARAH JANE JEFFERIES, b. 1849 Piqua, Miami, Ohio
RICHARD JEFFERIES, b. 1852.
GEORGE JEFFERIES, b. 1857

There is a Darke county connection because Sarah Jane's, 1st husband, Jonathan Sutton was born in Darke County, Ohio.

Sarah Jane was buried in Macedon, Ohio a couple of mile north of Fort Recovery.
Hello Dick,
Give me a couple of days and I will pull out my paper work and see if I have any thing that might connect in any way. I know I have Robert's parents name but not off the top of my head at this moment.I believe that is as far back as I go on them, is the parents name. So hopefully, there may be a connection. Take care. God bless.

PANSY

Ohio is a bit off from the subject, London. But I can't resist ...

First off, I am very relaxed about the spelling of the name, Jeffreys. There are six other mailing list with variant spellings and I accept that any of them may be a member of my family ... who spells their name Jefferis.

My ancestor, Darlington Long Jefferis, settled in Darke County, Ohio, in about 1820. He moved there from Clinton County (I think) Ohio, leaving his father, Job J. Jefferis and his father's 3rd wife, Elizabeth Nichalson, along with a handful of children.

Darlington's family stayed in Darke County for generations and I have pretty good records on them.

But I don't have good info about the descendants of Darlington's half-siblings by Job J's 2nd and 3rd wives. I'd be interested in further discussion if it appears that your group might be connected to Job J's families.

DICK in Dallas

Have recently found an apprenticeship record for Richard Jeffreys from 1747 (father of Richard Jeffreys who married Diana and moved to Liverpool in 1807). This record states that Richard was apprenticed to Abraham Nicholls and that 'William Jeffreys, gentleman, of Whitchurch Shropshire' was the father.

Hi there, I believe I'm descended from Richard Jeffreys(jnr)- he moved to Liverpool as a carver, guilder and framemaker (I'm told by a relative he went to Liverpool to join his brother who was in the medical profession. I have since found a Thomas Jeffreys of Bold Street who was a doctor -this could be the same Thomas in your information as Richard set his business in Bold Street). They then moved to Gloucestershire, Swansea and Carmarthen (becoming taxidermists), with us ending up in Pembrokeshire as jewellers. Please get back in touch,
Thanks,
James

I'm afraid that this story is completely false - a disparity in spelling in not uncommon - but all spellings of the name by the family (certainly once ennobled) are JEFFREYS. I would be interested in any documentary evidence as none of the biographies or hagiographys that I have of Jeffreys from 1683 to 2007 have any reference to such a story.

PS she was the widow of Sir John Jones when she married Jeffreys

The name changing story is a complete fabrication (mostly by people whoose name does not conform to Jeffreys' settled spelling) -why would anyone marry the Lord Chancellor and want to change the name - it is applying post 1688 revisionism on the then contemporary times.
As to direct decendants with the name Jeffreys - there are none - his son, the second Baron of Wem, died (as did the title) without male heir - therefore direct decendants can only come from the female side.
PS there are loads of books and other material on the Judge.
N.B. my line comes from his brother.

Delighted to get your reply. If you remember I sent you the Personal Ancestral File of the Jeffreys, as I know them, last year. You did mention then that you had some more information on Richard's ancestors. Any news on this please? Hope you are keeping well. I notice that your own information has disappeared from 'Family Trees'. Look forward to a reply.

Simon Gray Jeffreys- b.abt 1775 Franklin Co.,NC/d.after 1850 Wake Co.NC

Does anyone have any idea of when exactly SIMON GRAY JEFFREYS died? He was the son of WILLIAM JEFFREYS & MARY GRAY of Franklin Co.,North Carolina, and appeared in the census records from 1800 -1850 living alternately between Franklin & Wake Counties in NC. There doesn't seem to be any will, but I am wondering if anyone might have some kind of estate records or family papers that mentioned what happened to his slaves? I have reasson to believe that he may have died somewhere around 1858 in Wake County, and would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Thanks,

Deloris
Re: Simon Gray Jeffreys- b.abt 1775 Franklin Co.,NC/d.after 1850 Wake Co.NC

Was yours a slave family? It does seem that there may be a connection between yours & the Simon Gray Jeffreys in question, since he was apparently given his mother's maiden name of GRAY as his middle name, and I don't believe there were any others in his age range at that time in North Carolina. I know Simon's lineage and some of the names associated with it, but he seems to have been one of the few who didn't leave a will. If your ancestor came from Franklin or Wake, there's a good chance he may have been a slave of Simon G. Jeffreys; however, there was also another GRAY JEFFREYS, b. abt 1832, who lived in Granville Co.,NC, son of DAVID JEFFREYS, the only other one by that name that I know of who may have owned slaves. You might want to check him out, if you're not sure. As for Simon G. JEFFREYS, I am not at all sure who his children may have been, he was living alone by 1850, with 8 slaves, one of which was my 2nd gr-grandmother, whom he married off in 1858.
If this will help you any, here is a transcription of his father's will which I found online:

Will Book B, p. 69, Franklin Co, North Carolina.
Will of Capt. William JEFFREYS. To wife Mary JEFFREYS during her life or widowhood the 6 negroes Old Jeffry, Roger, Anacha, Moll, Ishmael, Tiny; 1 feather bed and furniture; "the main plantation whereon I now live to include 300 acres of land"; after her death, these to go to youngest son William JEFFREYS. To son Simon Gray JEFFREYS 1000 acres in Franklin County on north side of Little River, "joining the land of Osborn JEFFREYS and the land devised by my father Osborn JEFFREYS deceased to Nathaniel HUNT"; also 200 acres in Wake County on north side of Neuse River, land which had been purchsed from Joseph SALISBURY; and the 17 negroes Randal, Big Nannah, Mingow, Anderson, Dick, Davy, Emperor, Peter, Alfred, Burwell, Old Nanny, Ned, Old MIngow, Becky, Sindilla, Lewis, Banar. To son Robert N. JEFFREYS 1000 acres in Wake and Franklin counties on south side of Little River including millstone tract of land in Wake County, lands formerly belonging to Col. William ALSTON dec'd. and Osborn JEFFREYS, and all the land on the south side of Neuse River on Mannings Creek excepting what is left to son Simon JEFFREYS, which land adjoins lands of my father Osborn JEFFREYS deceased lying and being in Onslow County" on Queen's Creek; the 21 negroes Isaac, Tillar, Jo, Alen, Demsey, Cougar, Dempsy, Lydia, Reuben, Andrew, Osborn, Myma, Paul, Olive, Essex, Sarah, Ferry, Offy, Isham, Polley, Milley, Sim[I count 22]. To daughter Mary ALSTON and her husband Nathaniel ALSTON 3 negroes Young Aaron, Jimmy, Betsey; 1 mare or gelding, 5 cattle. To daughter Leah JEFFREYS 6 negroes Violett, Solomon, Nathan, Clary, Harry, Kuon[?]. To son William JEFFREYS 500 acres in Franklin County to include the mill seat on Little River; the land in Wake and Franklin counties not already devised to sons Simon G. and Robert N. JEFFREYS; 11 negroes Zebb, Nelson, Aggy, Rhody, Fill, Old Aaron, Banter[?], Judy, Wfight, Hicksey, Charity. All other property not willed away to be sold by executors and after debts of estate paid proceeds to be divided equally among wife Mary JEFFREYS, son Simon Gray JEFFREYS, son Robert N. JEFFREYS, daughter Leah JEFFREYS, and youngest son William JEFFREYS. Executors: Sons Simon G. JEFFREYS and Robert N. JEFFREYS, Edwin HOLDING, wife Mary JEFFREYS. March 25, 1802. Signed . Witnessed: Wm. RICHARDS, Willis RICHARDS, John WINTERS, William WILLIAMS. Undated.

Deloris

It is just something to keep an eye on, I'd think. It could turn out that was JACK/SHACK as a young child in the 1880 census.
Also, I don't know if you know it or not, but there is a death record showing SHACK JEFFRYS, died Dec. 7, 1930 Wake Co.NC. You should be able to order a copy of that from the North Carolina State Archives, or if you live nearby, there may be a copy available at the County Courthouse, you would want to check there first though.

Deloris

I have only just seen your item about Jeffreys and the link to Judge Jeffreys.

I am the last Jeffreys from my line, as my father (Arthur Stuart Jeffreys)only had daughters and I am now married. My family came from Stoke on Trent ,but also had relations in the Ellesmere/Oswestry and Wrexham areas. My great grandfather was William Jeffreys, who started a coach and horses firm in 1864, which eventually became a coach firm run by my father until he retired in about 1985. There seems to have been a line of sons called William with George and Arthur as other family given names .My grandfather (Arthur James Jeffreys) always maintained we were related to the hanging judge and i am curious to know how your researches fared! Please update me if you can!

I am not sure if he was or not, that is the problem. No one knows his background. I am going to try to get his death certificate. I can't remember if I told you his name but I have seen him on the census as Shack and as Jack (because of the names in the household I knew it was him). My uncle tells me he was lightskinned with freckles. The majority of our family is dark brown. My aunt seems to think that he was part Cherokee but I am not sure if that is true just yet. The census says he was a farmer. I think he was born in 1872-1880. That is truly all I know. He married a Hattie Hodge.

I don't recognize any of those names. I only know when Shack/Jack was the head of the household. That is why I am hoping I can get his death certificate with the hopes that his parents' names will be on there. I don't have my stuff with me but I think in the 1920 census it says (the order of the children I don't remember)
Jack Jeffrey
Hattie
Robert
Lonnie (Annie)
May (Mary)
Gray
Lucy (my grandmother)
Viola
Rachel
(I forget the rest of them)

On like the 1930 census it lists him as Shack Jeffreys
with Hattie, Robert, Minnie (I can't remember which kids are listed). On my grandmother's funeral program it refers to him as Shadrick Jeffreys. It is so frustrating smile.

Charles JEFFRIES b. 20/7/1906 in Port Elizabeth
2. John JEFFRIES b. 16/12/1865 in Evesham m: 25/10/1893 in Evesham
3. John JEFFERIES b. 1826 in Salop, m. 21/8/1853 in Dodderhill, Evesham to Emma Callow b. 1830 in Powick, Worcs.
4. John JEFFREYS b. 1781 in Llanymynach, Salop. m. 1818 in Adderley, Salop to Elizabeth HILL b. 1800.
John J (b.1826) is reported to have been the tallest man in Evesham but more importantly worked at or was the innkeeper at a post house in Droitwich.
This last seems to connect with your family and the coach and horses firm as well as Llanymynach which is Oswestry part of Salop. Any ideas?
My current objective is to fill in the gaps between 1800 to 1850 and then to try to get earlier than 1780.
I hope to hear from you again
Regards
Roger

Three Miners Dead, William Jeffreys, Walter Mathews another unknown at Wilburton, Oklahoma

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 1 December 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

THREE MINERS ARE DEAD

Accidents in the Mines at Wilburton Causes Three Deaths

Wilburton: A few evenings ago this place was aroused by a heavy explosion at the Busby Coal Mines. A sheet of flames was seen to shoot out over the mouth of the slopes to a height of over a hundred feet. William Jeffreys and Walter Mathews, who were firing blasting shorts, were in the mines at the time, and both were found to be dead by rescuing parties. One was burned to a crisp and the other smothered. Two lumps of coal, either one weighing over one hundred pounds, were blown from the mouth of the steps a distance of 300 feet. Later in the night an alarm of fire was sent in from the Ola mine, which proved to be on fire. One man is thought to have perished in this mine. The loss will be several thousands of dollars.
