Hello!

I am researching Piltaver surname. The Piltaver surname originate from Krška vas (in old church books called Munkendorf). Krška vas is in SE Slovenia near Brežice. If you want more information about Piltaver family just write me on my email: freshprincefrom@yahoo.com

David from Slovenia

Hello Sharon,

There is a record of Caroline JERIN in the Social Security Death Index. Perhaps what you need to do is spell the name various ways to find records for these two. When I checked Ellis Is. I did find some variations. Interesting that most of the folks below were going to Chicago or LaSalle, to sisters, uncles and other relatives. So you may want to check the original manifest which will give you some detail. Of course "Caroline" would not have been dodging the draft, but perhaps "John" would have been. But then sometimes this type of thing is nothing but a family story!

Another thing to keep in mind is that in Slovenian language you most likely not find Caroline, but perhaps Draga or Dragica (sounds like drrrageetsa). And John may be Johann or Ivan, Ivo, Ivica.

One thing that did happen was for one relative to use anothers passport. In those days of course there was no photo just physical description. And also another thing to consider is that around 1913 or 1014 immigration stopped from what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Oh, I did not mention, but perhaps you know, that JERIN and PILTAVER are Slovenian names. Prior to 1918 Slovenia (sometimes called Krain, Carinola in those days) was a part of Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Name of Passenger Residence Arrived Age on Arrival
1.
Caroline Jerin

Looking for information on ellis island immigration for Caroline Jerin.
Her maiden name is Caroline Piltaver. She came into US with brother John Piltver (no record of entry) Caroline married Louis Jerin around 1916. I am trying to find out what name she used when she entered ellis island. The piltavers were leaving Austria and "dodging the army" that is why they didn't use their real name. Louis and Caroline Jerin lived in LaSalle Ill. and Chicago Ill. please let me know if anyone knows anything! Thanks, Sharon
