William Hamilton Jerkins
15 November 1851 - 27 January 1917
William Hamilton Jerkins was born in Henry County Alabama to Richard S. and Harriett Davis Jerkins. He married Mary Catherine McLellan (also McClellan) on December 9th, 1875 at the home of her parents. Daniel (Mac) McLellan and Margaret Singletary McLellan. William H and his brother John H signed the $200.00 bond signifying that there was no legal cause to keep the marriage from taking place. The ceremony was performed by W.A.Cumbie, Minister of the Gospel.
William H. and Mary homesteaded a farm in Dale County, Alabama and had ten children. Two children, Jesse (1888)and Daisie(1894) died as infants. The remaining children were Daniel (1876), Ida Belle(1878), Richard S. (1880), William Hickman (1882), Edward Jefferson(1883), Hattie (1886), Katie (1890) and my Grandfather, Alto Lee Jerkins, born April 28th, 1895
The family continued farming and as the boys came of age and married they continued farming on land adjacent to the family farm.
On December 16th, 1913, Mary Catherine passed away. Just over a month later, on January 27th, 1914, William H. died. The couple were buried in Pinkard Memorial Cemetery in Dale County, Alabama.
They share a Masonic tomb monument with the inscription:
"Dear friends, as you pass by remember me.
As you are now, so once was I.
As I am now so shall you be.
Prepare for death, and follow me.
