Was in Llanidloes, Wales this summer, tracking my Jerman roots, and was told by someone there that there were Jermans in Oregon who came from Llandidloes. Yours? Mine left there in 1840's. Weavers, seeking better circumstances as industrial revolution sent looms out of homes and into factories. One of "ours" was Mary Ella Jerman, born in NYC 1867...any tie? My gggggrandparents were Thomas and Mary Jerman. Cemetery in Llanidloes was full of Thomas/Mary combinations...for what that is worth! If Mary Ella might be yours, I have civil war pension records of her father, and some pictures of Llanidloes I can share.

Jerman family bible

Looking for family bible of Daniel Jerman, born 1837,Llanidloes,Wales, came to NYC sometime before civil war. Great aunt (Elsie) Mildred Jerman said the bible ended up with Nelson Tompkins, son of Emma Jerman (born in 1860's or 70's) and Harrington Clarendon Tompkins. There were several Tompkins daughters living in Charolttesville area in early 70's...am hoping one of them knows whereabouts of bible, and will share info. Thanks!

Re: Jerman family bible

Thanks for your response and sorry to be slow in returning. The bible we're looking for was reportedly last in the hands of Nelson Tompkins, (son of Emily Jerman Tompkins) and, now, presumably, one of his daughters (who are such distant relatives that I'm not sure of names, and have no idea of whereabouts, or if they're even still alive.) However, I keep hoping it might surface in some unexpected place. If your father's family has had it for a long time, probably not the one we're looking for, but here is some info, just in case:

It probably included Daniel and Thomas Jerman, brothers born in 1835 and 37 who arrived in NYC from Llanidloes, Wales in 1851 with their father Daniel, possibly mother Ann and older brother Edward. The line the bible stayed with was Daniel's--Agnes, Thomas Edward, Ann, Jane, Emily, Edna, Llewellyn. The brothers married two sisters, Agnes and Margaret Scott, so the bible could begin with Scotts if it originated on the distaff side of the family. Any of this sound familiar?
Dittingen/Zwingen - USA

My great-grandfather Hieronimus Jermann (1849-1914) arrived in US approximately 1878 and settled in New York. About 8 years ago, I learned that he had six brothers that "went west." Thanks to a wonderful e-mail from Franz Jermann of Dittingen, I now know that those six brothers were named Franz, John, Paul, August, Joseph and Meinrad. According to Franz, as of 1908, Heironimus and Paul lived in New York - the rest lived in Ohio (Independence). I believe that several descendants of these brothers continued on to Oregon and possibly Washington. Several postings on this website refer to this family and I would love to hear from you. The markers on this sample match 26 of 28 markers of a sample provided to the Jarman DNA Project by a participant whose ancestors were from north Devonshire England.
I wonder if you have any information on Peter Jermain of
Bern, Switzerland, who emigrated to the US in the latter 1840's or early 1850's with his family. Peter's wife's name appears to be Magdelena Halbies (?) and they had a daughter, Mary (my GG grandmother) born in 1828. They later moved to Sheboygan, Wis.

Thanks!!

Pearl Jerman was my great-grandmother (the mother of my mom's mom). My mom's birth name is Creta Banister.
Pearl's dad was John Jerman who married Josephine Ewalt Newman (b. July, 28, 1858) on June 17m 1896 in Blaine County Oklahoma. Family tradition says John Jerman was a Choctaw Indian born in Alabama about 1851.
Re: Edward Jerman

Sorry. That's too early for my crowd. According to notes my mother took from Tredyffrin Township History by Ward, T.E., vol 6, there was Thomas Jerman who came from Wales in 1699 on William Galley from River Towy, Wales. He died in 1740. There were three people in his party, but doesn't say who. He was a noted quaker preacher and a miller. Built mill (still standing...very close to my parent's house) in 1710.
He seems to have had only daughters. First grandchild born in 1713. None of this helps with your Edward, but perhaps Thomas came with a brother, who in turn produced Edward.

Our Jermans came from Llanidloes, Wales, which is in Montgomeryshire, near Radnor, Wales. Since the mill that Thomas built in 1710 is near Radnor, PA, and one of the counties in the area is Montgomery, I've always assumed that the Jermans who came in late 1600's came from same area of Wales. Wish I knew something more helpful. Good luck!
Yes, we are relatives. My grandfather, Louis Jerman, was the brother of your grandfather, Fredrick Jerman. I think it was 1979 when Franz Jermann visited us in Chicago from Switzerland. From the Ancestry.com message board, you can see Franz responded to some of the messages from Dittingen Switzerland where he still lives. My father, Louis Jerman Jr., has gone to visit Franz on a number of occasions.
