John Elmore Jeffries

My maternal gr-grandfather, John Elmore Jeffries, came to North Platte, Ne, around 1900 from St. Joseph, MO. and worked for a number of years as a blacksmith there. I know little else about his parentage. He married Kitty Rupe and raised their 4 children there. My mother's memory is getting dim and I have been unable to unearth any other records...including inumerable reels of microfilm from the local newspaper.

Re: Jeffries Family

My g-grandfather was born in So. Platte, NE according to to his death certificate. He was born October 2, 1859. His two siblings, Daniel and Mary, were born in Indiana. South Platte, NE existed briefly in history. I suspect that it was either a Pony Express station or a wagon train stopover. My g-g-grandfather, James S. Jeffries, ran a wagon train, valued at $20,000, from this area. It was stolen from him. After the train was stolen, James headed off, leaving my g-g-grandmother, Lucinda Wright Jeffries, and kids abandoned. I have no record of them from this point until I pick them up in Colorado in the mid 1890's. My father referred to this many times. I have found S. Platte listed in early records. According to the 1900 census records of Pine Grove, CO, Lucinda had four children, but only my g-grandfather was surviving. That means another child younger than Silas. Who? When? Where? Nebraska? Colorado? I have no idea. If you can help, I would appreciate it. I'd like to find their whereabouts for those 30 yrs. I am having trouble going further back to the midwest without further info. Many Jeffries in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee.

Could you possibly be talking about North Platte?
I live in North Platte, Nebraska. I have never heard of South Platte. North Platte is in between the North Platte and South Platte rivers. I haven't heard of Silas Jeffries, but could do some checking for you if you want to e-mail the info. to me.

I am trying to figure out how Pamela B.H. JEFFRIES b. 10 Jun 1811 (loc unknown, maybe Mecklenburg Co VA?)fits in with the family of Charles L. JEFFRIES b. 4 Mar 1793 Mecklenburg Co VA. Charles is a son of Swepson JEFFRIES and 2nd wife Isabella LEWIS. I have a family bible that has her birth date and date of the birth of her son recorded in it.

Pamela B.H. JEFFRIES m. Thomas E. WHITE on 18 Apr 1830 in Sumner Co TN. They had a son Charles E.J. WHITE b. 20 Apr 1831 AL. In 1860 Charles E.J. WHITE lives in boarding house owned by Charles L. JEFFRIES in Little Rock, Pulaski Co AR - also living there is Caroline HOLLINSHEAD.

There is a connection between the JEFFRIES, LEWIS, HOLLINSHEAD and WHITE families but I cannot find a link that joins the older to the next generation.

I am just beginning my research on my family Jeffries. Adolphus was a my grandfather who had a brother William and according to my father died in prison.
Adolphus had 7 children who lived in VA.
Percy, Melvin, Elizabeth,John, Dennis, Wayne, and Addison.
Adolphus married Luella Brandon (1909-1980)
The only known surviving children are Wayne 8/4/1943
and Dennis who is 68 yrs old. I think Percy may be alive but not sure moved to California right after graduation around 1943 or so.
I had ancestors who settled in Weiser, Idaho in the late 1800's. I also had a grandfather with the middlename "Anderson". I have a lot of information about the Jeffries family. (But not as much on the Andersons) They went by "Jeffries" in the early days, but most turned the name into "Jeffreys". The family went to Oregon via Missouri. Before that they went to Missouri from Kentucky. Some were in Washington state for a time.
Give me a few more names and dates..especially from the 1800's and I'll see if anything matches up. If so I'll be glad to fill your email box full of information.
Janice

Jim Jeffries the fighter was born in Ohio, as were his brothers and sisters. No one in his family was born in England or went to South Africa. His family moved to CA. when he was young and his siblings lived in CA. Lots of people have been told they are related to Jim Jeffries. There are many, many lines of Jeffries out there. If you would like more information on Jim's family lines, cousins etc. , I will be glad to give you the information.

Marian,

After four years you've probably already found what you're looking for. I just thought I'd post this in case you or anyone else is still interested.

There was a Robert Jeffries in King and Queen County, Virginia, born about 1829 (age 21 in 1850 census.) He was the son of Lewis Jeffries and Martha A. Brumley. This Robert moved to Tennessee around 1852 or shortly thereafter. He did not have a brother named George; however, he did have a first cousin named George W. Jeffries, probably born around 1820.

I have no idea if this is "your" Robert or not. I just thought there were enough similarities that it might be something you'd want to look into.

Good luck,
Vicki
