Beth, I am Jacqueline J. Reynolds. My father was Anglus R. Rogers. His sister was Norma. My Grandmother was Christine Viola Lee Green. My Grandfather was Middleton D. Rogers. We are from Tampa, Fl. I vaguly remember when my Grandfather died we went to somewhere like Eustis I was very young. He and my Grandmother were not together. She was a Green. I accidently found out my Dad had a half sister.I found out at a church youth group, Ballast Point Baptist Church.I want to say the person leading us was a Fox and perhaps his Mom was Emma.I don't know what happened but my Dad did not have a relationship with him or his family. I would love to fill in the blanks.
Please let me hear from you.
Robert Wilson Jerkins most assredly WAS in a reserve unit. He served in Captain William Thornton's Company K, Alabama Reserves.

He was discharged on 19 January 1865, for disability. The discharge papers say that he was 5'8" tall, had a fair complexion, black hair and gray eyes.

They also say that he was born in Hancock County, Georgia and that he was 47 years old when he was discharged, giving him a birth year of 1818. This fits perfectly with his stated age on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 U.S. Census reports.

I think that Captain William Thornton was probably the husband of Robert Wilson Jerkins' sister, Henrietta Jerkins Giger Thornton.

Hello,
My name is Lori Hollowell, I am the g'granddaughter of Ida Belle Jerkins. She died after giving birth to her 7th child on a farm in Bonifay, FL. My grandmother Effie Rae Paulk was 6 or 7yrs old. The old farm is still in the Paulk family, Ida Belle's grandson runs it now.
I have visited the New Teaman Cemetery with my mother, where Ida Belle is buried by her parents. I have one picture of her. I do not know much about the Jerkins Family. I have all the family information from the family Bible. I hope to attend the Jerkins reunion in AL next year with my mother.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Lori

Sounds like a fun trip. I love going back to the old home places.

If R.S. owned the place, the County tax books will be able to give you the exact address. If he was renting, it will be a little harder, but still doable. Check out his neighbors in 1910 and then look for them in the tax books. When you find them, get their address and you can probably find R. S.'s place from there. If the streets or addresses have changed, record the township and range - check that agains a plat map (County property tax office will probably have one) and you will have it narrowed down to within 640 acres of the place .

If all else fails, what you want is a place that was called Turner's Mill in 1900 and Tate's School House in 1910. Tate's school still exists, so you can at least get into the neighborhood.

Catherine very probably moved along with R. S. and her brother Thomas - they were all living together in Turner's Mill, Geneva County, by 1900 and were still together in 1910. In 1910, John H. and his wife still lived more or less close by R. S.

R. S.'s sons John H. Jerkins and Reason J. Jerkins were also living in Turner's Mill in 1900. And his son Hickman Jerkins' widow and surviving son, James Lafayette Jerkins, was also living in Geneva County.

I suspect that R. S., who was nearing 80 by 1900, moved to Geneva County to be closer to his sons and their families. Hickman had applied for and received initial approval of a homestead land grant there before he died - his widow Sarah proved and received the claim before she remarried to Morgan Pippin. John H.'s wife had family (Moring) there. And by 1900, there was no member of Richard S.'s family left in Henry County.

RS Jerkins to Geneva

In doing a bit of research to find the last residence of some of our Jerkins clan, I was curious as to why Catherine Jerkins, the daughter of Richard S. moved to Geneva county. According to the 1910 census they lived near the Vickers family whom I plotted from the land patent to be near New Teamon cemetery where Richard S. is buried. There are other Jerkins' in Geneva but they are some distance away. Any ideas?

I found Richard just as you said at Turner's Mill in 1900 along with his son and daughter in the 1900 Federal Census. I had assumed she had moved earlier and then he moved after Harriett's death. My father's family retained the land in Dale/Houston counties through his Uncle Edd Jerkins, son of WH Jerkins. I am trying to pinpoint as accurately as possible, the last residence of many of our ancestors and try to determine why some of them went where they did. Using land deeds and proximity to burial sites as well as neighbors listed in Census', I'm trying to get a sense for the final move of many of them. My trip to the Dothan area last May was astounding. I am traveling back with my father Bill Jerkins next month to have him show me some family places that he remembers. Should be a good trip.

I have seen his gravesite there, gps'd it, and took many photographs. As always, I am extremely interested in any old photographs from his line. Thanks.

To add some information of interest to your list of Jerkins in the Civil War, Godfrey G. Jerkins was an older Brother to Leophilis F.W. Jerkins. They were living at Seale, Ala. when war started. Godfrey owned farm and his parents were also living with him. His wife (Godfrey) was Smithey. In formation I have on Leophilis is that his middle name was Fleetwood and I do not know if he had a name beginning with W. He is my great-great grandfather and father of Robert Jerkins. My grand father is Zimmerman Heywood Jerkins, born in Wilkinson Co. Ga. I am William Heywood Jerkins and my E-mail address is w.jerkins @mchsi.com.

They are parents of Leofleus Fleetwood Jerkins who served in Civil War, was wounded in leg at Petersburg, Va. He is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Ga. I have a great deal of information on him. I also have a copy of his Marriage License that I made on a trip to Wilkinson Co. several years ago, lhowever I do not have any information on her father or the Stuckey family.

Hi Philip,
I'm Erin Scott. You're my Great Uncle! Weird! Please don't take this the wrong way, but my Grandfather, Leo Scott, which would actually be your brother! Always talked of your/his father as being a severe alcoholic and he always claimed to be an only child. I don't understand. Did you know you had a full-blooded brother? There are many family secrets on my Scott's side of the family, so I guess it should'nt really surprise me. I'm assuming you are older than my Grandfather, as you took your mother's(my great grandma) maiden name, but who raised you?
Please write back.
Thanks
Re: Middleton Rogers,Jr.

Hello Pat,
Middleton D. Rogers Jr. was born 1868. He married Emma Jane Tyner on 5-21-1891 in Lake Co. Fl. She was born 1873 and died 1-6-1893. Their only child, Emma aka Baby Em, was born on 12-31-1892. Emma Jane died within a few days. Baby Em was raised by the Tyner aunts. M.D. remarried on 12-31-1894 in Lake Co. Fl to Chrissey Viola Lee. I believe her sister,Lily Mae married M.D.'s brother John Patrick. Chrissey and M.D. had 2 children Nora and Angus.
This info was confirmed by Roger's oldest sister, Louise( who is 90 y/o and sharp as a tack . We recently visited Louise in Tampa. I finally had the opportunity to sit quietly and get the hx from her. Roger and I went to Ponceanna cem. in Paisley and found Middleton and Clarissa's and Sara Napier's grave sites and just over a row or 2 found M.D. and Emma Jane's. Don't know where Chrissey is buried. Louise gave ma a pic of M.D., Clarissa, Roger's mother and father , Louise and his next oldest sister Mary. Also a post card M.D. had sent Louise when she was a girl.
I don't know what kind of education he had or type work he did. Nor can I find Nora and Angus.
Let me know what you have. When i have time will try to find the other bits and pieces and post pic.
Thanks, Beth
This has to be Middleton Jr. or else why is he in a pic with Clarissa Harley Jane and Baby Em???

Pat,
I have read about your father. Also ,read that he, Middleton Sr. was such a great step father that his step dau named her child after him. I wish we had more info on Middleton Jr. Perhaps, Louise will remember more.Think he was a minister with the Baptist church. Can well imagine that the Tyners dominated Baby Em and that my husband only met him on a couple of occasions. Baby Em, Roger's mother was very bright and accomplished...even had a scholarship to a college in music. However, according to Roger ,aka, DR. Fox, psychologist, he says his mother was a handful, neurotic from the word go. But , this is common for so many bright creative people!!! I fel that M.D. may have been a great person... He made friends with Louise, Baby Em's step daughter. Baby Em married Roger's father who had been recently widowed with the still birth of their dau, Doris and death of his wife Mattie Macon Warlick of Burke Co. NC. Louise was between 3-5 years old when her mother died. Louise has mixed feelings re: Baby Em. Seems Baby couldn't leave her Aunt Minnie ,so the family lived in Tampa and NC. Apparently many times W.A. Fox lived in NC and Baby lived with Aunt Minnie!!!!! Well when you're spoiled by your aunts& raising a family of 6 on a contractor's salary may have be hard. Roger's father had a stroke when he was in his early 50's. . Baby became more dependant on Aunt Minnie. I think a
Aunt Minnie was the one who prevented M.D. from having much contact. Isn't it interesting that Baby's mother
Emma j
Jane and M.D. were buried together?????
Well more later.
Beth
Lori:
My G GF's brother William A. Brown married Matilda Jerkins, dau. of Robert W. Jerkins, b. 1818 GA. His father was Zachariah Jerkins and Robert was brother to your Richard Singleton Jerkins.
Per Hayes "Miscellaneous Records of Early Settlers of Dale County", he indexed surnames of early arrivals from James E. Preston on 26 July, 1949. Zachariah Jerkins arrived in 1832 from Florida and had two sons, Wilson & James. (Other son's not mentioned so these 2 are the ones who came with him and his wife.
Another source:
A Mills Family story: when Eliza Jane Forbes Mills (b. GA 1818; d FL 1854), widow of Thomas Mills (b. abt 1800; d 1845) married Zachariah Jerkins, the overseer of her father Wesley Forbes' Leon, FL, plantation. Many of the Mills came to Dale Co., AL with Zach and Eliza. I believe Eliza was his 2nd wife. I think Richard had already settled in Henry Co., AL.

Will be happy to exchange info.

I have Robert's father as Zachariah and his father as Sr.

N Brown
