Descendants of Walter JEFFS & Annie GLOVER

I am seeking the descendants of Walter JEFFS born 30 Aug 1899 in St. Helen's, Lancs who married Annie GLOVER in 1920. Walter JEFFS and his family settled in the Worthing area of West Sussex around 1933 and they lived at 100 Sompting Road. Walter, Annie and their son Ronald emigrated aboard the “Largs Bay” for a voyage from Southampton to Sydney, Australia on 13 Nov 1947.

Walter & Annie JEFFS had three sons:

Norman  - born 30 Oct 1918 who was killed in action in WW2 aboard HMS Hood on 24 May 1941;

Walter (Junior) - born 1921 who emigrated to Queensland, Australia aboard the ‘Oronsay’ from London on 22 Apr 1939 when he was aged 17. At that time, he was living at 20 Browning Road, Worthing. He subsequently lived at Dalrymple Heights, Mackay, Queensland. I believe that he married Ilma Anzac TRONSON between 1943 and 1949 and that the couple had a daur, Diane Norma JEFFS.

Ronald - born 18 Dec 1925 in St. Helen's also served in the Royal Navy in WW2, but aboard HMS Resource (Stoker 1st Class P/KX602613). After emigrating to Australia in 1947, he married Moira MUNRO on 4 Aug 1951 in Albert Street Methodist Church, Brisbane.

Walter JEFFS (Snr) and his wife Annie GLOVER died in 1981 and 1974 respectively in Bundaberg, Queensland.

If anyone has a link to any of the above, will they please contact me by E-mail to woolgar@one-name.org ?

Marion Woolgar

Hi the only information i have on her mother is she was brought up by Mary Ann Shears the wife of John Piper there doesnt seem to be any details only that she was born before he was married and to an island woman the rumor has it but other than that not too sure. He had a lot of children to lots of mothers and that is when it gets tricky. There was a book i borrowed from the library and that had the childrens names and womens but that was not really much help and there is not a lot of records from Norfolk Island especially if you were an officer and did not want things known around the place. Not sure if this helps any more questions let me know. Carol

Hello - I don't know anything about Sarah I'm afraid. I am a direct descendent of Jonas and his first wife in England. I'm looking for info on Jonas's Australian family. What do you have already on Jonas's background? I may be able to help in return for info on Sarah's family.
Regards
Linda

I am a direct descendent of a Jonas Jeffs and Elizabeth Lambley [I think!] who married in Weston-sub-Edge, Gloucestershire, England in 1819. He, like your Jonas Jeffs, was sentenced to transportation for life after being found guilty of horse stealing. However, my Jonas married a Fanny Thrupp in Tasmania. Does this ring any bells with you? Jonas Jeffs is an unusual name!

Then the 1915 marriage will be the correct one, and the marriage certificate would be your starting point to trace the generations back.

What else do you know about your father - his parents names ?

There is a William A S Jeffs born Worcester in 1920 to parents William and Clara (Passey) who married in Worcester in 1915. If that is the right marriage, getting a copy of the marriage certificate will give their ages and father's names and should then allow you to track them back.

My wife's maternal ancestry is Jeffs - I have traced that line back through N Wales, Yorkshire,London, Hertfordshire and back to the Bicester area in the 17th C - so they moved about a bit.

Antony
Chalfont Research

Their children were George, Ernest,Walter, and Caroline or Carrie Jeffs. I am particularly looking for who George's parents were - I have his mother as Mary born 1843in Ashton Tarven, Cheshire, England. No record of the father though.
I was just rummaging through an antique shop in San Francisco and just happened to see it. It appears to be a sampler as I described but it has been a few years since I have been in that store.Being a genealogy buff I thought that this might prove to be an interesting family relic to someone. The name of the store, I believe, is Antiquarios and the phone number is(415) 621-6453. Good luck. Cary

Hello,
I spotted your post on here regarding the item you picked up at an antique store - I am very interested as several generations of my Jeffs family all came from Byfield, although I have not yet found a Kezia Jeffs during my research. I am interested to know what the item is exactly, and how you managed to find out where Kezia Jeffs was born. My great great great grandfather is John Jeffs, born about 1796 in Byfield, but I do not have any info as yet on his spouse or siblings. I know your post is nearly 5 years old so I hope you are still contactable! Many thanks. Andy

Hello Francisca,

If I am not mistaken your William Jeffs was the son of Richard Jeffs and Martha Walker. Richard and his family left Liverpool, England on April 22, 1862. They were passengers on a ship called "John J Boyd" and they arrived in New York City on June 4, 1862.

The first living child found born to Richard and Martha was William Walker Jeffs. Christened in Banbury, Oxfordshire England on Sept 2, 1824 and died Sept 17, 1862 md Emma Summers in 1851 Eydon, Northhamptonshire England.

William and Emma had the following children:

William b. 1852 d. 1853
James Arthur b. 5/17/1855 in Liverpool d. 2/6/1919 in USA md Lucinda Seely
Ephriam b. 1857 in Liverpool d. 9/25/1910 in USA
md Martha Jane Sabriskie
Emma Elizabeth b. 4/12/1859 in England d. 5/11/1938
Lorenzo b. 9/14/1862 crossing the plains near Fort Larimie, Wyoming d. 1921

If you go to the familysearch.org website which is the Morman genealogy website you can find everything there that is in my book.

I also have a picture of William and Emma I will forward it to asap.

Hope this helps you on your hunt.

Kimberly Rutledge

Thanks for the info Kimberley but my problem is that I do not know who the JEFFS is that I am looking for. And it is only a guess that a Jeffs is the father of my Elizabeth Agatha because of her surname being listed as Jeffs-Holtom on her birth certificate. No dad has been named. Her mum is definitely Temperance Ann Holtom who appears not to have married....although she had two, and perhaps three, children.

Cheers...

Hi Kimberley

In your 'Jeffs' book, have you come across an English Jeffs from Warwickshire circa 1875 who had a daugther illegitimately. The mother of the child is Temperance Ann Holtom and the name of the child is Elizabeth Agatha Jeffs-Holtom, b.1876 at Leamington Priors..

This is a long-shot but I have been trying to find the father of Elizabeth for my family research. Elizabeth is my grandfathers mother.

Any info could be helpful...

Thank you..

Hi, I am trying to connect with someone in regards to the Jeffs family, I am Grandaughter to the Pennington Family in Hutchinson, KS. I am reconizing the names you are listing. We have tons of Jeffs family pictures that were left to the Pennington Family due to no one else would claim the information. The one son, from my understanding had been "disowned", and the family left him nothing. I will wait for your reply and then dig out the box(yes there is a lot) of pictures which have names and dates written on a lot of them dating back to the late 1800's if I am remembering correctly. Let me know if you know of any Jeffs Family ties in the Hutchinson, KS area.

I have a Thomas Jeffs (maybe Juffes) in my tree born, I think, in 1791 and married to an Elizabeth Fielding (maybe Field). They had a daughter Caroline (probably also others, but I have traced back from Caroline's death certificate). Caroline married Thomas Padley and emigrated in 1852 to Australia. One of her children who died before they left was Thomas Juffes Padley. Do you have anything on this Thomas?

I had look on England Census on Ancestry.com for Thomas Jeffs and family.

Have located Thomas and members of his family from 1871 Census to 1901 Census. (He is listed as a Stonemason in all of them)
Look for a birth date of approx 1846 and a death date after 1901 for Thomas Jeffs. (census's gives a couple of locations in England where he was born)

No idea who his parents are.

His wife Esther Elizabeth Pierson may have died between 1889 and 1901 as Thomas is listed as a Widower in 1901 Census and their last known child Edward A. Jeffs was born abt. 1899.

PS I am slowly working on a name study of Jeffs around the world and would be interested in any new information you locate.

Hello
I have checked my book named "The Jeffs Families" written by L.D. Jeffs and published in 1973, and there is no mention of Thomas Jeffs born before 1958 or his wife Elizabeth Pierson. My books starts with

You might try looking for Thomas with a different spelling.

Dictionaries of surnames indicate probable spelling variations. The most predominent variations of Jeffs are Jeffes, Jeff, Jeffe.

Since many of the variations of the Jeffs surname is known to researchers more variations include but is not limited to the following: Jheffs, Jeffes, Jefes, Jeves, Geves, Geffes, Jelphs, Jevs.

Just a thought it is very common to have names change due to typos in census transcriptions or similar very honest events.

Board Administrator,
Kimberly Rutledge

Kim, my name is Judy Geffs Turner, my granddad was Robert Chase Geffs/Jeffs. I have a record that his father was Anna (sounds like a mothers name). Do you have any records of this info...? Would love to hear from you.

Judy

you seem to be a walth of knowledge, I hope you can help me find where we fit into the Geffs family. My grandfather was Robert Chase Geffs, on the 1910 US Federal Census it says he was born in New York about 1890. It says his father was Anna Geffs (sounds like a mothers name) but that is what the record shows. do you know anything about this side. Judy Geffs Turner

Hello there
I just noted your family connection to Eydon and wondered whether I could be of any help? I am secretary of the Eydon Historical Research Group so we have access to a lot of information, plus I live in the village so I can always get you a few local snaps. We have just set up a new website at www.eydonhistoricalresearchgroup.org which may be of interest to you. If you have any documents or photos relating to Eydon they may be of great help to us, so I would really appreciate a copy. I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards, Alison

Yes Rob, I too hope it helps someone. Are you a Jeffs descendant? If so I amy be able to help you out. I am in possession of a book with over 1000 pages written by LD Jeffs in 1973 only 300 copies printed. I am very lucky to have it.

It is full of genealogy and from all the family trees I have seen this is by far the best done providing computers were not available to him.

If you need anything looked up, just let me know.

Kimberly Rutledge

Pleased to help Kimberley
Just a few details of the Jeffs tombs that I scribbled down whilst in the churchyard on that blustery day as it began to rain:

William d.9 Jul.1893 aged 46.
Harriet, his wife, d.29 Mar.1928, aged 81.
George, infant son of George Henry MOSELEY & Martha Jane JEFFS, d.1 Jan.1907, aged 5 days.
George H.M. JEFFS d.29 Mar.1943 aged 68.
Martha Jane, his wife d.24 Mar.1956, aged 82.
Martha Helen JEFFS d.31 May 1991, aged 77.

Mary wife of William JEFFS, d.1 Apr.1881, aged 26.
Blanche Alice, daughter of above William and Mary JEFFS, d.10 Apr.1878, aged 2.
Above named William JEFFS d.17 Feb.1899, aged 4.
Herbert husband of Martha WRIGHT d.8 Jul.1943, aged 68.
Martha WRIGHT wife of above d.8 Dec.1962, aged 81.
Also Thomas Henry WRIGHT d.26 Mar.1982.

There were quite a few other JEFFS tombs but as it isn't my primary interest I didn't note them down.
Incidentally there is a pleasant churchwarden called Ann who was very helpful and she showed us their well kept, extensive burial records and grave location sketches.
Hope this helps someone.
Rob in Mexico

Just in case anyone is interested, I just returned from a memorable holiday in England and found my g.g.grandfather's headstone in St. Peter's churchyard (James Young), Delamere, Cheshire and I noticed there were lots of legible headstones to JEFFS people in that churchyard. Loads of them.
best regards and good hunting
Rob in Mexico
